The Confederacy of Bowlartz is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by Fran Tarkenton with an even hand, and remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed population of 861 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Public Transport. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Outposity. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 39%. A large private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Fran Tarkenton has been known to threaten dissenting citizens with a machine gun at press conferences, ethnic minorities are often refused admission to some of the nation's best schools, Max Barry is this year's Miss Bowlartz, and small businesses are gobbled up almost daily by corporate giants. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Bowlartz's national animal is the Bearded Clam, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Looney.
