How Economic Data is Calculated in the United States of Independence Hill | 3.9

Independence Hill Regional Economic Report

Welcome to the United States of Independence Hill RP tutorial. This comprehensive tutorial will show you how to keep track of your stats, add enhancement stats, and how to open living, breathing markets. You chose an awesome RP strategy to learn about. Let's get started!

{} = UTN | $ = NSD | XAG = Silver | £ = Pound | ¥ = Proweri Yen | H$ = Harryan Dollar | A£ = Duck Billed Plat | $$ = US Dollar | ∆ = New Risa

Above is a list of symbols of registered currencies. Why would you need registered currencies? Because every nation has a different currency with a different exchange rate. Even you. If you're role playing as a bank, registering your friendly neighbor's currency gives you authorization to sell it on a foreign-to-foreign market that you'll create. You also want to display these registered currencies as a courtesy to those nations. Who doesn't enjoy free advertising for their region or nation? We'll explain more about what a foreign-to-foreign market is later on in this tutorial.

We're the Official Bank of:

If you're role playing as a bank, it's a good idea to canvas your embassies to see if they'd be interested in having you as their official bank. This is good for both parties because you'll gain social credit from others who RP and they'll be featured on your balance sheet, which will attract nations to want to join their region. Above is just one way to feature these regions. As the bank, you'll want to know things about who you're representing, like exchange rates, currency names and symbols, GDP figures, etc, so you can display these items.

(technical): The whole idea revolves around your spreadsheet and its ability to be refreshed at the intervals you're using in your RP without you having to do very much work at all besides hitting a refresh button and recording RP money movement. Technical instructions in this tutorial will be for Microsoft Excel only. What you'll want to do in this section is look up these region names on your favorite NS calculator. Open a few blank sheets in your excel window, with the first sheet being your RP balance sheet. Go to the second sheet. At the top, click data. Then click any box on that second sheet. At the top right hand side, you'll see a button called 'from the web.' Copy the link of the region you looked up using your favorite NS calculator, and paste it into a box that will pop up on excel. Hit 'ok.' It will gather a table of information from that NS calculator. Then a box will pop up asking if you'd like to open a brand new sheet or use the existing sheet. Click 'use existing sheet.' Then click 'ok.' Now go to your first sheet and click the cell you want your report to begin at. In that cell, type =, then go to your second sheet, click the information you want to display, and hit enter. You'll automatically be taken back to the first page and the cell you chose will be displaying the information you told it to. For simplicity, you'll want to at least emulate the style of display above for ease of use but there is no one particular way to layout the information. Repeat the same instructions for other bits of data you'd like to display. If you have any questions or need help forming data connects, please message me and I'll be glad to help.

General

(data gathered from Broomdces)

Total Population: 53,496,000,000
Criminals: 3,606,920,136.00
Elderly, Retired, & Disabled: 5,969,511,254.00
Military: 1,419,629,836.00
Students & Youth: 10,524,148,000.00
Total Unemployed: 6,767,943,839.00

Total Employed: 25,207,846,936.00
(It is assumed that 'total employed' takes into account the populations from the other groups, except 'unemployed.')

Regional Economy

(I added the stats of the money supply, savings & investment, and velocity of money- GRP and exchange rate stat gathered from NSDossier, Imports & Exports gathered from NSEconomy, income brackets are gathered from NS API Shards, Consumer spending is actually consumption and it's gathered from NSEconomy, Unemployment is also gathered from NSEconomy.)

GRP: {}1,204,562,997,162,030.00 | $2,349,764,861,415,540.00
GRP Per Capita: {}22,516.88 |_$43,924.12

Money Supply: {}1,154,562,997,162,030.00 |_$2,252,228,872,556,860.00
(money supply is GRP - {}50,000,000,000,000. However much is purchased of your currency on the money market is also subtracted from the money supply. You can manually adjust the money supply but it will impact velocity of money)

Velocity of Money: 1.0433
(velocity of money is GDP or GRP divided by the money supply. Higher velocities indicate higher degrees of inflation and activity. Lower velocities indicate the exact opposite.)

Exchange Rate: {}1.00 = $1.95
(For every $10 trillion NSD invested in your money market, add one cent to the exchange rate.)

Imports: {}138,814,767,705,317.00 |_$270,788,712,726,528.00
Exports: {}138,814,768,006,105.00 |_$270,788,713,313,280.00
(add international spending to imports and international revenue to exports, as that incorporates your RP activity on GE&T)

Trade Balance: {}300,787.44 |_$586,752.00
(the trade balance is reflective of your nation's regular activity along with your activity in economic RP.)

Avg Income of the Poorest 10%: {}31,411.64 |_$61,275.31
Avg Income of the Middle Class: {}121,573.64 |_$237,156.11
Avg Income of the Richest 10%: {}428,650.43 |_$836,176.87

Consumer Spending: {}589,372,773,805,455.00 |_$1,149,701,125,989,990.00
(Add your international spending from your economic RP to your consumption. Even though GRP - consumer speding = savings & private investment, adding to the GRP will cause looping errors on your spreadsheet. Do not add to the GRP.)

Savings & Private Investment: {}615,190,223,356,579.00 |_$1,200,063,735,425,550.00

Unemployment Rate: 12.72%
(In reality, interest rates affect the unemployment rate. In this system, however, it's the other way around. The unemployment rate affects the interest rate. NS stats are fiscal policy-driven. Governments can lower taxes, spend on infrastructure, etc via answering issues. However, monetary policy influences money supply, interest rates, and quantitative easing & tightening efforts. In the way economic data is calculated in the United States of Independence Hill, monetary policy is simulated to react to the actions of fiscal policy. Note: Not everything in reality can be emulated with high precision in the game.)

Notice how you have two columns- one for your currency and the other for the value to be displayed in NSD. When you go to load your data table for GRP/GDP, you're going to want to load it to the NSD side. In the cell to the left of it, you're going to want to put '=' then the name of the cell you put your GRP/GDP in and divide that by your exchange rate. Of course, you'll want to know what your exchange rate is. Here's the NSDossier formula to find your exchange rate:
=SQRT((GDP/GRP per capita*Economic Productivity)/404000000)

If you develop a foreign-to-domestic money market and other nations start buying your currency, add 0.01 for every $10 Trillion NSD they've invested. For example, if they spend $52 trillion, you'll want to add at the end of the exchange rate equation +0.052.

Exchange Rate by State

(data taken from Broomdces)

(Your currency depends on the ratio of your population to your GDP. The higher per capita GDP, the higher the value of your currency. Only time, money market activity, and answering issues moves the numbers.)

Foreign Real Estate Investment

(Every time a nation chooses to use a particular financial instrument, such as buying real estate fund shares, buying or selling product, or investing in a money market, it's a good idea to record each transaction and make the applicable ones renew every NS year. The expansion of the balance sheet through the economic interactions initiated by other nations is directly correlated to international economic growth.

Money Market

(How it works: A nation or region buys your currency by making a deposit and sells it back to you when it appreciates in value. You have three columns. In column 1, you have the names of the investing nations. In column 2, you have amounts of your currency owned by investing nations. In column 3, you have the value of the investment in NSD.

When a nation makes a deposit in NSD, you'll convert it to your currency and put it in column 2. Then you'll multiply the amount in your currency by your exchange rate and put that figure in column 3. This ties the investment to the exchange rate, which means that these account values will rise and fall with it. For every $10 trillion NSD invested in your currency, add once cent to your exchange rate. The total of your currency owned in the money market by either yourself and/or foreign nations, subtract from the money supply.

You will notice that as soon as you're finished, that either a profit or a loss has already occurred. That's just the system doing it's job. The longer the account is open, the more likely you'll make a profit. ) Message me if you need help.

Domestic Credit Market

(The domestic credit market is my invented stat. It provides the nation's private consumers a line of credit and their payments add up to whatever percentage excel calculates. This percentage, as well as the default rate, can either increase or decrease. To keep things simple, we bailout what is left so the credit market doesn't inevitably implode. It's probably the most stable build thus far.)

Black Market

(data gathered from Broomdces)

(Keep in mind that buying & selling used goods out of your garage or yard is technically dealing in the black market. Not everything in the black market is illegal. I would assume 45-48% of the black market is the purchase and sales of used goods with the rest being illegal activity. That illegal activity is reflective of how much you're over or under governing your nation or region. Even accounting for second-hand sales activity, the example below shows a significant amount of money that could be otherwise included in the economy. The only way to cut the black market is to avoid over-regulation of industry, corruption, and over-reaching government. Avoiding those three things won't completely eliminate the black market but it will extremely benefit your nation.)

(Tax rate gathered from Broomdces, Domestic Revenue is all the tax money paid from all 15 states, International revenue is money made from dealings with other nations on the GE&T forum, Domestic Spending is how much your total domestic government budget is, International Spending is how much you pay for dealings with other nations on the GE&T forum. The budget, depending on the state of your nation's economy, can either be a surplus or deficit. Money that isn't spent collects over time, so, even if you run into a deficit, you're still not totally broke.)

As one can see by reviewing this balance sheet, this is a machine for growing and legitimizing a math-based free market system. Supplies and pricing provide constraint within the bounds of realism, the featuring of nations fosters good foreign relations, the featuring of the names of the storefronts provides courtesy advertising to trade partners, and the system itself, which is powered by three different data sources, NSDossier, Broomdces, and NationStates API shards, as well as my own equations produces predictable results.

Smaller regions and individual nations using this system will see more swings in their numbers. The smaller you are, the more of an impact answering issues has. The larger you are, the harder it is to make changes to your nation. Example- it's proven rather difficult to lower my taxes because those changes answer issues produces are infinitesimal at my scale. However, I have done a very good job at keeping the tax rate from going too far past 70%. I'm trying to cut taxes without compromising our universal healthcare system.

Back to recording contracts- If this system does one thing for you, if nothing else, it's that it allows you to keep track of your economic RP. If you're smooth enough, you might find ways to plug your international incidents RP into your economic RP.

If anyone reading this wants to implement this system for themselves and needs help, please message me and we'll talk.
