Map of Elyreia and Kastarea

Map of the Principality of Elyreia

Elyreia has remained unexplored by foreign powers for three reasons that prove difficult for navigation. First, the area lies at a convergence zone of the southern hemisphere jetstream, as warmer tropical air crashes with southern arctic air. This causes a number changing weather patterns, most notably the strong storms at sea, which make the seas rough to navigate accurately, and can spread for hundreds of miles in thick cloud cover.

Second, the area of Elyreia is located along a number of subsurface volcanic mountain ranges, of which Elyreia and Volaria and surrounding islets are a result of volcanic eruptions breaking the surface of the ocean. As a result, there are a large number of rocks and reefs that lie beneath the waves, some shallow enough to cause havoc upon wayward ships that cannot locate the shoals or spot the reefs beneath the waves.

Third, Elyreia's remote location has prevented many explorers from desiring the map the immediate area, and as such the only evidence land masses may exist are apocryphal, satellite imagery, or the occasional Elyreian ship spotting.

It is stated that Elyreia has a small mountain range that runs in a slight crescent shape from south to north-east along the center of the island, with many boreal forests ranging across the lands. Rocks, reefs, and shoals are common around the islands, with the only reprieve being on the inner side of Elyreia, where a deep valley exists between Elyreia and Kastareia. Here exists deeper and calmer waters, thanks in part to the shallower exterior waters around the islands that break up harsh waves or seas.

Elyreia experiences heavy monsoon seasons in the spring and fall, with the winter-side of both often being blizzard conditions.
