M360 Vargr

The M360 Vargr (Old Norse for destroyer and originally meaning wolf) is an amphibious-capable Manouevre Support Vehicle (MSV) based on the same platform as the M350 Fenrir family of vehicles (FoV) with an 80% commonality of components. It is designed to be deployed alongside the M350, combining the qualities of firepower, protection, mobility, and rapid deployability to provide direct fire support on the beach during opposed landings, and reduction of obstacles, fortifications and strongpoints, and defeat of armoured threats inland. In common with the M350 it has a ship-to-shore, shore-to-shore and river crossing capability with a wave-piercing prow, hydrodynamic buoyant hull and rear water jet propulsion. A hybrid-electric drive with front power pack, electro-mechanical transmission, high torque electric in-hub traction motors with run-flat tyres and independent suspension allows high moblity on/in varied terrain and conditions. Three crewmembers (commander, gunner and driver) are accommodated in a cockpit-style crew compartment inside a centre hull armoured capsule with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) collective protection system including air filtration and positive overpressure, and climate control to reduce crew fatigue. The vehicle has a load bearing armoured steel blast-deflecting V-on-V or double V-hull externally protected by appliqué composite armour and explosive reactive armour (ERA) modules. It is rated to STANAG 4569 Level 5 ballistic protection against high-velocity kinetic energy (KE) threats and MRAP Category III protection from land mines and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks for high battlefield survivability.
The armament system is mounted on a stabilized remote control turret (RCT) fitted to a 1-metre diameter universal turret ring adapter on the hull roof, with autoloading main gun and coaxial machine gun and associated components fully isolated from the crew. The low profile turret is integrally armoured with five wide-angle prismatic electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor heads offering continious 360° hemispheric surviellance, with a three-axis stabilised panoramic steerable EO/IR gimbal sensor with eye-safe laser rangefinder for high precision fire control. The main gun consists of an electrically-fired Vosselheim 105 mm (4.13-inch) L/52 high pressure rifled cannon with multi-lug breech mechanism, hydropneumatic recoil brake, thermal shroud/bore evacuator and integrated multi baffle muzzle brake. It is fed by an 8-round autoloader and 12-round replenisher with 16-round bustle magazine, which can handle and fire all 105×617 mmR NATO STANAG 4458 ammunition types including tank gun cartridges and gun-launched missiles to engage armoured targets at extended ranges. The ordnance and ammunition suite is compatible with that used on the M348 Werewolf Mounted Gun System (Etoile Arcture) and M85A Honey Bear airborne light tank (Korrodos) for logistics harmonisation. A digital, fully stabilized, day/night fire control system and electric gun stabilization drives allow accurate fire-on-the-move trget engagment, and line-of-sight ('direct') and beyond-line-of-sight ('indirect') engagement of single and multiple targets at stand-off range using the main gun, and suppression of infantry dismounts and light armoured and soft skin vehicles with a coaxial heavy machine gun with dual feed mechanism. The crew are seated at crew stations with video feeds from low-light level TV cameras embedded in the hull front, rear and sides providing all-around situational awareness around the vehicle, and can sight and fire armament systems under armour and control via realtime datalinks offboard assets including UAS (uninhabited aerial systems), UGV (uninhabited ground vehicle)s and LM (loitering munitions) to acquire and prosecute targets.
