Mauropolis (accented: Maurópólis), officially the Autarchate of Mauropolis, is a totalitarian dictatorship situated in and around the ruins of London, the capital of the former United Kingdom. Spanning the area that formally constituted Greater London, Mauropolis is bordered by no other polity, and is in fact surrounded by dangerous wilderness and urban ruins, continuously besieged by zombie-like creatures and highly dangerous wildlife. Mauropolisians are protected by The Wall, which surrounds the entire city and shields it from the dangers of post-apocalyptic England. The only way to access the city is through heavily militarised and guarded checkpoints on the wall, or through the Thames river gates, which are said to be harder to crack than Fort Knox. Many a bandit have met their end attempting to breach the city’s defences.

Mauropolis is known as one of the last true safe havens for humanity, and is quite possibly the most successful and largest of them all as far as anyone knows. Despite its totalitarian and controlling nature, many refugees flock to its gates, with only a handful actually managing to gain entrance and become citizens of the city. Those who do live in the city can relatively comfortable and safe lives provided they are obedient and complacent towards the regime...

Etymology

From μαυρός (maurós), meaning “black” in Ancient Greek, and πόλις (pólis), meaning “city”.

Thus, Mauropolis translates into “black city”, alluding to the city’s usually dark-coloured architecture.

Politics and Government

Mauropolis is ruled by an autocratic dictatorship led by the Autarch, the city’s head of state. The Grand Council acts as the city-state’s legislature, and its 75 seats are held by the city’s most loyal, intelligent and talented individuals. There is no democracy or popular consensus, all political promotions or appointments are discussed within the Grand Council and the decision finalised by the Autarch. The city’s districts are monitored by artificial intelligences, who then pass on reports on local situations to the government, law enforcement and economic offices.
