Olympian Weekly News 2/18

OLYMPIA WEEKLY NEWS, WEEK 2 / 2018
CO-SPONSORED BY THE OLYMPIA CHRONICLES

The second week of January has had lots of debates and discussions - but also eagerly awaited action in the RP section of Olympia. We're back again with the most significant news of the week!

WORLD RP STARTED

Under the lead of Interior Secretary Tristan Barbett, Olympia has rediscovered its RP (Roleplay) ambitions. The aim of the new RP is to let players design their ideal nation on our world map and to engage in the fast and relentless diplomacy - or even war - of our modern era. Eight nations registered already, but several interesting locations remain for you to take, such as Japan, China, Australia, South Africa and the United States. You can find signups to the RP on our regional forums.

RECRUITMENT EFFORTS SHOW SUCCESS

The President announced results of the second week of the "5 Minutes A Day"-Program on Saturday. 114 Telegrams were sent out manually. Ranked first in the list of recruiters is Nosma Washington, who sent out 41 recruitment TGs in 10 minutes, followed by Kirb with 35 recruitment TGs in 10 minutes and finally President Seal himself with 26 in 5 minutes. Next to bonus payments of Olympicoins for every recruitment TG, at the end of the month the one with the most sent out recruitment TGs will also receive the Grand Medal of Recruitment.

The "5 Minutes A Day"-Program was created by the Department of Immigration under its Secretary Walter Jones to counter the harsh decline in member nations. Olympia went from more than 100 during the time of Pepe's Presidency to around 70 in recent months. President Seal has therefore made recruitment and player integration key issues of his new Presidential term - and it's showing. Olympia is currently nearing 100 member nations again. It's reasonable to assume that the new policy will ensure a better continuity between different governments.

GOVERNMENT POSITIONS FILLED

Government offices are filled left and right as both Chambers of Olympia's Legislative assemble again. House Speaker Kirb nominated Interior Secretary Tristan Barbett to be his Sergeant of Arms, and the nominee won unanimous consent. In the Senate, United Vietussia won the confirmation vote of his colleagues to become Senate President, and he swiftly named fellow contestant Vlaska to be President Pro Tempore. Lastly Nosma Washington was named as new Delegate to AID, the interregional organization Olympia founded.

DEBATE WEEK LEADS TO FIRST IMPULSES

Olympias first debate week ends with some success as players identify faults of the current system and start to name ideas on how to fix it. Most notably many find that there isn't really anything to do with Olympicoins, the regional currency. Some suggested that benefits in RP could be bought with them, or that you should need to pay a certain amount of Olympicoins to unlock certain forum features. Others added that there already would be ways to use Olympicoins, e.g. by hiring an Olympian business or by paying the fees of the Olympian University, but those features aren't active enough yet.

The next debate will start Monday the 15th and discuss the very nature of our region. What makes us special? Are we special? Do we need to be?

UNEMPLOYMENT RATES

On Thursday the Olympian Broadcasting Corporation brought us shocking news in form of the official unemployment rates. After a record-low 5% in August, rates have continuously risen to now 12.3%. The increase between November and December is also the biggest single-month increase recorded in Olympian history yet. As thousands of Olympians remain without a job, the Prime Minister and House of Representatives are called on to bring an end to this situation. So far, the calls have been left unanswered.

(Note: This is an RP storyline to also be played out on the forums)
