The Galla - Overview

The Galla (Amharic: ጋላ, also known as The Gallaland, Gallaland) is a country located in the Horn of Africa, in East Africa. It is bordered to the northwest by Sudan, to the east by Somalia, to the south by Kenya. The Galla is the most populous country in East Africa, and the fifth most populous country in Africa. The Galla is has a total land area of 480,800 sq mi², and is located at the heart of the East African Rift, which is the epicenter for earthquake activity in the region.

Politics
The Galla's government is run by a one-party state known as the Grand Council. The Grand Council concerns itself with the conduct of lower levels of political representation, such as mayors or governors which are voted into position in local elections. However, civilians do not vote for members of the Grand Council. Members of the Grand Council are selected by the Keepers of The Grand Council. The Keepers are in charge of ensuring that the day to day functions of the Grand Council go smoothly. Often, they are also famously involved in certain parts of civilian life, such as aviation or nursing. Finally, the Keepers are chosen personally by the Meri (Amharic for "leader"), who is currently the aging founder of The Galla, Mekonnen Zekulu Ketema.

The Grand Council
The citizenry have no say in who gets selected into the Grand Council. Instead, the Keepers select members based on the merit of the individual. Civil servants, governors, former generals or otherwise decorated servicemen are usually selected by the Keepers. Notable professors and scientists are also chosen from time to time. Members commit to the position for the rest of their lives, unless they resign or are voted out.

Grand Council members concern themselves with issues of national importance, discussing and voting on topics such as trade, budgets, urbanization plans and military affairs. Committees are usually formed to tackle these issues.

The Keepers of The Grand Council
As of 2011, there are 3 Keepers, 2 of which fought in the Revolution and subsequent Pacification Wars. The third Keeper, Azmera Mussie Ebissa, is only 37 years old. He was selected following his brief yet impactful work in modernizing the education system in urban areas. Keepers select Grand Council Members and are actively engaged in civilian life. The oldest keeper at 70 years old, Mengistu Tsega Admassu, is known for his aviation exploits during the Revolution, and after the war has helped created the foundations for the domestic and military aviation industries in The Galla. At 58 years old, Andromeda Mihret Mengesha distinguished herself during the Pacification Wars as a dedicated commander, with special care to treating prisoners of war that was unheard of amongst the Gallan forces at the time. For her efforts in maintaining civil order in the lowlands, she was chosen by The Meri.

The MERI - Leader of The Grand Council
Finally, the current Meri is Mekonnen Zekulu Ketema, founder of The Galla. At 86 years old, we fought on the East African Front in WW2 under the command of famous Italian cavalry officer Amedeo Guillet. After the war he lived in Asmara, where he formed the Tappi Rossi secret society in 1960. The Tappi Rossi spread anti-imperial propaganda, and began recruiting soldiers and support from wealthy urbanites who were also against the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. After years of crackdowns and abuses from the imperial government, he announced the revolution in late 1973. Fighting occurred in the major cities, as the weak dynasty tried to hold onto power. With a collapsing economy and dozens of soldiers deserting by the day, the revolution was gaining ground. By February 22, 1974, the Ethiopian Empire was dissolved and The Galla was formed.

Prelude to the Revolution (1946 - 1974)

Following the Second World War, Emperor Haile Selassie was placed back into power by the British Empire. Selassie made several token attempts to modernize Ethiopia, all of which ended in failure. Famines and general peasant uprisings were frequent as the starved population was purposely kept poor as a way to insulate the ruling class.

Simultaneously, former Eritrean Ascari (Italian Colonial Troops) were having frequent meetings in Asmara. In cafes and bars, these soldiers created a secret society that spread radical literature which resisted the Monarchy. The society, known as the Tappi Rossi (Red Caps in Italian), spread literature influenced by Italian futurism and fascism, which they studied in the past as recruits for the colonial army. Visits to Italy allowed them to retrieve further material and adapt it in Asmara.
