BREAKING: Bulgars, Albania invade Macedonia

Brussels. Unconfirmed reports of military units entering Macedonia have been broadcast by media in the country.

According to a Macedonian Ministry of Defence spokesman, columns of armoured vehicles and trucks carrying soldiers have broken through border crossings on both the eastern and western borders of the country. Macedonia borders Greater Socialist Albania to the West, and the Bulgar Rouge state to the East.

If confirmed, these events would mark yet another escalation on the Balkans provoked by the self-styled agrarian revolutionary state of Bulgar Rouge and its regional ally, Albania.

Videos shot by citizens of Skopje seem to show two warplanes flying over the Macedonian capital, though it was not immediately clear who they belonged to.

An urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council has been called. NATO has "expressed concern" and a spokesman said that the Alliance was "closely monitoring" the situation. Neither Bulgarian nor Albanian representatives could be reached for comment through their consulates in Brussels. The absence of media in the two closed communist states makes it difficult to assess their activity and no locals could be reached for comment.

The reports come after Albania and Bulgaria announced an agreement to build a 150 kV power line to supply power-strapped Albania with electricity from Bulgarian power stations. Analysts were questioning the viability of the project as both Serbia and Macedonia had refused to cooperate with the two communist countries on infrastructure. The military operation may thus seek to submit or annex Macedonia to further integrate the Albanian and Bulgarian economies.
