Dawn : A Dream of Greatness

A Dream of Greatness

Zenstrum
Writer's Note

I have been part of Dawn since the last week of September, however, the region is much older than the period I’ve been part of the region. Hence, it may be noted that collections of that period is from interactions and RMB messages. Hence, it is highly likely that it is biased, or not complete, skipping over some aspects, and so forth. It is a request that if you are aware of such inconsistencies, do let me know so that I can modify it.

At the same time, I’ve tried to keep this as neutral and unbiased as possible, however, some tinges of bias may be found here and there. I apologize for the same, for we are all humans. I’ve tried to make this as appropriate and just recollections as possible. Again, feel free to criticize and submit your opinions to me. I shall listen to them all and continue making the changes.

“As a region, Dawn has a long future ahead, hence this is in no way the end.
The tale has only begun.”

It's funny how I imagined that line merely weeks before Dawn “died”. The tale of a man's, no, a region's dream of greatness, and it's failure. The tale of Dawn starts in mid year of 2017.

Founding

Before the founding of the region, previously, the nations of Ex patria (New Ex Patria), who would later become the Emperor of Dawn, and Lanceshir, who would later become the longest running Prime Minister of the region, were part of the region of The Democratic Commonwealth (also referred to as TDC). The two nations were an integral part of TDC, which albeit a relatively large and an active region, had many ambitious members who sought to cripple the system and monopolise power for themselves. While the region was home to members who later would go on to create Dawn, however, a series of events changed that.

Landinium's Parenthilus

The system of Parties was an integral part of the democratic system of TDC, and is the system which is used for electoral politics. Many alongside Ex Patria supported and endorsed a party which went by the name of Lions Party with Landinium as the leader. Emerging as a popular leader, Landinium contested in the elections and was elected as the – of the region. That was the start.

Landinium had won and now wielded great power. However, it was the power that led to his downfall. Becoming corrupt with power, he sought more and hence fell victim to what is referred to as the Parenthilus syndrome. And so, disagreements arose within his own party. There were a group of people who did not agree with his methods and sought a change, a revolution. However, Landinium ruled with an iron fist, endangering the democracy of the region. As a result the people decided to form a faction and secede.

Hence, this faction, made up of people like – ultimately formed the region of Dawn, and so began the tale of a new region.

A New Beginning

Escaping from tyranny, the new faction created the region named Dawn, and formed the founder’s panel. The panel initially consisted of – but later also included members like --. Initially, with the panel as the primary ruling body, the region was declared as a Republic, and so, with a joined conviction of developing, the founder’s panel administered the region. However, the region had its first challenge within a month of its inception.

Although initially, the members met the creation of the region with much excitement, yet, as time passed, the region was plagued with inactivity. As a result, some of the members defected back to TDC, and no one could imagine the region sustaining for long. Yet some did stay, and chose to hope that the region would survive. Yet, the founder’s panel worked hard at consolidating the position of the region.

Gillardium's Parenthilus, an omen of Dawn's future troubles

Hence, at dusk, the region Dawn was created.

Like many regions, the first issue that plagued Dawn was inactivity. However, eventually, the inactivity meant that many of the founders on the said panel became inactive. Hence, soon, it was felt that the panel was becoming obsolete and hence, there wasn’t any need to continue working with the panel as the legislative body. Hence, it was disbanded.

Initially, the region was declared as a republic, and overall maintained distance from TDC. As a republic, each of the major decisions were take through referendums, such as the foreign policy of the region in regards to TDC and so forth. Hence, in a similar fashion, elections were held for various positions. As for the government, as soon as the region was established, a provisional government was created, with Ex Patria as the chairman, Marrum graecia as the Director of internal affairs, Flowerboy for foreign affairs, United France for military and Catakastan became the Supreme Justice. And hence, they formed the provisional government.

Hence with a new system in place and a period of peace and stability, the region kicked off with RPs, which were predominantly one liners and short paragraphs. However, on the political front, there was much activity. There was intense competition between Gillardium, a relatively new nation to the region, and Albanials, comparatively older but not as much experienced nation, both contested for the position of Director of Defence. However, in the end, Albanials emerged victorious. It is worth noting that Gillardium, who was recruited from Diamond Citadel, eventually revealed his ambitious motives to seize powers and hence was tried and executed.

Similarly, following another elections, in which WA nations participated, following the campaigning and the ideals of the nation, ultimately, Fairstone was elected as the WA delegate of the region, and hence, another position was filled. Fairstone since then remained as the WA delegate until the last week of 2017.

Dawn was made into an empire from a republic following a referendum, with Ex Patria as the emperor, who was earlier elected as the chairman of the founders panel, and so, the region had carved a new path for itself.

Early Days

Even as an empire, although power was centralised, all major positions were filled through democratic means. Elections were held for all major positions, which meant that the region had long committed itself to democratic ideals and beliefs. Meanwhile, many had long since began working on a constitution for the region, which garnered much attention.

Hence, immediately as the region became an empire, an elections were held for the post of Foreign Affairs, since Flowerboy, the previous director, had become too ambitious and hence sought to centralise power to himself and hence when he failed moved to TDC. The elections for the post was held in which Catakastan emerged victorious.

Meanwhile, in around the same time, in a bid to increase activity and to garner attention to the region, Kofutan organised the NFL for Dawn. Although it did garner much attention and excitement initially, eventually, the region again succumbed to inactivity.

Soon after, a new member joined the region, by the name of Keyneia, who was also known as Lanceshir, formerly the Vice President of TDC, joined Dawn and ran for Director General, which is essentially the leader of the government, with the emperor as the head of the state. This garnered much attention.

Capitalising on the hatred towards TDC, some ran against Keyneia, calling him as a spy and a manipulator and hence sought to consolidate their own position. Similarly, campaigning kicked off for many other much coveted spots in the government as many others campaigned for the post of Defence, Interior, and Foreign Affairs, among many others.

Dawnian Parliamentarism

Emperor Ex Patria

However, soon after, on the 1st of September, a much more important event took place which boosted the activity in the region. A new constitution was enacted, and implemented. This meant that the system would be a bicameral system and hence elections for the parliament commenced. And, parties were introduced. Hence, there was much excitement and activity in the region.

Hence, with the excitement for the first ever general elections, the director’s panel was dissolved, and hence, Dawn looked with much anticipation to a new elections, and a new future.

First General Election

Hence, with intense campaigning underway, and much excitement, many announced their intention to contest in the elections and become part of the new parliament. And hence, ultimately, the elections were held.

As the first elections, it generated much excitement and saw a turnout of over 15. This is high considering the inactivity that had plagued the region. The next day, the election results were tallied and announced.

As the largest party, Keyneia was declared as the first Prime Minister of Dawn, and apart from him, others who were elected include Kofutan, Albanials and INYS, in a close contest. Fairstone and United France occupied the House of Regents, and hence, the parliament was complete. At around the same time, Keyneia changed his name to Lanceshir, which is how he is commonly known as today as well.

Due to inactivity, Crato was appointed to the HoR, replacing United France, and similarly, a by elections was called to replace INYS, which was another intensely contested event. Federalist Union, of the Constitution party, emerged victorious.

The cabinet hence formed consisted of Lanceshir, as the Prime Minister, Albanials, as the Minister of Interior, Fairstone, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Kofutan as the Minister of Roleplay. While others remained, Kofutan gave up his position as the minister to Crato, who later gave it up to Tillyburg, who was henceforth also the cartographer of the region. It may be noted that initially, Ex Patria himself was the cartographer.

It was around this time that two ambitious projects were in development, the Oscars, which garnered short lived interests, and Olympics. However, unfortunately, both of the events failed to be enacted and become a success, and hence, failed to generate more activity. However, the period witnessed rapid growth as the region was changing.

It may be noted that it was around this time that long roleplay posts began to dominate RP in the region, with the likes of Lanceshir, Libero, and Daemnal, among many others who worked long and hard on long RP posts, which eventually revolutionised RP in the region, which since then developed a unique form of RP.

Hence, it was felt that the current small parliament was highly unrepresentative of the current sudden influx of regions and hence there was a need for a new general elections. With a new system in place, which had three components, pro-government, crossbench and opposition. The new system was quite simple really.

And so, another elections were held and hence the parliament was formed.

Dawn and the Outside World

Ever since Dawn had been established, it has never been a stranger to diplomacy, entering into diplomatic relations with various people. Although, the nature of Dawn’s foreign policy was different than its current policies.

As Dawn started out, it started with collecting colonies. As the number of colonies increased, the region became more well known and dominant in the Interregional platforms and forums which paved way for many more diplomatic relations. The nature of Dawn’s relation with the Interregional players can be understood from two scenarios.

Diamond Citadel

The first is of recruiting from the Diamond Citadel. Fairstone, the WA delegate of the region for the initial almost half a year, was one of the members of the Diamond Citadel who was recruited by the emperor. Another member, who albeit proved to be a threat to the region, nonetheless was an important player, member of the Regent of the Diamond Citadel, was Gillardium. Hence, Ex Patria, by recruiting such people, proved his calibre as a master negotiator for he managed to convince members of the Diamond Citadel who were vital players in interregional politics to join Dawn.

The second is of the relationship with the former Emperor of UCR, Langor. Langor's first interaction with the region was when TDC awarded UCR for being good partners, since the two were already had embassies with each other, which invited him to go and see what the region was like. It was later learned that the TDC gave such awards to many regions, even those of which they had no knowledge about. He, much to his disappointment, realised the region was plagued by its failed party politics, and so, sought to distance himself from the region. That was when he first met Ex Patria.

The next interaction was when the two met in Diamond Citadel. From there on, the two stayed in touch, often helping each other out, and gradually building a firm friendship that was not only restricted to the game itself. UCR built an embassy with Dawn, which was the first Embassy of the region. And since then, the two regions were involved in many bilateral meets and relations. Dawn became a signatory to Yukki and accepted Conventism which was an ideology from the UCR and so, further consolidated Dawn’s friendship with the UCR.

As allies, the two regions were involved in many joint ventures. Conquering Avlonia was one of them. The Ruling Senatorial Republic of Avlonia was a region which sought to attack Dawn for one of its members, Marrum Graecia, who was granted asylum in Dawn once, had chosen to go against the region due to some differences with the Emperor. The conquest, carried out jointly by the UCR and Dawn, was a success as the region fell to their control despite initial support from several regions which despised the two regions.

Similarly, much later, the Yukki conducted many joint ventures such as conquering New Dawn, a region created by one of the nations which defected from Dawn following a crisis and sought to endanger the region’s peace and stability. And so, in Yukki, Dawn found irreplaceable allies who would continue to help each other out.

Party System

In a bid to increase activity, the once repealed party system was brought back. This did bring the much anticipated activity to the region as various people sought to establish a party of their own and gain popularity. And so, one by one, parties emerged in Dawn.

The first party was the Dawn Conventist Party (DCP), which was set up by the emperor, Ex Patria himself, alongside many of his loyalists like the Prime Minister Lanceshir, among many others, which included veteran players like – as well as newer players. Since the moment it was established, the party was the largest and the most influential party, having most of its members as part of the parliament.

The party that followed was the Progressive Dawn Party (PRO), which was set up by United Clans of Somalia, alongside many others who shared his ideologies and beliefs. The party was relatively small yet was influential as the largest opposition in the parliament, at the time of its inception. However, due to its limited influence and interactions, the party didn’t grow as much as others.

Dawnian Conventist Party flag

The next party, Dawn’s Democratic Liberals Party (DDLP), was set up by Verdantia, who advocated a liberal approach and was quick in amassing members as it’s growth was threatening to other key players in the field. Another party, among many others, which played a significant role was Union of Globalists and Socialists set up by Dukna.

The first test of the system came in the wake of a spot left over by an MP who resigned. Albanials resigned in the wake of his displeasure with his position as well as certain other commitments. As a result, a by elections was announced. In the same, various candidates stood for the much coveted spot, among which were Verdantia, Van demeins land, and Zenstrum who sought a chance at the seat. They each represented their respective parties, ie DDLP, UGS, and PRO.

However, as the candidates were set to the campaigning period, a new player entered the field. This was the time when Langor, already a well respected and a reputed player from UCR, achieved citizenship and decided to contest on behalf of the DCP. And so, a fierce contesting period kicked off in which each candidate gave their all.

Yet, it was clear that Langor would win, for he was part of the largest and the most well established party. Hence, in a bid to combat his dominance, the candidates of the three parties joined together under the banner of Regional Alliance of the Left (RAL). And so, the elections kicked of as the parties eagerly awaited the results.

In the end, Langor ended up emerging victorious with Van Demeins Land coming awfully close, as the RAL pooled in their votes for him. Nonetheless, RAL was defeated and so, Langor took the seat. However, that was not the end. Following that elections, INYS was banjected following misbehaving and misconduct. Hence, another by elections was to be held. However, this time, the emperor declared a general elections shall be held. And so, the first General Elections with the parties was held.

General Election and Crisis

The first General Elections was the first test of the party system as a whole, as every party sought to consolidate their position and grow and dominate in electoral politics. Also, the elections saw major changes in the party system too. Van Demeins Land, who had stood as the candidate of – joined PRO and contested as their candidate. Similarly, around the same time, the other parties too witnessed momentous growth, with DDLP gaining popularity among the newer players, while DCP consolidating it’s position as the nationalist party with several veterans as it’s premier members, and being the largest and the most active party, was a favourite.

And so, as the campaigning commenced, so did opinion polls. However, there arose the difficulties and the greatest competitions. The initial few opinion polls, which were held way before the elections, showed a clear victory for DCP. However, as time passed, with intense campaigning, while the polls still showed a victory for DCP, the margin was much smaller. The DDLP had gained a lot of ground in such small time period, and so, it seemed clear that while DCP might form the majority, DDLP will be a potential threat to their dominance.

Dukna

However, a different approach was being pursued by DDLP. RAL, an alliance created to combat the dominance of DCP had grown to include all the parties apart from DCP. Hence, the elections became DCP and non DCP for a while, as negotiations kicked off in the RAL, which was hosted by PRO. However, it may be noted that so far RAL had been just an alliance, than a faction. However, in the wake of losing the opinion polls, things took a turn for the worst.

Sensing that DDLP might not form the government, within the RAL, Verdantia, along with some loyalists, proposed to secede from Dawn and form their own region, in a bid to retain power, to become the Prime Minister of the Region, and hence began discussions to secede and go on a different path, which came to the attention of the Emperor.

Hence, the plans were pushed forward, when they were leaked, as RAL members decided to secede and so left the region of Dawn. This was followed by emergency being declared by the Emperor, who feared such an event would further tear the region apart. Which was, quite ironically, further pushed by the declaration of emergency, as a few nations sought to secede in the wake of authoritative rule. This created chaos in the region. However, lack of popular support meant that such a chaotic move was not long lasting.

On one end, in order to restore order, the emperor, and a couple of loyalists, sought to modify the constitution and restore peace and stability, meanwhile, on the other end, some residents were split between joining the secessionists, or stay in what was turning into an authoritative system. However, most felt opposed to the party system, and themselves saw authoritative system as a necessity. And so, the region was in chaos, with the emperor on the edge, and people leaving or threatening to, and hence, there was uncertainty.

In such a scenario, the emperor believed removing the Party system would only breed more dissent and chaos. Hence, he chose to negotiate and hence, peace returned when he lifted the ban on the secessionists, and hence, the nations which seceded returned, and hence, peace returned.

Another important feature of this time was the start of the Olympics and a Writing Contest. This was done in order to involve the citizens more in activities which would be constructive and comparatively more casual. At the same time, to cultivate RP in the region. Both the events were well received as they garnered quite a lot of support. However, that was not the end. Another danger awaited Dawn.

A Short-Lived Peace

And so, an elections were called once there was peace in the region, with Parties permitted. Another important development was the establishment of People’s Conventist Alliance for a New Dawn (PCAND), a party which performed similar to an election commission, which approved other parties and candidates was set up, and commissioners were nominated. Hence, the elections commenced.

With 9 seats open, going through two rounds, the elections garnered a lot of attention and excitement as candidates gave their all, heavily campaigning, and hence ultimately, the nine MPs were elected, and the HoR was assembled, and so, the parliament was formed, and hence, it seemed peace was here.

The parliament was quite active with the MPs contributing a lot, with the initial month itself seeing a lot of vital legislations being passed. While the parliament was active and quite productive, within the parliament was a malice that was growing. Among many others, a controversial MP in the parliament was Dukna.

Dukna during his trial

Dukna, who as the head of UGS had already caused a lot of stir, took controversial stances. This began with him proposing various bills which sought to encroach on Imperial authority of the Emperor. He did so by proposing various legislations which would give powers to the governor of a colony, for he was one himself, and more powers to the WA delegate, for he wished to be one, and so on. While such bills managed to pass the lower house, the House of Regents rejected many of these bills, which were seen as unconstitutional. His ambition led to him being at odds with a lot of officials.

This ambition took various forms. He sought to establish the Politeia Party in Dawn, which went against the ideals of Conventism, and hence was banned. Gradually, as dissent against him grew, he eventually snapped.
Following increasing dissent, he chose to slander the name of the Emperor and questioned his authority and legitimacy. Furthermore, he raised voice against few other officials as well, and claimed the Emperor was unfit to rule the region. As a result of his harmful and hateful comments, and violation of various rules, he was banjected immediately. However, the problem did not end there.

Lanceshir

Despite his banjection, he continued to influence the region from outside, allying himself with regions which despise Dawn, and its allies, and planted seditious thoughts in the minds of the citizens. More importantly, a few people chose this time as the time to attack back. Some nations from TDC raided the region and argued that the Emperor was unfit to rule and hence further attacked the already weakened Emperor.

In view of the stress the region had already done, and considering the recent accusations and slandering that he had to withstand, Ex Patria declared his intention to abdicate, and hence, briefly left the region.

This threw the citizens into a state of confusion, as the region became flooded with more insurgents, and nations from rival regions. Hence, a brief authoritarian rule was imposed, to keep a check on the inflow of users, and hence, situation briefly stabilised. The Emperor came back and explained his plans to reform the system of the region, which, as envisioned, would be a decentralised system with the Emperor as a symbolic head of the region, with high democratic participation by the people, and an extensive constitution.

And hence the reforms were underway. Dawn was changing.

Reforms and a New Order

Following the events, it was clear that the system needed drastic change in order to continue functioning. More importantly, it was in the general consensus that the system in place was far too moderate and could not function for a long term, and hence, for the region to be sustained for a long period, a much comprehensive and detailed system must be in place. And hence, in the wake of such new realisations, the Emperor declared his intention to initiate reforms in the region. This started with formulation of a new constitution.

A convention was called. A group of nations from Dawn who were involved in the developmental process of the region as a whole so far, and represented different ideologies and interests that existed within Dawn. Made of ten members, the constitutional convention included – who all convened and discussed and debated various clauses as the constitution was built step by step by the Emperor, and key contributions from the members of the convention.

Eventually, to make it more representative and transparent, the convention was called off and the formulation of the constitution was taken up to the parliament, and hence the constitution was formed, which took over a fortnight.

Amidst the reforms, in order to fill in the gaps left by The migres, who had become inactive, and Dukna, who was banned, a by-elections was called, in which Boston sanctuary and Verdantia won and hence became MPs.

Kazabaltica

The new constitution was completed and was in place on 16th of December, 2017, which was hailed as a historic day. However, the work was not done. The constitution had various institutions that were not in place and had abolished a lot of institutions which were in place. And hence, the following week saw radical changes in the region.

The changes began with the abolishing of the House of Regents. The constitution made the parliament a unicameral legislative body. And hence, the former Regents stepped down, and hence, that was the start of the reforms that the region would be engaged in for the coming week.

Next, for the previous crisis had seen two MPs banned, there was one more spot open in the parliament. Hence there was a need for another by-elections. Hence, this was started by appointment of commissioners to the PCA. Hence, including the Sovereign ruler, the three commissioners of the PCA were Ex Patria, Langor and Zenstrum. Following the appointment of the commissioners, guidelines for the same were formulated and henceforth placed, which meant that parties were the primary political entity of the region. Hence, new parties emerged.

Meanwhile, there were bodies that were to be placed in the upper echelon of administration as well, which included the Imperial Court, among many others. Hence, this was started with nomination of citizens for the highly revered and a key role. Hence, the Imperial court was formed, which consisted of Lanceshir, Van Demeins Land, Zenstrum, Libero, and Langor who was appointed as the Bearer of Keys, who alongside the emperor himself had access to the founder nation and had the honorific title 'Eternal Protector of the Empire’, and the Emperor, Ex Patria. And hence the Imperial Court was in place too.

Meanwhile, another important feature, was that ministries were in place. This meant that, as part of the decentralisation reforms, there were three ministries, Ministry of Interior, Foreign Affairs and Roleplay, headed by their respective ministers, with deputies, secretaries and members. Hence the entire region was all the more involved in all the processes of development. Hence, for atleast that period, the peace was accompanied by stability and activity. Hence, there was prosperity.

In order to test the system, as well as to fill in the gap left by the banned MPs, a by-election was held. The elections did not generate much excitement, for it was much smaller in magnitude, and the campaigning for the same was weak. Nonetheless, two candidates took part in it, and Haiti was elected as an MP. And hence, the Imperial Party of Dawn managed to secure a seat in the parliament.

While changes were underway, and institutions being placed, another vital institution that wasn’t in place was the Court of Justice. However, due to certain restrictions, a group of amendments were made to the constitution, which allowed citizens to hold multiple roles and permitted Imperial Court members to be part of the Court of Justice. With that, the Court of Justice was formed, with – as part of it.

Hence, as the reforms were underway, with radical changes in place, and still much bigger institutions being set up, Dawn was lively. In the light of the recent changes, a General Elections was scheduled for 13th January 2018. And hence, a bright future awaited Dawn.

An important feature of that took place around this time was the abdication of Langor. Langor was one of the founders of UCR and the Emperor of the Conventium. However, following certain personal reasons, he chose to abdicate. And so, the crown fell to the next in line who was Novskya, who chose not to be the Emperor, and so, Ex Patria, under that nation of Siege i, became the Emperor of UCR, and was the Emperor of Dawn already, hence making him a vital player in the international arena; the unofficial title attributed to him by Langor was the 'Emperor of the Virtuous World'

Conventian refugees fleeing from the December Insurgency

However, this transition was not completely peaceful. A group of dissenters rose up which led to a short-lived coup. The situation however was resolved on the same day, however, it saw the shifting of the crown for a short while. However ultimately, Ex Patria was crowned the emperor, and Langor was the heir to the throne.

Another important event took place during the last week of December. Following discussions and deliberations, a plebiscite for whether Dawn should move out of Yukki or not was announced for 30th December. The event was vital and generated a lot of attention to the issue as advocates of leave and stay both campaigned and debated extensively. Hence, against this backdrop, ultimately, the plebiscite was held on 30th.

Inspite of intense campaigning from the other side, ultimately, the people of Dawn chose to remain in the Yukki meta-region, and hence, as the last activity of the year, the year of 2017 drew to a close, and the citizens of Dawn envisioned an era of peace and prosperity as the new year began. Negotiations commenced for a new treaty, known as the Lancaster Agreement, which was meant to replace Yukki and establish a federation between Dawn and the UCR under the Emperor of the Virtuous World.

Culture and Dawn

Dawn has always had attempted various novel ideas in a bid to increase activity and perhaps further distinguish itself as a unique region. This took various forms even from the start itself. While major plans such as NFL and Olympics and the idealistic Oscars all failed, however, there were plans for a regional newspaper, which however did not reach the surface. However, much later, the region had, along with the influx of nations, created a distinct culture for itself.

As the region continues to grow, a need was felt to develop a distinct language of its own. This was an endeavour undertaken by the United Clans of Somalia, who attempted to gather words from the millions of language all over the globe to assemble an arsenal of the very best, and unique language, that would be usable by the citizens of Dawn. Albeit the language is still in development, the current arsenal is impressive, as the language is often used by the citizens every now and then.

Dawn having witnessed major upheavals and instability due to its excessive democratic policies have since taken a step back, making the system slightly more authoritarian. As an authoritative system, a large range of powers are rested with the Emperor of Dawn, which makes the Royal house an important element of Dawn. The House of Aurorum is the name given to the house of royals. The house is headed by the emperor of Dawn, Ex Patria, and is the palace wherein the princes and the nobles reside alongside the emperor.

The Royalty is a core part of Dawn, exhibiting everything that is known and loved about the region as a whole. The emperor is always an active participant in the regional affairs, and generally benevolent and democratic, which makes him much beloved by the citizens. The Royals have witnessed a growth in the past months with several new and old members becoming part of this growing traditions.

Dawn’s respect to the royals is a testament to the regions commitment to its traditions and rich customs, and at the same time strive for progress and growth, both side by side.
The region of Dawn is home to a diverse group of nations. These nations occupy different regions in the world and are vastly different in their views of the world and opinions on several issues. Hence, it is justly said that Dawn is greatly diverse.

And just as the traditions and the nations are diverse, the region is home to some ideologies as well. The prominent ones of them are Conventism and Politeia.

Conventism is an ideology that has traveled from the large region of the Union of Confederate Regions (UCR), a close ally of Dawn. And so, the ideology has followed the region since it’s inception, further propagated by Langor. The ideology is one of the most popular ideologies of the region, which has been recognised by the state as well.

Politeia is relatively a very new ideology that was born at the heart of the region. Created by the citizens of Dawn, Zenstrum, the ideology can vaguely be said to be a variation of democracy. In comparison, Politeia deals with more abstract issues and the question of morality. As an ideology, it is still very much in its infancy stage, but has been gaining recognition.

Creation of an ideology within the region, merely months after its inception, is a testament to the cast potential that lies in the region. A vast reserve of untapped potential which will surely unveil as time passes.

While politically the region has witnessed several turmoils, and is slightly authoritarian, the region’s commitment to democratic ideals is enshrined in its commitment to a regional news network. Led by Zenstrum, with valuable contributions from his vast and capable writers, the Dawn Gazette is a shining example of the potential that lies in the region.

Dawnian journalism

The Gazette is updated with articles from every nation in Dawn, and so is home to several diverse groups of views and ideas. The news network is independent and unrestricted. This makes it as a platform for the citizens to speak their mind. Such platforms make the region much more unique and democratic, at least in this area.

The Gazette has several columns which are regularly updated with articles, which makes it as a one place destination for the recent happenings in the region of Dawn.

The dream for a regional newspaper was visualised and turned into reality by the efforts of the emperor who worked long and hard at making this a reality, with several failed experiments. This goes to show how benevolent the emperor is, and how democratic ideals is core to Dawn.

Following the political turmoil in the region, some citizens of the region suggested organising events in order to divert the attention of the citizens from politics to other areas. Against this backdrop, two new events were suggested and have since been successfully initiated and well received.

One of the events was the short story or poem writing contest organised by the Gazette. The event aimed to cultivate the habit of roleplaying in the region which is a vibrant community, and has since been well received. The contest is to be a monthly event, and is a pillar of the rich culture that the Dawn holds dear.

The second event, organised by Van Demeins Land, who had been envisioning the same for a long time, is the Olympics. The Olympics was initially well received with several participants in the first edition. The Olympics is a wonderful and an innovative way of cultivating role players in the minds of the citizens of Dawn.

Roleplay is one of the many things that Dawn boasts of. The region is home to both one liners which are a strange mix of straight out slapstick comedy hilarious to intense and realistic, and to long posts. The long posts are dominated by the likes of Lanceshir and Libero, who were once regular posters, and since then has seen several new long posters emerge. A large and vibrant community of Dawn deserves to be praised for the same.

Apart from the everyday life and the intense politics that revolves around the region of Dawn, a few more things that are held dear by the nations of Dawn are the huge arsenal of memes it possess. The bots and the memes generally liked the citizens is a testimony to the cultural growth of the region, that has begun to acquire a unique and a distinct taste in various things. Speaking of memes, the region is also home to some impressive creators, such as Jeff, who with his creativity has managed to create country balls revolving around Dawnians.

VDL and the Dark Times

A key element of the rich culture is also the award ceremony which is held at the discretion of the emperor. The awards are much honoured in the region which are given in rare occasions by the emperor himself to individuals who have distinguished themselves from the masses and proved themselves worthy. The Order of the Dawnian Empire is the highest honour, followed by various awards such as the Imperial Award of Defence, Imperial Award of Culture, Lanceshirian Award of Legislation, Liberoan Award of Roleplay, among many others.

A New Era

The start of the new era was the first general elections of 2018.

The General Elections scheduled for 13th January, 2018, was to be the first general elections under the newly implemented second constitution of Dawn, and hence was source of much excitement in the region. The elections pitted major parties against each other in a race that was set to be a heated contest for power, because of a key factor.

Lanceshir, who had been part of the region since the Great Exodus, and was often referred to as the 'Eternal’ Prime Minister of the region, owing to his impressive electoral career, had declared his intent not to contest. This was a surprising move for his party, LCVP, was predicted to win based on his charisma and influence, and hence, he was predicted to be re-elected into office.

Lanceshir out of the equation meant that now all the parties would essentially compete on equal grounds. Hence, the elections pitted all the parties in a heated run for the much coveted seat of the Prime Minister, the seat held for so long by Lanceshir. As a result the general elections was of particular interest to the region in general.

Prime Minister Jeff

The elections saw many parties emerged, rise and fall. One of the first parties created and which since then, consolidating on its influence among the comparatively much inexperienced players, and hence gaining a huge voters base and hence, significant influence in the region, and a favourite, was the DLD party led by The nation of jeff, who was also the cartographer of the region among many other things.

The LCVP, in the absence of Lanceshir was led by VDL. VDL had formerly created a party which eventually he chose to abandon, and hence was awarded leadership in the LCVP. The party consolidated it’s position among the much more experienced members of Dawn and hence, had gained considerable voters. However, the size of the party following many defections and it’s members leaving the region independently proved to be a challenge.

The IPD was the next important party that disintegrated prior to the elections. The party was led by American haiti, who had been an integral part of Dawn, along with several members who were relatively new to the region. The party had proved itself to be a formidable opponent with its vast size. However, prior to the elections, an interview held revealed the weak points of the party which resulted in the party breaking apart close to the elections.

Haiti himself joined LCVP. However, the fate of the party was much harsher. The party went through a split, with some of its members following Kazabaltica, someone who showed to have the calibre to lead the party and having the experience to sustain it, and the others going on their own personal ventures. Kazabaltica contested the elections as an independent candidate, and emerged to be a popular choice in the region.

Another party which was in the race theoretically, but it’s small size and lack of influence meant it stood no real chance, was the UL led by Verdantia, a prominent citizen who had often taken controversial stances on various issues. The intense campaigning by the other parties and an inactivity spell ensured that this party was out of the race for the time being.

Hence, the stage was set for a political confrontation, however, the political climate was calm and predictable. The lack of any read opposition ensured that there was only one real winner and hence, the elections only further proved that. Hence, the elections on 13th January saw the DLD occupy the majority, with 4 seats, followed by LCVP, with 2 and Kazabaltica claiming a seat. Hence the 7 seat unicameral parliament was set.

Start of the End

American Haiti

As mentioned before, the new parliament was filled with many new members who had gained popularity in the region, especially among the much younger players. Hence, as a result, within the region, there was a small group of dissenters who were often suppressed through extreme measures, which further have a boost to such dissenters.

The new parliament, which marked the end of an era, had immediately set to work by making several amendments to the constitution, which, as pushed by the Emperor himself, sought to strengthen the existing institutions. More importantly, the existing systems were more properly used, such as, a separate debate channel and so forth.

A new development further pushed the region on a different direction. This could broadly be categorised into two moves by the Eternal Protector of the Empire, Langor laiket, alternatively also known as Atero.

The first was his paranoia. He suspected Kazabaltica of malpractices, which he managed to uncover and hence pushed the charges of electoral violations. As the charges did fit, hence, in a short trial, Kazabaltica, the newly elected MP, was stripped of his position. While Kazabaltica gracefully accepted the verdict, nonetheless, there were reservations about the stern methods being used by Langor to implicate others.

The next was his enforcement of regulations. He was seen as an authoritative figure who was prepared to go to any lengths to preserve peace and stability in the region. The conflict reached its peak when he denied access to another well known member of the region, who had joined recently, which led to many opposing the move. All this culminated in a conspiracy being formed which sought Langor to abdicate and push for democratic reforms, which would also reduce the powers of the Emperor.

The faction, consisting of Xadrya, Lanceshir, Libero, Migres, and so forth. The faction sternly believed Langor to be the source of the authoritarianism in Dawn and hence wished to see him out of Dawn. Similarly, they also were crafting a new constitution with the help of VDL, who was not that involved for he was suspected of staying loyal to Langor. Hence, in private, they continued their works.

Nonetheless, when the Emperor heard of the same, it led to a new faction being formed. Langor and a set of loyalists argued for a more authoritative system. Meanwhile, the other faction argued for a more liberal system that would account for their basic civil liberties and rights. Split between the two opposing views, ultimately, a poll was held which would shape Dawn's future for days to come. However, in the meantime, due to his personal deteriorating mental health, as well as the current political climate, Langor decided to leave NationStates and hence, resigned from his positions and left the game.

The polls were set up. With the future of Dawn on the line, many came out and voiced their opinions as the international world looked on the same with much interest. The polls offered two extreme choices. Neither of the views could fully be accepted by anyone, however, the extremes were proposed with the view that every other alternative has failed. Hence, the two views could broadly be categorised as authoritative on one end and libertarian on the other. The polls had a certain feature of their own. During this time, there was a sudden silence in the region as everyone actively voted in the polls. While some campaigned privately, publicly, neither side tried to promote their views. The choice was left solely to the citizens of Dawn. And hence, the polls came to an end.

Most of the voters voted against the authoritative system. While this was not implemented, it is important to understand the system that was proposed, as it would not vanish from Dawn for a long time.

The system proposed was full Conventism. A parallel could be drawn to the system in UCR. As per the proposal, the democratic institutions which has led to so many issues in the region were to be taken down. Instead a centralised system was to be implemented. This centralised system would be led by the monarch and his Conventium, which was a group of individuals who were appointed and tasked with administration among many other areas. However, the polls proved that the citizens did not like this system. The alternative to this was a libertarian system, which would essentially be built on partisan politics. The system also had a highly internationalist approach in terms of foreign affairs and proposed setting up of a military. And hence, despite having voted to stay in the previous polls, this would mean Dawn was to move out of Yukki and pursue its own foreign policy and ties.

Langor's end

While the results of the polls were widely accepted by everyone, the region failed in implementing many aspects of it.

The region had one fatal problem. That was balancing between party politics and the parliament. Essentially that was the problem that plagued the region this time too.

The factional split had far reaching impacts in terms of party politics. Jeff, the Prime Minister at the time, had opposed Migres, who was part of the faction pushing for libertarian measures. As a result there was a split, with Migres forming the Liberal Alternative for Dawn (LafD), later renamed to GAU. Similarly, Kazabaltica capitalised on his popularity by making the Center Right Union (CRU) party.

This meant the parliamentary structure had changed. DLD no longer held the dominant position. LCVP had dissolved and Van Demeins Land was holding his seat as an independent candidate. Now, the structure of parliament had changed to 2-2-2-1, with DLD, LAfD and CRU holding 2 seats each and Van Demeins Land as the independent candidate.

As the stage of set for power to be shifted to the palm of another, the parliament was dysfunctional. Against the backdrop of “liberal” reforms that was promised, this is disappointing, as speculations of a new elections went around. All this ultimately culminated in a new Prime Minister.

Van Demeins Land, with support from CRU and LAfD managed to become the Prime Minister. This was also the time Oak became the Defence Minister with Kazabaltica as his deputy, with support from Muko (an ally of Ex Patria from New Western Atlantic).

Defence Minister was previously held by Pracinha, alternatively known as Vetelo from USSD, and Migres, however, they ultimately failed. While Oak managed to form a military and have its structure, the military was mostly inactive and performed little to nothing.

Within just weeks, Langor also returned, and pledged to not involve himself with politics in the region and aided in bureaucratic work, through constitutional amendments and publishing articles and so forth.

Hence, there was peace in the region after the results of the polls. However, as it had become common for Dawn, a new threat was looming. The end of the region was close as the month of February saw another major political confrontation.

A Dream of Greatness

Dawn had never been a stranger to ambitions. However, more often than not, some ambitions tend to become too much for the region to handle. And so it retaliates. It fights back. However, one can only fight back for so long.

With Van Demeins Land in power, albeit only temporarily, activity did resume in the parliament with many more legislations being passed. However, due to the negligence of the MPs, gradually, inactivity crept back in. Nonetheless, it could be seen as an improvement from the previous state. Amidst this, there was concerns about the Emperor’s mental state, as he was diagnosed with clinical depression. As a result, a new plan was being formulated.

The intention of the “changes” was to relieve the pressure on the Emperor by making a decision making body that would administer the region and at the same time keep activity alive. It was the view of this faction that the region has certain core members. Hence only they need to be given powers. Alternate areas could be focused on, such as roleplay.

This faction was led by Atero, who somehow managed to find himself politically involved despite his pledge not to be. The plan was pushed forward when the Emperor announced that he was on a hiatus, and hence, Atero had the powers.

In order to make the region more centralised and implement what he called as “full Conventism”, he pushed forward his plans. He sought to make the region roleplay oriented and kill any political activity in the region. While it garnered some dissent, publicly it was essentially unopposed as the established players were either in support of the move, which included the Prime Minister Van Demeins Land, and another prominent citizen, Verdantia. Overall, Langor’s actions were unopposed as the Emperor was not there, hence he was the highest authority.

With some people appealing to the Emperor, he returned briefly, during which, it became visible that there was a rift between Langor and Ex Patria, a group of dissenters gathered and planned to overthrow this new undemocratic regime by resigning and publicly dissenting against them. This started with Zenstrum resigning from his position as the Minister of Roleplay.

This was followed by a series of dissenters coming to the front as the region came alive once again, with the two factions face to face yet again. And so, Atero was once again opposed and he left the region. However, this time, there was a new alternative.

Ex Patria had become close with the founder monarch of New Western Atlantic, which was earlier a region that was despised by Dawnians as the region that provided shelter to many who escaped from Dawn. However, as ties improved following the reforms in the policies, the two became better allies. Impressed with the Atlantican system, there were talks of a merger. This event brought that idea to the limelight.

End of Dawn

It had become painfully clear that the region cannot hope to survive when political activity was artificially stimulated by a few, and the region was already on the verge of dying, with one after another crisis. Hence, this plan was adopted by the cabinet, with Kazabaltica as the Prime Minister, as Van Demeins Land temporarily left the region as well. Kazabaltica became the Prime Minister due to the popular support, despite not having completed his term dictated by the court. He led the merger by garnering support for it and leading the region, essentially. The merger agreement itself was favourable to Dawnians, with senate seats and high court positions reserved and so forth. Hence the merger was pushed forward with March 1 as the deadline. With some Dawnians expressing discontentment over the same, the merger ultimately happened as the Dawnians moved to New Western Atlantic or NWA.

However, Dawn as a region did not vanish. Instead, the region was given to August, a prominent figure in the interregional community, who took over the administration and sought to bring the region back from ruins.

And so, a dream of greatness of a region, born out of turmoil, escaping from tyranny, was ultimately torn apart by internal turmoil and tyrannical rule of its own, and ultimately came to an end. Hence, in a sudden manner, the tale of a region which dared to dream came to an end.

Writer's Note II

Dawn was a wonderful region, wherein I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people. However, Dawn is a reminder that political turmoil within the region can ultimately lead to its death. And it is a reminder that no region, no matter how big, is ever eternal. Dawn, a region that grew to the size of 400, died before even reaching one year of its inception. And now, former citizens move elsewhere. Perhaps to NWA, perhaps somewhere else. They go and shape a new future for themselves. The region is nothing more than a collection of citizens. And so, as long as the citizens live on, so will Dawn…

And so will the dream…
