Sorry for your loss but these are just the side affects of war, you shouldn't excuse your individual family as a valid reason to support the people fighting for slavery. This also sounds, way, way too specific I'm kinda having trouble those things actually happened but that besides the point. You know how many more innocent lives were lost at the hands of slavery? Millions. And for you saying that you wanted that continue makes me sick to my stomach, not to mention the loss of intellectual potential. I am sorry, your individual family does not excuse the terrible tortures that millions faced over centuries.

Not saying it's right. I am personally repulsed that someone would think that those views are valid. He did not fight to defend his homeland. Because it was not attacked. The federal government was not doing anything. The Southerners, without any provocation, started a rebellion against a democratically elected national government. Simply because they did not like the outcome of the election (which they helped to bring about by splitting the Democratic Party). I.e. they did the same thing that modern terrorists did last Wednesday. Very importantly, the Southern states agreed to the rules of the game in advance. In fact, in 1787 they already acted like spoiled brats (which the planters' sons indeed were) and negotiated the rules heavily tilting the playing field in their favor, giving them (via three fifths compromise and equal representation of states in the Senate) a share of the Electoral College votes way out of proportion to their actual share of the American voting population. Still, they lost and then acted like very sore losers. Yes, I would condemn a Revolutionary War era New Englander for treason if he had an elected MP in British parliament and took up arms because the other party won majority of seats in parliament and he hated the new PM. But the whole point of that war was that American colonies had no representation in parliament whatsoever.

I don't know whether your ancestor was brainwashed by slave owners or consciously fought to defend a system of rigid social hierarchy in which he held a privileged position (way above both slaves and free blacks) simply by virtue of being white. It's interesting BTW that in West Virginia and East Tennessee where there were hardly any slaves (or their owners) white men displayed very little interest in "defending their homeland from an invading army" (in fact many joined the invading army), despite your claims that they identified with their states rather than the US. But the objective fact is that your ancestor was a terrorist who tried to destroy self-government. Which just can't exist if the election losers resort to violence instead of accepting defeat.

Neither. But that's not really the point. You express regret that the American system of self-government was not destroyed a century and a half ago.

Smaller areas cannot govern themselves. What you want is essentially feudalism. Which you had in the Confederacy. Except the slaves were much worse off than serfs.

I Mean you Grew up with Moscow being the Center of a Gigantic Empire Run by Gangsters who enacted Self Destructive Policies that Didn't benefit the People in the Rural areas so you don't think twice about any of that.

The Japanese did worse to members of my family and people they knew on a continual basis in the Philippines during World War 2 -- survivors of such atrocities I grew up knowing, yet I don't hate the Japanese. Hating people for things that happened nearly two hundred years ago and then trying to pass that hatred off as rational is just sad.
