The Imperial Journal - January 2019

Talking to Samasbhi, Roleplay Overseer and Provincial Governor
Peken

The Pacific News Network is no strangers to interviews. A lot of members of the Pacific has been put into the spotlight by our hardworking writers and editors. Hence, it is no surprise that in the so-called revival edition of the Imperial Journal, the PNN has decided to go back to basics and re-introduce one of the more sought after article types in its voyage as a news publication. Samasbhi, one of the Imperial Governors has graced February edition of the Imperial Journal with their presence. Our newest addition to the Pacific News Network, Peken, has caught the RMB Roleplay Overseer in a headlock and has been given the opportunity to get the inside scoop regarding the secret NS life of … Samasbhi.

Peken: Inside NS, who are you?

Sam: I'm Samasbhi, also Sam(a) for short or Ouro, referring to my signature symbol: The Ouroboros. On NS, my focus is on the culture side: primarily designing & handling Roleplay Systems (OOC). I also contribute to security & other regional stuff, as I can.

P: How did you come to find NS?

S: Good question. I was searching for simulation games on the Internet, and stumbled upon NationStates through "recommendations" and "similar titles". Since it is browser based, thought of giving it a try; and here I am!

P: Leading from that, how long have you been playing NS and how long have you been a member of the NPO?

S: I will complete two years on NS in a month (yay!). Founded in the Pacific and never moved, I am a native in its full sense. Primarily an Arembian (RMBian), I joined the NPO when RMB RP was officialised, and I became its Keeper. This was ~4 months from founding.

P: What do you do inside the NPO?

S: I run the MegaVerse, our RMB RP, having designed its system and mechanics; and backed by an awesome community. My involvement & contributions on our off-site RP is also increasing, or so I like to believe. I have also hosted multiple events on our side of interregional festivals. This apart, I govern Province Highlock.

P: What do you like about the NPO?

S: The community; and I don't say this simply because I reside here. This community is indeed unique, and it becomes apparent to anyone who spends even a day or two here. Over 15 years of community building brings some standards.

P: What are your hobbies outside of NS?

S: You mean outside RP ? Reading, History, a bit of gaming, MUSIC!

P: One last question - are there any particular genres of books or music that you enjoy?

S: All music. Literally anything irrespective of language or culture as long as the composition appeals to me. As for books, thrillers, adventure, fantasy, in fiction, and science, history, in non-fiction. There's more too, heheh.

Curias & What They Mean To You
Jokesters

In this article, we will be talking about Curias. A lot of our Pacificans do not know what a Curia is. Let's start from the beginning as stated in the charter’s (Article III) :“The Pacific itself will be divided, as directed by the Pacific Senate, into provinces. This separation will typically be along alphanumeric demarcation for the purposes of expediency”. There are 3 provinces each having its own governors: Province Ardere (Non-Letters - G) governed by Cave Dweller, Province Tannenberg (H - Q) governed by Glealian, and Province Highlock (R - Z) which is governed by Samasbhi. The letters that encompass each province's identity refers to how member nations are assigned to their respective provinces - the first letter of your nation name dictates which province you belong to. For example, if your nation name is Jokesters, you are a part of Tannenberg's Curia for your nation starts with the letter J!

Okay, so now that we have covered what a Province is, I can explain the Curia. To put it simply a Curia is the collective of nations inside a province. As stated in the charter in Article III: “…each Province will have a Curia. These assemblies are charged with electing the Patricians. They are composed of every citizen of the provinces within the Pacific. Every citizen nation is automatically a member in good standing within their designated Provincial Curia.”. Now that we cleared up what the Curia is, you may be wondering - what is the importance of the Curia?

The importance of the Curia is to not only elect the Patricians but to grow the province from inside out and to nurture it. The provinces' individual community is dependent on the curia to be active and to help others inside of it. But not everything about the Curia is fun and games; sometimes they will compete against Curias from other provinces for merit as well. Take our inter-provincial spam-a-thon for example (thread is viewable on our offsite forum with an account). Members of Curias are also able to gain positions, by proving that they are an integrated part of the province and serving the province. These positions are as follows:

Governor – the leader and director of the Province. This position is typically appointed by the Senate but can be achieved via any method deemed appropriate by the Patrician’s Assembly, with Imperial approval. The Governor is responsible for appointing the other officers of the Province.

Proconsul – The chief recruiting officer of the Province. This nation is charged with approaching nations within the province and directing them towards the offsite governmental forums.

Aedile – The chief media officer of the Province. This nation is charged with producing province-specific stories for the Pacific News Network and generating Provincial propaganda.

Patrician – Each Province will elect one to three Patricians to serve on the Patrician’s Assembly. These nations can be officers already with roles within the Province.

Now that you know about what the Curia is and how to be a part of them, let's learn a little history. The Curia existed when the provinces became part of the Pacific. The provincial structure dates back to one of the original founders of the NPO. From there, it was built upon until we reached today's structure of the provinces. Along the way, the provincial system was abolished and reinstated multiple times. But every time it was implemented, the Curia was always the core of each system, even if it wasn’t called so. So, it is about time to help your province and integrate into the Curia, Build it. GO! Here's where you can start - the Pacific Index

The Pacifican Empress & Her One-Minute Reign
Japanese schoolgirls

The importance of connecting with the New Pacific order through other forms of communication besides the usual Regional Message Boards (RMB) or even telegrams between Pacificans has never been displayed so greatly by the quirky events that come and go in a beat of a heart. These ‘anomalies’ only occur once and are witnessed only by the meekest of eyes and the most alert individuals in our offsite forums and Discord server – a true example of a virtual Haley’s Comet. One such example is the legendary tale of a Pacifican empress that not many knew ruled the Order at one point of time thought the blame could not be put on them for her reign was ridiculously short at a mere minute. This is the tale of the Pacifican Empress and her one-minute reign.

Blizzarin was a roleplayer hailing from the NS NPO community. Their incredibly written posts, well-planned story arcs and expertise in many roleplaying-related matters had elevated their tenure in the Order to something akin to a cult following with many a moniker being produced to refer to her traits and interests. “Plaguelord Blizz” and even “Pestilence” were timely nods to their wisdom towards medical matters and their roleplaying nation’s stance towards biological weaponry.

It was a usual day in the NPO Discord server as Blizz conversed with their comrades about the mundane happenings of life. A run-of-the-mill discussion about each other’s plans would have never sparked something noteworthy in the annals of NPO Discord, until a question was placed in everyone’s mind – what if we give Blizzarin a Senator masking for giggles? Of course, the idea was scrapped and brushed off as being insane and ridiculous and the conversation resumed its normal course. Like a seed in cultivated soil however, the concept of having Blizzarin stand atop the Discord list of users with an imperial red hue covering their name was deeply rooted in everyone’s mind at that point and therefore the entire channel has shifted once more to attempt to do the nigh impossible; Blizzarin as Emperor in the Discord server.

And the plan was set in motion. Someone with admin permissions was to briefly tag Blizzarin with the Emperor role while the rest of the congregation got their screenshot tool ready to capture the moment. At first, the hurdles presented to them to try and dissuade the will of the people: the obvious breach in security of some of the more private channels, the consequences that the admin will face upon performing this antic and of course the probability of no one not being able to take an image of her donning the Discord role. It was after all, a one-and-done stunt so the stakes were higher but the fire in the spirits of the people burned higher than ever. The channel has died down to a standstill as the mass awaited the inevitable.

For a very short moment, Blizzarin’s name stood at the peak of the list. The admin has done it. They had the Emperor’s masking. The people’s gaze were lifted and they became witnesses to the rise of Empress Blizzarin. Their time at the top had forever cemented itself as part of NPO lore however short it was. Screenshots ran wild and so did the storm of hails as roleplayers, governors and praetorian guards saluted the Empress with robust pride. Mere seconds felt uncommonly long whilst Empress Blizzarin looked upon their comrades in confusion and awe. Finally, the admin had ended their reign with a click of the button and the mighty red on her name disappeared as soon as it emerged. They returned to their modest responsibility as a roleplayer, the crowd still revelling in their accolades. People reported that they had achieved maximum happiness of the Order despite their minute-long stint as the Empress of the Order. It was one hell of a reign, after all.

Due to the nature of their tenure, not many Pacificans knew of them being part of a legendary list. Screenshots still exist to this day that can prove Blizzarin’s reign and some of the Pacificans who had seen it first-hand can fondly remember the one-minute monarchy. But now, you can carry this knowledge with you.
