Decadence

Source: Detail of For Saint Dorothea’s Day, 1899, by Herbert James Draper (1863-1920)
" 'You couldn't find a nation more decadent,' they told me. So I ventured into The White Woods to find Elysiom for myself, and look upon the luxuries of their people.

I found it, a Shangri-La buried in lush rain forest. The nation's landscape is an artists' vision. There are vineyards and blue lagoons, meadows full of wildflowers, and animals of peculiar but wonderful shape and colour. There are birds with bright feathers and cheerful song, red deer with intriguing dappling on the flank, and yellow, tree-climbing rodents with full tails and large, inquisitive eyes. The flowers are perfumed with pleasant aroma, more so than the cities themselves; yes! The cities and townships of Elysiom, I must recount this properly to you, dear reader.

Incense hangs in brass burners extended upon long and attractive wands across the ceilings of their Halls. Rooms are wide and open, with vaulted ceilings supported on tall alabaster and marble columns. When one travels out of the cities and further into the forests or onto naked, white beaches, one might find there are homes built of fine woods under excellent care and craft. And what elegant creatures, these Elysiomians! The streets are decorated with painted statues of mythical heroes and there are large artistic fountains in the center of mosaic-tiled public plazas.

There is music, of harmonizing and mood-lifting sound, painted works of good taste and composition, and the people are clever as well as kind-hearted. I have heard it so, from many locals, that it is written into formal history, under the very Charter that guides their government, that Elysiomians are descendants of fairy beings that once populated the woods before humans came. It's said their ancient fairy lineage is what grants them their boons of talented artists. A superstitious and spiritual folk, perhaps, but it does them good service. They are affable, though on the rare occasion I have met a crafty conman of an Elysiomian. With silver tongued charm and Elysiomian good looks I have lost my purse and more to a good crook. I have read old books about fairy spies that came from the deep woods, able to worm their way into many a noble's bed or politician's private office.

Not to be prejudiced. Otherwise, there seems nothing non-human about the Elysiom people at all, though they are comfortable with the colloquialism that they are the fairy people.

They enjoy good wine and good food, as well. Ah yes, the wine! I must write a detailed and reviewed list of my favourites. Strange, as they are a poor folk, they enjoy many resources that make them comfortable and dare I say; lazy. Yes, it is hard to find an Elysiomian that is willing to do a good day's hard labour. It is barrier-ed well, bordered by beaches and dense wood. They have not seen much strife, sickness or war, though in the History books it is mentioned that their true fairy Homeland of Sai Ahn was raided and burned, and it is now in Elysiom where they live in peace. Elysiom, I have heard, is a shadow of the sparkle and luxury that was Sai Ahn, though I find it hard to imagine such a thing. With each elegant crystalline glass that I hold between my fingers and with every silken sheet I lay against at night, I find it difficult to believe that there is any place like Elysiom at all.

Yes, to come to a summarized conclusion: Elysiom is a decadent society with decadent persons, in love with beauty and a care free way of life."
