Imperial Justice Act

Preamble

Seeing it necessary to establish a justice system for the Empire as so to process any possible traitors or criminals that may arise in the course of the Empire's growth, this Act shall become effective once signed.

Section 1: Courts and Judges

a. The position of "Chief Justice" shall be established.
b. The Chief Justice shall be responsible for hearing all cases brought before them.
c. The Chief Justice shall be appointed by HM the Emperor.
d. The Chief Justice shall be responsible for determining the guilt of the accused party or parties.
e. The Chief Justice shall issue the verdict if the accused is found guilty.
f. The Chief Justice shall be impartial in judging all cases.
g. The Chief Justice shall ask HM the Emperor to appoint a temporary judge to judge a case if the Chief Justice feels unable to remain impartial.

Section 2: Trial

a. Any citizen may bring a complaint to the Chief Justice.
b. The Chief Justice shall bring any complaint to trial if they find it to be a chargeable offense.
c. HM the Emperor, the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister, and the Foreign Minister may recommend that a complaint be brought to trial if they so choose.
d. Any citizen that is brought to trial shall be referred to as "the Defendant".
e. HM the Emperor and the Prime Minister shall appoint any citizen to act as the prosecutor.
f. The defendant is entitled to counsel of their own solicitation.
g. The court shall not compel any citizen to act as counsel.
h. A complaint may only be tried once.
i. If a defendant is found guilty, they are entitled to one appeal within a week's time.
j. A trial shall be launched within one week of the complaint being lodged.
k. The Chief Justice shall impose any punishment that they see fit.
l. Any citizen with pertinent evidence shall submit it to the court for review and use.
m. No citizen shall harass the Chief Justice, prosecution, or defendant to influence the decisions of the court.
n. The Chief Justice shall not compel citizens to act as witnesses.
o. The Chief Justice shall not compel HM the Emperor, the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister, or the Foreign Minister to surrender telegrams or chat logs as evidence.
