Crime

Although since the mid 90s crime and gang culture has been on the decline, the period between 1935 and 1995 saw a rise of several gangs that control significant portions of the country in their respective territories.
The fairly chaotic post revolutionary period between 1981-1995 saw a sharp rise in gang membership, street and prison wars, drug and human trafficking, extortion, racketeering and other problems.
The overwhelming majority of these gangs were formed in the 40's as protection from racist police and hate groups funded by the government at the time. Although as said before, this had sharply declined in recent decades gang culture has had a significant impact on day to day life for the working class and lumpen population. Most are divided by race/ethnicity, and prisons are heavily self segregated.
The "Big Four" prison gangs hold the most power and control all aspects of gangs on the outside. Once a gang members prison their outside affiliation is put away and they must be subservient to the prison gang of their race, even if that means taking orders from someone who would normally be an enemy on the streets.
These prison gangs are made of those who are considered worthy of being recruited into their ranks and all outside gang ties are discarded.
