A Brief History of ACCEL

ACCEL is a now historical organization that was a dominant force in NationStates during 2005 - 2006, but continued operations up until early 2008. The Treaty of ACCEL was ratified on June 29, 2005 as a result of the World Capitalist Summit and was a combination of several smaller capitalist / right-wing / libertarian organizations. Plans (and even previous attempts) to create a single major capitalist alliance had been discussed previously, but ACCEL represented the first and only successful attempt. During its prime, ACCEL was the predominant (by a large margin) force on the right/libertarian sphere of the game.

ACCEL was probably best known for advocating National Sovereignty and drafting/authoring/passing United Nations Repeals (Before the WA, NS had the UN until 2008). At least ten repeal resolutions were authored by ACCEL, of which at least six passed. ACCEL was also a vocal opponent to the creation of new restrictions on national sovereignty by the United Nations. ACCEL's anti-UN efforts were lead originally by the Undersecretary of UN Affairs, who reported to the Secretary of World Affairs. Later, the United Nations Division was under the authority of the Secretary for Trade and National Sovereignty. Under both structures, ACCEL had an official arm that was actively organizing votes and efforts to thwart the growth of United Nations power.

ACCEL was also a gameplay alliance that protected right-wing regions from militant left. ACCEL was not officially a "defender" or "raider" organization, but instead attacked its enemies and defended regions that matched their philosophy when possible. ACCEL also participated in some of the largest military operations in NationStates history, including the raid on Federal Commonwealth Society in February of 2006 when the ACCEL/GB&I lead had 109 endorsements but was defeated at update by the Alliance Defense Network who managed to get a native to 136 endorsements for a solid win. Still, it was one of the largest endorsement operations in a user-created region ever! ACCEL also declared war on the Red Liberty Alliance (RLA), a socialist defender organization allied with the Alliance Defence Network. Blackbird, the key leader of the RLA, has said both that the RLA completely ignored the declaration and had almost no interaction with ACCEL, and that the RLA placed high ranking spies within ACCEL. While those statements contradict each other, the actual truth is likely somewhere in the middle.

On the more "defender" side of the spectrum, ACCEL had a high-profile war with DEN, the raider region that continued operations long after the collapse of ACCEL until the 2016 Predator Scandal caused NationStates moderation to destroy the region, its leaders, and permanently prevent regions containing "DEN" to be founded. In 2006, DEN captured and did significant damage to at least two member regions (Ayn Rand and The Malibu Islands).

ACCEL is also known for its anti-forum destruction position. Following an incident of forum destruction (when a foreign spy / traitor in a region with admin status erases most if not all of a forum) by the RLA, ACCEL and The West Pacific signed the COPS Treaty, which attempted to ostracize the perpetrators of forum destruction.

After beginning operations in 2005, and during 2006 ACCEL was a major force in NationStates. During 2007 ACCEL continued operations but began to struggle with activity problems and keeping the Directorate full. Many of the core regions of ACCEL had slid into decline, and through 2007 NationStates as a whole lost 1/3 of the total UN Member Nations (indicating a massive drop in activity on the site as a whole). Another factor that was hurting other powerful regions and organizations at the time was the change in the raid/defense game known as "regional influence." Prior to 2006, regions did not have influence and delegates of founderless regions could eject and ban members without limit (at least by the game, instead NationStates moderation created limits and rules about clearing regions). For players that were accustomed to pre-Influence raiding and defending, the adjustment was very difficult and many veteran players of raid/defense intentionally left or fell inactive. For various reasons, ACCEL continued its decline throughout all of 2007. By January 2008 the leadership of ACCEL were notifying member regions that talks were underway to amend the treaty to cease operations and disband the leadership, but continue the agreement as a cooperative/non-aggression pact between the regions.
