EVANDAAG | Stabilize the Periphery

WRITTEN BY ANNE-MARIJE ROMAATEA | POLITICS

THE HAGUE — 8 January 2026

The Stats General of the Benelux convened for the opening session of this year with a speech to both houses by Prime Minister Mark Rutte. In that speech, delivered before a packed chamber with cameras reeling and flashing, Rutte — now the longest serving leader in Europe — outlined a program of domestic reform to the body at great length. What could be argued as the most pivotal was the Prime Minister's remarks, though, were in reference to the on-going crises in Finnmark and the Middle East.

[…] Finnmark’s snow is melting beneath a wave of heat and hatred. Lebanon is pressed beneath the boot of irredentist, and the Red Sea is choked with ships of war under an umbrella of advanced missile systems… with so many threats in our immediate surrounding; Europe must drop the yoke of Individualism, and take on the mantle of leadership.

Ermanism, an ideology which blended tenants of conservative Liberalism, and Nationalism, has consistently been regarded as a great stain upon the European project. A point used to point fingers at the EU in its attempt to provide moral leadership, and the ‘cause’ of the rise of nationalist movements across the globe from Italy, to the SGRI [before its fall], to Greece, Zaire, and even Japan. 20 years after the departure of Katherine Erman from the Chancellorship of Germany, and only months since her death, the effects of her leadership and its influence upon current thinking across the globe is evidenced by the EU’s slowed reaction to recent events. In Finnemark, Erman’s cold hands captivate the minds of European leaders who stand ready to uphold the North Atlantic Treaty, but only with hesitancy due to sympathy with the plight of residents there in whose name, Finland (Amsterwald) conducted its “Liberation”. In Lebanon, European leaders maintain that our stand should be with the Lebanese — but that our hands are tied by NATO obligations and the need to support balance in the region. All the while, the on-going Cold War between the newly declared Abdulrahman Caliphate (Alzarikstan) and the Galla (Mesuvia), pits Member against Member as the EU’s internal fault lines are exploited by both states who actively appeal to the national interest of individual member states. Thus, again, the EU has shown itself incapable of acting with one voice on this most vital issue which carries with it the possibility of severing vital shipping lanes to the Far East.

Those divisions, a side effect of the Union’s current structure act as rust upon an otherwise well oiled machine, delaying both measured and sweeping actions alike, and causing nations in the EU to act unilaterally to not leave our allies alone, and to force the European Council to hasten an otherwise slow process.

According to Prime Minister Rutte, the European Project has reached the end of this current phase — and arrived to the point where Europeans must ask themselves which ideology will carry us forward. Nationalism/Individualism or Federalism/Collectivism. For one must reign upon this continent, lest we be overrun by strongmen and those who flee them — or remain dependent upon foreign powers for our protection and guidance.

In either case, the fact remains true that Europe must act swiftly to stabilize its borderlands, soon, before instability comes knocking at our own doors.
