“We probably only picked up about 5% so far. Remember, it’s been less than two weeks,” she said.
Crews that include contractors have been working to clear debris that piled up after Helene, which flooded the coasts and made landfall in the Big Bend area on Sept. 26, but there hasn’t been enough time or resources, she said.
“A lot of our contractors have gone to prep for Hurricane Milton,” Byer said.
Coastal parts of Hillsborough County, which is home to Tampa, are under a storm surge warning, and the whole county and a huge swath of the state is under a hurricane warning.
An estimated six million Floridians were ordered to evacuate, marking one of the largest evacuation orders in state history since Hurricane Irma in 2017
On October 5, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency.
Hurricane and tropical storm warnings were declared for the Florida West Coast on October 7.
