Lacian RolePlay Hub

What is RolePlay? RolePlay (RP) is essentially a grand story, which can be told from the eyes of a character, a state apparatus, or an omniscient narrator. This story is a cooperative effort that is created by contributions from all members of the RolePlay community you are in, which in this case is Lacia. A lot of RolePlaying in Lacia focuses on diplomatic relations between other nations in the region and interactions between its governments. Many of these RolePlays center around a few specific people and their interactions. The primary way of posting roleplay posts on Lacia is through the third person, past tense "newspaper" style. Why should I join? RolePlay extends beyond the issue answering and gameplay mechanics of NationStates. It takes place in it's own separate world and allows for more creative thinking and writing. It is through these complexities, that our nations truly come to life. What is Lacia? How do I join? Where do I post? How do I communicate with other players? What is the Economic System? -Building things (cities, ports, etc.) - 1 Point
Lacia is the name of the RP planet and is the official roleplay of Astellaria. The map is over one year old, beginning in March of 2024.
Telegram
Kelban Island if you would like to join the RP. Include in your telegram the place on the map you want to claim, and the position of your capital. Do note however, that since most of Lacia is currently colonized, you would have to negotiate with a colonial power on whehter or not they would like to grant you a spot.
Astellaria operates it's own forum separate from the NationStates forums, on
astellaria.zya.me
For easy communication with other roleplay players, we recommend you join the regional Discord, where we have dedicated threads for discussing the Lacian RP. For those that are not able to access Discord, you may also reach out to fellow players through telegrams or through the dedicated "OOC Chat" thread on the Astellarian forum.
Good question! The economic system is a unique system to the Lacian Roleplay. It is essentially an IC economy that uses points which can be spent in developing your nation. As of currently , you get points at the start of every Gregorian month, with a point tax of -1. The Economic system is a way to limit the capabilities of Nations in the RP, and make the world of Lacia more realistic. Players will be able to spend by sending posts on the Lacian RP Forum on the prepared for that topic. These points you can use to build things like cities, ports, etc. But they are also used for paying taxes, which at the start are 1 point monthly for every nation. Keep that in mind, as if you go negative in your Points you will start to lose your economy (economy will get worse, and economic points will also start to fall). The list of things you can do is here (this list is still WIP and things can be added here):
-Raising armies - 1 Point
-Building up your economy - 1 Point monthly
-Opening gun workshop (made for construction fire weapons and researching on them) - 2 Points + 1 Point Monthly (if you are on every other continent than Valoria or Lythoria, the price is 4 Points + 2 Points Monthly)
-Religious decisions - 1 Point
-Expanding armies - 1 Point
-Establishing full-time armies - 2 Points monthly
-Colonizing:
Sending Expeditions - 2 Points + 1 Point monthly
Establishing a colony - 2 Points + 1 Point monthly
Expanding colonies - 2 Points + 1 more point monthly (till the terrain map update comes out)
Sending expeditions in to unknown lands - 3 Points + 2 Points Monthly (this gives you the chance to establish 3 colonies max in this expedition, but the rules of colonies are the same)
Colonizing territories occupied by tribes - 2 Points + 1 Point monthly + War with a tribe
-Wars:
Wars on mainland defensive - 1 Point + 2 Points monthly
Wars on mainland offensive - 2 Points + 1 Point monthly
Wars outside of mainland defensive - 2 Points + 3 Points monthly
Wars outside of mainland offensive - 3 Points + 2 Points monthly
Battles on water - 1 Point
Crusades - 2 Points + 1 Point monthly to the Church
-Taxes - At the start, 1 Point monthly per nation (can change in future)
The world of Lacia is an ancient world, spanning back millenia. We've had several versions of our RP in the past, however we recently launched our full version of the Lacian RP in May. The starting year was 1725, however you can check the current RP year on our WFE.

The answer is a carefully agreed upon set of norms that is in play across the NationStates roleplay world. For Lacia, we generally employ the rules laid down during our previous region in Aspen, which are the following. 1. Separation between IC and OOC IC or In Character is you through the eyes of your persona 2. No Godmodding 3. No Metagaming Example: If someone else's character shows their plans OOC, your character or nation may not act on them until they are discovered IC. 4. Follow the Script 5. Consent in Roleplay Example: Declaration of wars or assassination of an important character should be pre-discussed. 6. Creative Freedom 7. Collaborative Storytelling Example: Discuss and plan major events such as alliances, wars, or disasters through OOC. 8. Post Quality and Format Example: [OOC: Let's plan the battle in DMs] or --End OOC--. 9. Open Power Scaling Example: It is OK to have a superpower if it is in a future RP, but never forcefully destroy other people's stories. 10. Flexible Realism Example: A medieval RP cannot have advanced robotics unless this is part of the established setting. 11. Handling IC Consequences Example: If you invade another nation, discuss potential outcomes OOC. 12. Minimal Retconning Example: “Let’s pretend that battle didn’t happen” is acceptable if everyone supports the retcon. 13. Resolve Conflicts OOC 14. Story Above Winning 15. Embrace Flexibility 16. Be Respectful Let me also redirect you to this handy guide on RP: Welcome to this tragically necessary guide on how to engage in roleplay (RP) without making everyone around you consider an impromptu hiatus. If you're reading this, you likely fall into one of three categories: You're new and need guidance (adorable, i shall educate you). You've committed an RP atrocity and were lovingly directed here by your peers (congratulations, you're that guy). You enjoy my delightful wit and simply want a laugh (excellent taste, carry on). Whatever your reason, read the guide. Absorb its wisdom. Become less of a menace to society. ´ Roleplaying in NationStates is collaborative storytelling where you pretend to be a country. Yes, that's right, you, a person who probably struggles to manage their own sleep schedule, are now responsible for an entire nation. God help them. Some take it seriously, crafting rich lore with nuance. Others name their leader 'Big Daddy Supreme' and immediately declare war on Belgium. Both approaches are, in their own way, a cry for help. Before you even think about writing your first RP post, take a deep breath and repeat after me: 'I am not the most important person in the world. My nation is not the greatest thing to ever exist since sliced bread. Other players exist.' If this concept distresses you, I recommend stepping outside and experiencing the revolutionary concept known as 'other humans.' Read the Room (or the Thread) Before Charging In Nothing ruins an otherwise decent RP faster than someone showing up uninvited and dropping a 5,000-word monologue about their ultra-futuristic space empire in a medieval fantasy setting. Before posting, read what others have written. Skim at the very least. No, really. It's not that hard. Godmodding: The Art of Making Everyone Hate You Godmodding is when your nation or character is inexplicably invincible, omniscient, or otherwise immune to logic, reason, and consequences. Nobody likes the guy whose army is invincible, whose economy has infinite money, and whose leader is a mix of Batman, Sun Tzu, He-Man and Jesus. Play fair. Metagaming: How to Look Like a Total Amateur Just because you read someone's secret war plans doesn't mean your character knows it. If your leader is reacting to classified information they had no way of obtaining, you're metagaming, and everyone now knows you lack basic self-control. Not Every Nation Is the Size of Russia You are not a global superpower unless you've actually put in the effort to build a believable history, economy, and military. Slapping 'My nation has 500 million active troops and a Death Star' into your factbook means nothing. Try again. The Economy Is a Thing. A Very Important Thing. If your nation is 'totally self-sufficient' while importing nothing and producing everything, you have just invented a magical fairyland. Nations have trade, inflation, and logistics to deal with, ignoring those makes your RP about as realistic as a Michael Bay movie. Your People Are Not Mindless Drones No, your citizens are not 100% loyal, 100% happy, and 100% efficient. They have grievances, politicians argue, and revolts happen. If your RP never acknowledges domestic unrest, corruption or political opposition, then you are RPing a dystopian nightmare, whether you meant to or not. Logistics Win Wars, Not Cool Tanks It doesn't matter if your army has the best tanks in the world if you can't fuel them, repair them, or transport them where they need to go. Wars are won by supply chains, not just by who has the most anime-inspired battleships. Nukes Are Not Pokémon Nukes are not the 'I win' button that some players think they are. Using them without any thought for diplomatic repercussions, MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), or basic human decency will result in nobody taking you seriously ever again. No, You Cannot Shoot Down Everything A common mistake among new RPers is assuming that their 'perfect' missile defense system will always work. In reality, missile defense is difficult, expensive, and not foolproof. If someone launches 100 ICBMs at you and you claim to intercept every single one… yeah, no. Not Every Disagreement Leads to War If every minor diplomatic spat with your nation results in full-scale war, you are doing it wrong. Real-life diplomacy involves negotiation, trade agreements, and alliances, not just 'You insulted my leader's cat, PREPARE FOR TOTAL ANNIHILATION!' You Are Not the Center of the Universe Other players nations are just as important as yours. If your diplomacy consists of treating every other country as either an enemy or a vassal state, expect to be ignored or outright ridiculed. Not Every Nation Will Like You If you RP as an isolationist dictatorship, don't expect hugs from democratic nations. Play the role, but don't whine when people treat your nation accordingly. If It Sounds Stupid, It Probably Is If your leader is somehow a 15-year-old warlord with an IQ of 300 who single-handedly united the world under one flag, just… no. No. No. Please, for the Love of Everything that's Holy, Use Punctuation. Sentences exist for a reason. If your RP post looks like a chaotic wall of text with no breaks, commas or capitalization, people will not read it. And no, 'it's just my style' is not an excuse for making people's eyes bleed. Third-Person, Past Tense – Use It Unless you're doing first-person RP for a very specific reason, stick to third-person past tense. It's the standard for most RPs. Show, Don't Tell Instead of writing, 'The Supreme Leader was very scary,' write, 'As the Supreme Leader entered the room, even the generals instinctively straightened their backs, their eyes darting away from his gaze.' See? More engaging! Dialogue Is Important Imagine a real conversation. Would a human actually say what you just typed? If not, rewrite it. Unless your character is an alien diplomat struggling with basic English, in which case, go nuts. Quality Over Quantity A long post is not automatically a good post. If you just wrote 3,000 words describing your character's breakfast but forgot to move the plot forward, please rethink your life choices. Battleships in the 21st Century Nukes for Every Problem Stealth Everything Super Soldiers Practically unstoppable in combat. Equipped with insane, ultra-futuristic gear. Apparently unlimited in number, despite being 'elite' In reality, special forces are small, highly trained units, not entire armies of terminators. Every Nation Is a Superpower Air Forces With 10,000 Fighter Jets Superhuman Leaders Invincible Economies Space Empires… in a Modern-Day Setting To determine whether your roleplay is actually good, ask yourself the following: Would real people act like this? If I were someone else, would I actually enjoy reading my posts? Does my country make sense, or have I just thrown together a bunch of tropes? Am I allowing other players to have fun or am I just treating this like my personal fanfiction? If you can pass this test, congratulations! You may just be on your way to not being an RP disaster. At the end of the day, RP is about fun. If your actions make the game less fun for others, reconsider them. If you're unsure whether something is fair, ask. Follow these tips, and you'll be well on your way to RPing like an actual human being, or at least a very convincing one. Now go forth and RP responsibly!
Waging War
One major aspect of RolePlay is waging war. After all, when you are roleplaying a country in a fictional world like Lacia, conflicts are bound to happen. And there have been a lot of conflicts - from civil to global. Since NationStates does not have a war feature like let's say Politics and War, how is war waged in a roleplay setting?
Always separate IC actions and behavior from OOC discussions.
IC actions are those that reflect your character or nation's persona.
OOC discussions are for planning, clarifications, or resolving conflicts.
OOC or Out of Character is you as the player.
Godmodding refers to controlling another player's character or nation without permission or making your actions infallible (e.g., invincible armies, unstoppable weapons).
Example: Declaring victory in a war without giving the other party a chance to respond.
Don't use OOC knowledge to influence your IC decisions.
In some global conflicts that involve major world powers, there sometimes is a script of events created by RP Administration based on the desired and agreed upon outcome of the war by all parties involved. You should do your best to follow the script, whether or not it involves victory or defeat for your nation.
Get OOC permission for major actions that directly impact another player's nation, character, or storyline. DO NOT randomly make decisions that will significantly affect the other party without their knowledge.
You are free to create your nation, characters, and story arcs as you see fit, so long as they are consistent with the setting of the RP and do not interfere with others' stories.
Roleplay is a collaborative activity. Work with others to co-create compelling narratives.
Write clear, engaging posts, but do not stress about perfection. Use proper formatting to delineate IC content from OOC comments.
Nations, characters, or factions can have any level of power as long as it's reasonable within the RP setting and doesn't disrupt the balance.
RP can range from ultra-realistic to wildly fantastical, depending on the agreed-upon setting. Keep within the context of the RP but allow yourself creative freedom.
Be prepared for logical consequences to IC actions. However, the extent of consequences should be negotiated if they heavily impact others' stories.
Avoid changing past IC events unless all parties involved agree.
Use OOC discussions to handle disputes or misunderstandings. If needed, involve a neutral mediator for fairness.
Focus on telling great stories rather than “winning” IC conflicts. The narrative should be enjoyable for everyone.
Be open to creative freedom and unexpected developments. Allow stories to evolve organically without stepping on others' toes.
Please be respectful to other players, as they also want a good time worldbuilding and roleplaying. Do not resolve every conflict you have with others with 5000 word paragraphs insulting the other player's entire bloodline.

For some reason, NationStates RP is full of things that should have been left in bad action movies or discarded history books, yet they persist like an unkillable cockroach. Here are some of the worst offenders:
Despite the fact that battleships have been obsolete since World War II, some players insist on RPing them as the pinnacle of naval warfare. In reality, they're giant, expensive targets that modern aircraft, submarines and missiles would turn into scrap metal within minutes. There's a reason why actual militaries don't use them.
Disagreement with another nation? Nuke them. Trade deal didn't go your way? Nuke them. Someone has bad breath? Nuke them.
Here's a reality check: The moment you start flinging nukes around like confetti, expect everyone to either laugh at you or ignore your RP entirely.
Some nations claim to have completely undetectable stealth bombers, fighters, submarines and even tanks (somehow). In reality, stealth technology reduces detection range but doesn't make things invisible. If your entire military is 'undetectable,' congratulations, you're writing bad science fiction.
For some reason, every nation's military must have elite warriors that make Navy SEALs look like mall cops. These troops are:
If every nation in your RP has 500 nukes, 20 carriers, and a GDP greater then the U.S., you've broken any sense of scale. Superpowers are rare. Be realistic about your nation's capabilities or embrace being the underdog.
Your nation's air force has 10,000 state-of-the-art stealth fighters? Where are you storing them? Who's maintaining them? Do you have an unlimited budget? Modern fighter jets are expensive to build and maintain, most real-world superpowers only operate a few hundred at best. If you're fielding thousands, you might as well say they run on magic.
Your leader is not a 19-year-old genius warlord economist diplomat inventor gigachad who single-handedly rules with an iron fist while also being universally beloved. Real leaders make mistakes, have flaws, and rely on advisors. If your head of state is a flawless demigod, they're not a character, they're a self-insert power fantasy.
Your nation has zero unemployment, no inflation, infinite resources, and never experiences economic crises? That's not worldbuilding, that's fantasy. Every real-world economy has fluctuations, recessions and trade dependencies. Ignoring these makes your RP as believable as a Saturday morning cartoon.
If your nation has faster-than-light travel, intragalactic colonies and god-tier technology, why are you even talking to Earth-bound nations? What do you want from these primitive beings? Shouldn't you be off conquering the universe instead of arguing over trade agreements with medieval kingdoms?

10. The Golden Rule: Have Fun, but Don't Ruin It for Others

No nation is truly an island. Even the most isolationist nation will have some minimal interaction with the world. And for every international dispute, war is not always the answer. Mastering the delicate art of diplomacy in multipolar worlds such as Lacia is an important part to ensure your nation's continued survival, especially in a time of great political division. So, how is diplomacy conducted in Lacia? In the world of Lacia, there are alliances - from colonial unions like the Cyrusian Commonwealth, economic alliances like the Triumvirate, and global military alliances like the Primordial Alliance. These alliances are one way for a nation to interact diplomatically with other nations on the map, giving you a greater voice within Lacian politics, especially if you are a small nation. In addition to these alliances, you can also enter into negotiations with other states, but you must reach out to the player in question first through discord or NS telegrams. Additionally, on the regional discord is a Lacian Conferences Server, made for nations to discuss treaties and borders especially after the conclusion of major world conflicts like the Windusian Civil War or the Third World War.
The big one is Nazism, or any ultranationalist right wing ideology that seeks to conduct a genocide of a certain ethnic group in a large, organized and premeditated manner. A fascist ideology is any ideology defined as: Regimes that meet these criteria shall be considered fascist. Stance on RP Fascism: Allowed, with some limitations. You are allowed to make use of Fascism in RP, however, be tasteful with RPing it. Do not glorify it way too much. There should be opposition, at least some objection to an openly fascist regime. Do not write OOC remarks praising it, especially when conducting fascist actions. When in doubt whether your post violates these rules, ask. Ex: Do not use it to LARP OOC fash power trips. RP Moderation reserves the right to change details of your post if it violates these rules. By joining the Lacian RP, you agree to these terms and conditions.
- Ultranationalist ideology, form of nationalism in which a country asserts or maintains hegemony, supremacy, or other forms of control over other nations (usually through violent coercion) to pursue its specific interests associated with the engagement of political violence even during peacetime
- Belief in a natural social hierarchy resulting in mass genocide of a certain specific and targeted ethnic and religious groups.
- Manifested through revival of former glory, manifest destiny
- War as a means of political rejuvenation
- Ingroup-outgroup opposition
Do not be blunt with the naming. Come up with different names if you can, especially with nono style ideologies.
Don't: Nazism
Do: Nerolism
