DSA Ocean Race 2019: Belianel's FIN

FIN (Fish Intrepid and Nonpareil) is a loose association of experienced fishermen, professional sailors, and adventure-seekers who joined to avoid the tremendously boring force of easily accessible, generously-funded college educations and padded-door-handle childhoods. Due to an incredibly fortuitous geography that enables Belianel to directly border the Peregrine Sea, with over a thousand recorded miles of coastline, and a semi-aquatic past which allowed Belianelians to hone their sea-based skills over nearly five hundred years, members of FIN pride themselves on being the most water-aligned of all the DSA nations (interestingly enough, members of FIN also happen to be overwhelmingly Cancers, Scorpios, and Pisces.) While their attunement to the aquatic environment might allow them to master the elements of the Ocean Race, it may potentially limit their willingness to push their craft to the limits of what Nature can sustain-- the most dividing principle within humankind.

(I'm incredibly bad at Photoshop, so just pretend you see a sail with the Belianelian flag on it!)

THE TEAM

Boat Captain Wyatt Cairn
Captain Wyatt Cairn is well-known through the FIN community for being a fantastic prodigy in his early youth and teen years. For five years straight, he and his partner and longtime friend, Robert Eel, took first place in the two-person sailboat division of the FINish Line Regatta, the national championship equivalent, and won Grand Marlin Magazine's Greatest Catch award three separate years. Though his success has slowed in his young adulthood due to a conflicting educational track in ethics which he is currently attending to, he is still solidly considered one of the most talented and competent sailors within current FIN cohorts. He is perhaps most well known for giving a speech at the FINal Day Banquet of his senior year which was said to bring half the room to tears and established him as a permanent media favorite.

Tactician Francesca Aguado
Tactician Francesca Aguado is a relatively new talent whose recent steep success has brought her onto her position on the FIN professional sailing team. Competing in the 9+ person Yacht division, Francesca is particularly experienced with long-distance sailing ventures, having competed 3 times in the "Don't Get Caught" International Regatta-- coming fourth, second, and first in the ten-thousand-mile police-evasion race-- and being the only presiding Überchampion of the Calendar Games-- meaning an individual who has been part of the crew of five different champion yachts for the month-long endurance races. Surprisingly unconnected to the sailing world, with two insurance-salesmen parents, and boasting an apparently nasty and ruthless temper and an incredible tactical mind, Aguado is a controversial, but undoubtedly qualified choice for Tactician of the nationally representative crew.

Driver Sebastian Douglas
Driver Seb Douglas is a reliable figure within the FIN community. Born within the fringe Sobrinyo community-- a religious and traditional sect which continues the ancient Belianese tradition of living, floating on rafts and the huge mangrove Manna leaves, on the water-- he has participated without particular distinguishment within the large, close-knit community of ocean lovers in Belianel since his earliest childhood. Known to be solemnly religious with the "strength of a money frog", he was chosen for the position of Driver in the hope that his relative inexperience with high-stakes competition will be balanced by his comfort with the water, naturalistic environmental knowledge, and steady temper.

Main Sheet Benedicte Yung
Main Sheet Benedicte Yung is a speed demon, and luckily, her position as Main Sheet allows her to dictate the general speed of the craft at all points. Having come from a childhood where agoraphobic parents held their home to strict safety standards, Yung was a well-known extreme sports fanatic in her youth and, before confining herself to sailing, held the envious position of rollercoaster tester and stuntwoman. As perhaps the most experienced member on the crew, Yung holds over 30 years of experience as a major Main Sheet on several of the most famous ships from all over the region and is well-known to have reduced the international marine trade's delivery times by an average of two weeks per trip. Her fearlessness and boisterous spirit inspired the FIN Racing Committee to place her on the qualifying ship.

Head Sail Trimmers Clio and Juno Heasai
Clio and Juno Heasai are the youngest members in the boat by far, both possessing a mere 11 years to their name. However, their incredible speed and skill as Head Sail trimmers undoubtedly qualified them to their advanced position on the championship boat. Purported twins (though they will not confirm nor deny their family relation or heritage), these two are incredibly at sync when cutting and trimming the sheet and show incredible focus and dexterity in similarly remaining in sync with any modifications within other elements of the boat. Their family is not known and their surname is apparently self-chosen to represent their dedication to their apparently all-consuming hobby; they are said to be loosely associated with/raised by the Sobrinyo community. Their participation as Head Sail trimmers on the championship Belianese Arizoya for the past five years-- which has in that period won three national championships in the Fishing Boat division-- shows their incredible accomplishment for an astonishingly young age.

Bowman Soren Poole
Bowman Soren Poole, a current college student at the famous Singfelse University, has something to prove. Though this is his first time acting as Bowman, with previous positions held being Pitman and Head Sail Trimmer, his meteoric rise these past few years led the FIN staff to believe he would accurately and flawlessly complete the duties of his station. Having always been in the upper echelons of the FIN community since middle school, Poole's hard work and dedication has paid off recently in the form of 1st-place finishes in 10 nationally-recognized regattas in the last year alone and election as president of the FIN Youth Committee, which allows him to act as an international liaison to the youth sectors of sailing organizations across the region.

Pitman Jocelyn Stellaluna Urbina
A master in communication and a well-known socialite, Josie Urbina was known to be a talented crossword- jigsaw puzzle-solver in her childhood-- in fact, the national champion for all of her secondary school years-- as well as an average-ability sailor who preferred yacht parties on weekends to the serious competitive races her similarly famous cousin, Caroline Urbina, frequently participated in and won. After the scandal created in her late teens by Caroline's competition-driven renouncement of Belianel in order to participate on the at-the-time international champion Bigtopian team, Josie took on the burden of the marine Urbina heritage, taking on a permanent position on the trophied commercial boat The Money Frog where, as a pitman, her job focused on dealing with tangled rigging and enhancing communication between different members of the crew. Her extroverted personality and charm and quick pattern-solving skills have enabled her to successfully lead the Money Frog as the premier commercial boat in Belianel for the past 4 years.

Mast Man Galahad Atwater
The irony of his name is lost on Mast Man Galahad Atwater, who in many ways represents the very stereotypical sports hero usually only associated with Belianese hockey or baseball players. More comfortable on land than at sea and said to be frequently violently ill on ships, Galahad was recruited by FIN at the Weightlifting Championships held at the athletics-focused Anheld College, the college he is currently attending. He has a strong social media presence, where he may be frequently seen posting pictures of him at the gym with the hashtag #getswole, and is said to be participating as Mast Man within this competition for "the killer pay, bro." Luckily, his position as Mast Man largely requires a central strength, in which, as a five-time Weightlifting and longtime Track and Field champion, he is indisputably champion of. Childhood friends with Urbina, he will be working alongside her to use his massive strength in executing the quickest sail maneuvers possible.

Ballast James Dallas
As Ballast, James Dallas is of average weight and possessed of fairly good swimming skills. His role is to balance the weight of the ship, so he was chosen for his exceptional balance, which he has cultivated as a member of the famous Dallas family, known for holding carnivals upon commercial ships. James is the tight-rope walker. While being nominated for a great sense of balance and basic ability to socialize, allowing him to position himself anywhere on the boat, may be flattering, one has to wonder how he'll react alongside some of the most fastidious and accomplished talents of FIN with which he will co-crew.
