Overview

Nuovoiork (Noo-owe-voy-ork), officially The Duchy of Nuovoiork, is a small, environmentally stunning country in North America, bordered by New York to the north, Pennsylvania to the west, Delaware to the southwest, and Connecticut to the northeast. The nation extends from the southern tip of the Cape May to the northern borderlands of Long Island. Nuovoiork's national capital of Citta Nuovoiork is located on the Hudson River, with the Lower Bay adding geographic protection to the city. Nuovoiork covers 165,25.56 square kilometers, making it one of the smaller nations in North America, just smaller than Eswantini, with a population of roughly 33.1 million.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Nuovoiork is "Nuovoiorker", based off of "New Yorker", as Nuovoiork is an Italianized name of New York.

History

During the 1890's and early 1900's, New Jersey and Long island were experiencing a surge in immigration from Italy. Most Italian settlers and migrants settled Long Island and coastal New Jersey, laying the foundation for the state. When large amounts of Italian immigrants immigrated to New York and New Jersey, the already existing German, English, Irish, and French Americans discriminated against the Italians, calling them criminals and terrorizing the Italian communities in New York and New Jersey.

Due to the mass amount of discrimination in the Italian ghettos, many decided to start protesting or rioting to protest their conditions. As more and more migrants were arrested or killed, the riots and protests only continued. Eventually ethnic tensions broke down in a full scale guerilla war in New York City and parts of New Jersey, lead by young Italian American activist, Daltonio Misiano I.

The Italians won the war in 1905, and went on a state-sponsored repatriation program to expell anyone who had no Italian ancestry out of the nation, with Daltonio Misiano I as the elected President of Nuovoiork by popular vote of Italian immigrants.

Geography

Nuovoiork is a North American nation. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the east, New York to the north, Delaware to the southwest, and Pennsylvania the west. The climate of the northern mountains of Nuovoiork is Humid Continental (DFB).The central and south of the nation is classified as Humid Subtropical. The greatest natural barriers to Nuovoiork are the Piemonte Mountains to the west and the swamplands of the south.

Climate

Nuovoiork's ethnic makeup is difficult to pinpoint, as most Nuovoiorkers have full or partial Italian ancestry, estimated to form 43-71% of the population. A small Afro-Caribbean presence exists, but mainly in the inner cities of Nuovoiork's Cities (2%). Italo-Nuovoiorkers have a relatively unique phenotype, as many have a tan or olive skin tone regardless of region, and are spead out evenly across the core. Phenotype can vary immensely between two individuals, and have a variety of differing ethnic groups, races, and cultures.

In recent years, immigrant communities have popped up around the nation. Puerto Ricans in Manhattan, Pennsylvania Dutch in the northwest, Irish near Pennsylvania, Legio Civium in Porto Maggio, New Yorkers in Hoptacong, Russians and Poles in Perth Amboy, Jews in Sayreville, African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans in inner city Trentino, Unione Contea, Porto Atlantico, Quebecois and French Canadians in Frenchtown, the obscure Italian immigrant communities in Seaside Heights and Little Italy in Manhattan, and Canadians in Wildwood Crest and the south side of Porto Maggio.

Religion

Nuovoiork guarantees freedom of religious expression, with about 26% of the population adhering to Catholicism, mainly in the countryside and in immigrant communities, 27% Protestant, mostly in the southern conteas, and 2% Other (Judaism and Islam), mostly in Citta Nuovoiork's immigrant neighborhoods. The remainder of the nation identifies as Atheist or Agnostic. The southern conteas and interior are historically more religious.

Linguistics

Most Nuovoiorkers in Nuovoiork speak fluent Italian. Following the expulsion of non-Italians from New Jersey, Italian is the sole official language, with English spoken in the back country, though knowledge of Italian is needed to advance in most careers, disenfranchising the English speaking people in the back country. Mandatory Italian language classes are commonplace in the English speaking areas. Nuovoiorkers speak a dialect of Italian reminiscent of Ligurian in the interior of the core, whilst Citta Nuovoiork hosts many regional dialects reminiscent of Sicilian, Neapolitian, Turinian, Venetian, and Friulan, depending on the neighborhood. Over time, it has developed into a Standard Nuovoiork Italian.

Government

Nuovoiork is officially a One Party State, though functions more like an absolute monarchy. The laws of Nuovoiork permit the Duce to rule executively alongside an elected National Assembly. The official head of state and government is the Duce, Daltonio Misiano III, whose family has run the nation since independence, alongside holding considerable amounts of wealth abroad and domestically. The Misiano Family is Nuovoiork's de facto royal family in all but name.

Due to recent legislation granting devolution and proportional representation, Nuovoiork is subdivided into 28 Conteas, or Counties, each led and managed by a democratically elected Il Conte, or Count, with a Sindaco or Mayor elected on the local level. Local and regional leaders are elected in popular elections, with each Contea (county) being represented in the National Assembly.

Nuovoiork has a predominantly tourist-based economy, with the GDP of the nation being about 504 trillion Nuovoiork Lire a year. The Misiano Family is looking to privatize parts of the economy. Gambling, Transportation Technology, Valium mining, nuclear and green energy production are primary sectors of the economy, with local industries including cranberry farming, food processing (tomato canning), communications technology, glass and china production, and miscellaneous agriculture being prominent as well in various communities.

Strengths: Very good quality of life, successful semi-democracy, increasing political freedoms, tourist capital of North America, best healthcare, education, and human development scores. Finest public transportation in the continent.

Weaknesses: Overly dependent on importing building materials, over-dependence on tourism and agriculture for wealth, very high taxation, lacks infrastructure for most industry, extremely noncompetitive, trouble assimilating the English speaking back country.

Culture

Nuovoiork's culture is similar to many Latin cultures, summarized by a strong control of the children by the parents, a deep respect for family and elders, and loyalty to the family is considered by many to be a top priority for many. It is common to have family reunions and familial gatherings at least once or twice a month, with an emphasis on interconnectedness.

While many Nuovoiorkers are secular, the traditions still remain, with society still largely being patriarchal and clannish, particulalry among Italo-Nuovoiorkers. While all ethnicities and cultures are legally equal, Italo-Nuovoiorker culture, values, cuisine, and way of life is being pushed as the unifier of the nation. Marriage is heavily encouraged, and Italo-Nuovoiorker families often have 3 children if moving to other nations. Italo-Nuovoiorker men often migrate to the interior of the southern conteas to settle in farmsteads, taking a local wife with the intention of 'converting' the local ethnicities to the Italo-Nuovoiorker culture.

Secondary aspects of local culture include consumption of plant based foods, colorful local festivals, and a candid, direct approach to things. Many foreigners have mistaken this for Nuovoiorkers being a loud, rude people, when in fact using direct language and assertive gestures are seen as a sign of strength and assertiveness in Nuovoiork. It is common for people to kiss cheeks when meeting, or for people to put arms around each other when speaking privately.

Scandinavian wool sweaters or parkas are a big deal in Nuovoiork, especially during cold weather. Otherwise most citizens wear hiking clothes, track clothing, or simple casual wear. Traditional clothing consists of breeches, corsets, elegant dresses, and powdered wigs, appropriated by colonial English dress.

Food

For food, many Nuovoiorkers spend a good portion on their disposable income on it, as it is a vital aspect of the culture of Nuovoiork. Nuovoiork is a prime Cheese Exporter, with Nuovoiork cheese considered a delicacy to many abroad. Much of Nuovoiork's cuisine is grain-based, due to the absence of pastureland in certain conteas of Nuovoiork. Beef, pork, and chicken is heavily reguated by the government, and has led to a growing number of vegetarian movements.

Because Nuovoiork has a poor supply of livestock and poultry in most conteas, agriculture is largely centered around grains, cranberries, corn, apples, tomatoes, squashes, watermelons, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and beets as well as various nuts and seeds. Instead of olive oil, local industries have since created a large industry around producing vegetable oil, as olives cannot grow in the cold, damp climate. Miscellaneous crops such as tea leaves and cannabis are often grown in large farmsteads in the countryside, often with the aid of a greenhouse. The cannabis industry has since boomed, benefitting both the agricultural sector and tourist sector.

A number of local communities in Nuovoiork pride themselves on home-made, fresh foods, such as hearty meat and vegetable stews, black bread with cranberry sauce, or home style spaghetti with meatballs, which is now Nuovoiork's national dish. Every year, small towns across the nation compete in local and regional festivals to win awards for the best sauce, sometimes jarring it up and selling it for a modest sum to locals or tourists. Tourists in Nuovoiork jokingly complain that there is too much garlic or onion in most sauces.

Infrastructure

Since Nuovoiork is in a very forested part of North America, most of the nation's architecture is being made of wood. Though a growing amount of buildings are being made of stone or concrete to preserve forests. Most of Nuovoiork's infrastructure is built in the early 20th century. Most cities in the nation are compact, pedestrian/bicycle dominated cities with historic stone walls around the smaller villages in the back country, historically used to keep out American soldiers in newly occupied settlements. Sizeable amounts of land in major cities are set aside for urban farming and food co-ops.

For the most part, cars are rare, as tough regulations and banning of cars entirely from most parts of the nation have made cars virtually impossible to find in Nuovoiork. Fortunately, there are very successful private and public transportation systems based in Nuovoiork (mainly with subways). Nuovoiorkers are more healthy than most, with one of the lowest obesity rates worldwide.

Foreign Relations and Military

Nuovoiork takes a partially neutral role in regional and inter regional diplomacy and conflict. Though Nuovoiork has a minuscule military, it does have a good police force all across Nuovoiork as well as 2,000 troops from Legio de Caesar stationed in Citta Nuovoiork and Citta Atlantico, with an additional 1,500 Italian troops stationed across Nuovoiork.

Nuovoiork is a member of the World Assmebly, and the Flagstaff Pact. It's main allies and trading parteners are Legio de Caesar, Haarmony, Yellowstone Valley, Anarcha feminist gynarchy, Infernia, The greater gothic empire, and Ienovo.

Land Disputes with neighbors

Currently, Nuovoiork has several land disputes with Delaware, situated in Salimi Contea. A chunk of Salimi Contea is cut off from the mainland, and is home to a nature reserve. Nuovoiork maintains a small fort near the area, and so far, no violence has been used, as the Pea Patch island nearby carefully watches Nuovoiork. Another dispute with Delaware is the tip of a peninsula on Artificial Island, where Delaware claims it as it's own following secession, and has threatened to bring military forces from Pea Patch island. Nuovoiork recognizes the tip of the peninsula as part of Salimi Contea. Delaware has attempted to build a town or a fort on the tip, but has been threatened by Nuovoiork with military action, as the land is near a nuclear power plant and generating station.

In past years, Nuovoiork had many disputes with Pennsylvania, though has since resolved them in 2014, with each gaining islands east or west of the Delaware River, with a clean border. In general, Nuovoiork's borders are mostly natural, and along the Delaware River, making Nuovoiork a 'mote' nation, contributing to it's seclusion. The border with New York has been carefully marked by stone markers and a deforested zone in between the two countries, with Nuovoiork having checkpoints at every road passing into New York, with armed guards.

The most militarized border is in Bronx County, with a large northern border wall sepaerating the Contea from New York, where the bulk of the border security going to this area. In general, most border crossings are tourists and locals visiting friends or family from upstate.

Most of Nuovoiork's energy needs are met by green or renewable energy sources, though a significant portion of energy is also hydroelectric, fossil fuel driven, or nuclear. As such, many are employed in plants across Nuovoiork helping provide energy for the nation.
