I was raised Jewish, and had a bar mitzvah which came with years of Hebrew school before that. All throughout Hebrew school it was near pounded in to me that Israel was the home of the Jewish people and that in all their conflicts they were in the right. So growing up, before I had a chance to really develop any strong political beliefs, I was fervently pro-Israel and believe that our enemies the other Arabic countries wanted us destroyed. Nowadays I am very liberal, not quite socialist or communist, but still very liberal, but my unwavering support for Israel still stands, even despite the fact I know they've done horrible things and the fact I stand with the left on nearly every other issue.

That view, that I still somewhat hold, is certainly influenced by my religion. So while I am not religious and go days without thinking about religion or gods or anything like that, I've undoubtedly been affected by my religion and political views in ways I likely don't even recognize.

Interesting, I'm half Palestinian, but my views on Israel never changed when I was a child and after I left religion

What are your views on Israel, just out of curiosity? I'm not looking to argue with you I'm just genuinely curious what you think :)

Coming from a refugee-grandparents background who were kicked out from "Haifa", I can't help but to have negative thoughts 🤷‍♂️😅

I consider myself to be catholic (although quite loosely), and I think although it hasn't influenced my politics too much (they aren't too different from what I believed during my embarrassing New Atheist phase) it has had some effect on my worldview.

Catholics used to be persecuted politically in the UK (to a very limited extent they still are- a catholic cannot become the monarch). Learning about that time, and the efforts to emancipate catholics, has helped me to understand how (in my opinion) attacks on whole religious groups are so often fearmongering with little basis in reality.

A wise man once said; 'Politics is religion.'

Just saw a quote I like quite a lot:

"Success isn't owned. It's leased, and the rent is due every day."

I get that. I occasionally work with a guy who is a Palestinian born in Jordan. He's an incisive personality anyway, and his background gives him a really interesting perspective on world affairs. Mostly we chat about guns and 2nd amendment stuff. He is... how do I put this... passionately comitted to the right to defend property by force of arms. Nobody's going to be taking anything from him without a fight.

As for myself, I'm asatru/heathen. My religion has an ongoing problem with entryism by racialists who want "paganism for muh white people". This makes it hard for those of us who are right-of-center but not, you know, idiots and jerks.

One way my religious beliefs have influenced my politics, especially as I've drifted rightward with age, is that I don't have the hangups about sexuality and gender that, say, a typical conservative evangelical might. Also, while I have the same preference for tradition as most on the right, as both a pagan and a New Englander the traditions "of my people" are generally quite progressive

That's really interesting actually, also it's the first time I met an asatru/heathen, I've read that they're no more than 20,000 worldwide, I mean it's a rare thing, so it's really interesting to finally meet one 😁
Nice to meet you

I think 20k is probably on the low end these days. My group expects to double in size within 10 years just based on natural growth from our kids aging in, and we've averaged 1-2 adults or families joining per year since I joined around 5 years ago. Our lager regional community has probably 900-1200 people involved, if I had to guess, and I'd estimate that we account for at most 30% of the heathens in the region (Northeast US+Southeast Canada). Its hard to say though. For instance I have no first-hand knowledge of the huge swathe of racist asatru centered in large part on the US prison system.

Its a religion with a ton of problems, but the folks my family are involved with are really fantastic, and its been a wonderful community for or kids.

Double posting you mean quoting my own post?
Sorry didn't know that
Or posting twice in a row?

Right, should have defined that. My bad. Yes, that would be posting twice in a row. If you missed something, you can come back and edit it. If you're looking to quote someone in an edit, you can press "Quote" and then just copy the code in the box and paste it into the edit box. If that makes sense.

No worries! You're a newcomer here. Everyone had to learn the rules at one point or another! I'm just happy you're willing to follow them. Sometimes, we have issues with that.

I’m a non-practising Christian - although I hardly go to church, I still do think God is there to guide me through life.

I’ve answered “religion and politics are completely separate” as I have almost never come across a time where I have changed my political stance because of religious views. Religion used to be a massive factor in politics in the past but now I find it almost irrelevant.
