Brief history of your nation:

In 1786, the British Empire established a presence in Malaya, when the Sultan of Kedah leased Penang Island to the British East India Company. The British obtained the town of Singapore in 1819, and in 1824 took control of Malacca following the Anglo-Dutch Treaty. By 1826, the British directly controlled Penang, Malacca, Singapore, and the island of Labuan, which they established as the crown colony of the Straits Settlements. By the 20th century, the states of Pahang, Selangor, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan, known together as the Federated Malay States, had British residents appointed to advise the Malay rulers, to whom the rulers were bound to defer to by treaty. The remaining five states in the peninsula, known as the Unfederated Malay States, while not directly under British rule, also accepted British advisers around the turn of the 20th century. Under British rule the immigration of Chinese and Indians to serve as labourers was encouraged.

During the Second World War, the Japanese Empire invaded and occupied the Malay Peninsula and Singapore for over three years. During this time, ethnic tensions were raised and nationalism grew. Popular support for independence increased after Malaya was reconquered by Allied forces.

In 1946, the British, now firmly back in Control of their South East Asian Colonies merged the various colonies and dependencies into the "Malay Union" angering the population and further contributing to the Rise of Nationalism.

On February 1st, 1948 the Malay Union was dissolved and replaced by the Federation of Malaya. It was agreed upon by the rulers of the Malayan States that the re-establishment of the Sultanate was necessary for the unity of the nation. All Monarchs of the Malayan States agreed the Sultan would be Mukhtaar Shah the decedent of the Malacca Sultans. The Council of Rulers was also established as a means of keeping the power of the Sultan in check.

Shortly after the formation of the Malay Federation the new nation found itself combating Chinese Communist Revolutionaries primarily backed by the Soviet Union. The Aim of the Revolutionaries was to drive what remained of the British Forces out of Malaya. The Conflict with Communist Rebels lasted from 1948-1960 included the support of Commonwealth Forces, and put strain on the relationship between the State of Singapore and the rest of the Federation.

In 1957, the Malay Federation became an independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Island of Labuan was also transferred to Malayan Authority, and became a Federal Territory.

The Conflict ended in a decisive Malay/Commonwealth Victory, with the majority of Communist Forces defeated, and stability and safety returned.

During the 1980's under the leadership of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad there was a period of rapid economic growth and urbanization. The Economy of Malaya shifted from being agriculturally based to one based on manufacturing and industry.

Now, the Federation of Malaya is a strong and fast growing economy in South East Asia/Oceania. It is widely considered by many Western experts to be the next Developed country in Asia, owing to its high GDP Per Capita, the citizens of Malaya live better more affluent lives than many in neighboring States.
