Q&A with Liberal Party Candidate, Kaena Arorah

AHSCA's special election continues on, full steam ahead with the candidates presenting their platforms and working hard to gain the needed votes to sway the election in their favor. The National Liberal Party is seeking to regain it's majority hold it lost in the election of 2014 and putting forward their veteran candidate current minority leader and minority speaker, Kanea Arorah. Madam Arorah has been in the AHSCA political scene since the days of the formation of AHSCA's modern government, starting off by leading a the fellowship for girls who came out evolving into one of the largest political parties. While the party has seen some changes, it still remains apart of AHSCA's political structure today. We sat down with Madam Arorah to see what her hopes are for this run.

Q: You've been serving in politics for a very long time, what had motivated you to serve as long as you have?

A: It's a desire to continue to make a positive impact on my community and my home of the islands and Corona. My parents always raised me to be someone who would make a difference and do important things as a person.

Q: After this election, will you continue to serve or retire?

A: I intend to serve out the rest of my term but I won't be running again.

Q: Can you tell us about your platform?

A: The major platform that I run on and continue to promise my constituents is the education issue. There is a lot of back and forth about should AHSCA demand it, should it stay optional, I'm of the mindset it should remain optional. Parents, not the government should decide how their children are raised and what values they give. Too much education is becoming a problem in the industrialized world, too many people too few jobs and millions are left in crippling debt. Many families rely on each other to support, farming, fishing, small shops, that's why it's important for them to decide if having a child in school for up to eight hours is really worth it.

Second major issue is very similar to Ms. Indou's platform about sea travel, I personally would like to see interstate transport for private and cargo use under our national government to reduce the costs of island-to-island transport. That being said international transportation is fine in the private sector, the revenue from tourists and industry that we import goods from, creates good business for sailors.

Finally there's the matter of defense spending, many are saying I'm trying to gut it, I'm not, I want a healthy well funded defense force but recently I feel we've been putting too much into it. We're a small nation and we have our own ways of doing stuff which gets bigger nations with itchy trigger fingers just pining to exploit us. Today we invest in a few more jets, tomorrow Maxtopia claims we're building weapons of mass destruction. Of course we need to protect ourselves but we also don't need to be the region's policeman.

Q: One of your opponents, Pacifica feels different about the need of defense spending --

A: I don't have interest in talking the differences in our platforms, we're all running and you'll get your chance to talk to her.

Q: When people say the NLP is a relic and needs to change what do you say?

A: I say the NLP represents the most traditional values of many islanders. We stand by our records for pro-LGBT rights, strong environmental record, fair and even tax code that rewards all citizens and not just a top section of ultra elite. It's why we had the majority the first time but right now there's a small change in attitude but we see it as nothing more than a passing phase.

Q: There's an increasing push towards more globalization and modernization of the country, how will the NLP face that challenge?

A: Remind everybody of the foolish trust we placed which resulted in The War. The good thing to come out of the war was we did come together as different islands to form a union and now we're strong because of it. AHSCA should remain it's own nation, we can become more self-sustaining without the dependence on many countries. But of course that's not to discredit those who have helped us so much, we appreciate our friends in Mokastana and Lamoni and I hope that one day we'll be able to repay the kindness they've shown to us.

The election runs through November 02 and the polls remain open for voting. Tell us what you think about Ms. Arorah or any other candidate by visiting the Election center and stay tuned.
