With N-Day upon us I figured a faction could be useful!

Uhhhhh.........Hi

Sorry for the late response, but welcome!

Straight up evil dudes

Hey, y'all. Listen to Statues of Cats, they're a pretty good band. They're the bomb dot com, as you silly people on the interwebs say.

Seeing as it's been 18 days since the last RP question, allow me to pose you one: History books often speak about leaders who are generally considered "great", but also about leaders who brought ruin to their people. Who is your country's worst leader?

For example, in terms of the cost of life in Daito as a result of the war he got the country involved in, it would be a fair assessment to claim that Hisayuki Sonyu, the Prime Minister of Daito from 1937 to 1945, was among the worst. However, where he stands above others is in his efforts to uproot and destroy democracy within the country, imposing a one-party, authoritarian regime upon the country and encouraging rampant xenophobia, all in "the name of the Emperor", when in reality, he was seeking power for himself and to "correct" perceived past wrongs against the "old order".

I feel I have to say it, but please do not endorse me for being the World Assembly Delegate. That's Ach's role, not mine, nor do I want it.

DaitoTIO wrote:Seeing as it's been 18 days since the last RP question, allow me to pose you one: History books often speak about leaders who are generally considered "great", but also about leaders who brought ruin to their people. Who is your country's worst leader?

郝玉都: The Free Leader of the Wondrous People - socialist revolutionary (and unelected) leader between 1891 and 1935.

Since its founding in 1196, Pandect has experienced considerable political and military upheaval but was relatively stable from 1734 with the establishement of the hereditary Szondi Dynasty. However a military coup in 1891 by socialist leader 郝玉都, of the Wondrous People party, sadly led to the decline of the country. Poor political decisions led to a closing of the borders, along with insular policies and curtailing of mercantile freedoms. This struck the economy hard as the industrial revolution took off in other countries, and Pandect was left with little to trade anyway, even if the borders had remained open. Prior to the political revolution the ruling Szondi Dynasty had promoted learning and foreign trade which allowed the nation to become particularly wealthy as a trade centre for the surrounding region. On the first of May 1935 Lazaros Szondi returned to take power with a privately funded army, returning the country to prosperity. Since that time the country has been a benevolent Constitutional Monarchy with a parliamentary system of democracy.

Both the armed forces and naval forces still use the previous revolutionary administration's appelations, the Pandectorian Defence League (Army) and The Wondrous People's Navy (Navy); since it was deemed socially disruptive and not cost-effective to rebrand these large established organisations again.

S.U.E.D has never ever had a bad leader!

(But if you were to take a quick peek through our Dear Leader's copy of The Book of Super Secret Nation Secrets, a book which details every single thing that the nation is keeping secret, it's clear that the worst leader was [CENSORED BY STATE AUTHORITY]. He ran from 1970 to 1971. He tried to do an ad campaign to encourage people to be nicer to the people around them. After being executed by firing squad, all records of him existing were stricken out, erasing this tyrant out of history. [CENSORED BY STATE AUTHORITY] was a scourge upon our great nation, so no one really minds.)

A message from the Editor

I would like to apologize on behalf of the entire staff here at the offices of The Breaking Wave; we were unable to publish the December issue as usual due to an unavoidable and urgent personal matter. While we are unable to refund your subscription fees at this time, we hope this picture of The Goodest Boy will provide some compensation for the inconvenience and/or existential crises you may have suffered due to our late publishing date. ~Pantso

News from Around the Islands

Election Results

November elections were closed on the 21st with few surprises. AxeCapital, of House of the Sword, has resumed the Himes West position after Haivon declined to run again. Keswickholt retained the position of Senator of Lyonesse East. After an unexpected last-minute declaration, Ugtaui, also of House of the Sword, was able to take up the New Republica South seat in a special election. The Council of Nine welcomes AxeCapital back, and Ugtaui for the first time, into their ranks.

AxeCapital and Keswickholt apparently have some big plans to rejuvenate the Houses and RP communities. While the details are currently a closely-guarded secret, AxeCapital campaigned on the promise of a “mega event”, saying “We're gonna skyrocket activity all across XKI, believe me. It's gonna be super-duper, the best you've ever seen”. We look forward to seeing what these two experienced Senators have in store for us.

We reached out to Ugtaui for comment about their recent election to the Council and received this response via Telegram: “One of my main goals is for more in game connection outside the forum. I feel like the rmb should involve more rp (ik we have rp servers, but I feel like people should be able to roleplay anywhere). I also want to establish a economic council or smth along those lines.” Sounds like the freshman Senator has lofty goals already. Good luck!

The Goodest Boy

Note: I am shamelessly abusing my position as an XKI regional officer, Senator, and editor-in-chief of The Breaking Wave to plug support for my friend and her dog ~Pantso

If you love dogs, or your fellow Islanders, or just need to get on Santa’s good side this month, please send your love to Pyr Isle’s dog Brodie (pictured above), who was diagnosed with bone cancer last month and had his right foreleg amputated at the shoulder in an effort to prolong his life. Brodie is a Great Pyrenees, and while small for his breed he still checks in at over 80lbs (~36kgs). This poses some unique challenges as dogs put most of their weight on their front paws and Brodie is much too large to be carried for long. Nevertheless, he is stubborn, strong, and apparently unconcerned about his disability. Brodie started chemotherapy late in November and the prognosis is good. After seeing him already walking about on three legs, his physical therapist said “Don’t bother with rehab; he clearly doesn’t need it.” Please join me in wishing Brodie a speedy recovery and a happy life filled with treats, ear rubs, long walks, and lots of love.

Islander Achievements

Free Las Pinas, of House of Tasdorf, was appointed the Cards Co-op President position after New Kowloon Bay stepped down. Free Las Pinas is an experienced player who held the same role in 2021. The Cards Co-op is an XKI organization dedicated to collecting and trading XKI Cards. Those nations interested in participating should visit the LinkCards Co-op thread on the forum.

Pantso, of House of the Sword, has accepted a new role as Ambassador to The League. This position has been unfilled for some months, but after some discussion with XKI Delegate Astrobolt, he agreed to take up the position. Upon accepting, Pantso issued the following statement: “I will endeavor to serve with honor and grace; and failing that at least with wit and good humor.”

Pantso has also been named as the newest Executive Officer of TITO!

Parsend(Lenlyvit), of House of the Defenders, has been appointed Regional Reserve Chair, filling in for Paffnia who has stepped down. The Regional Reserve Chair has many responsibilities related to XKI’s regional economy and financial matters, including overseeing the Mortimer Reports, NS Stock Market, wills, and shop purchases..

TITO Medal Day was December 6, where XKI recognizes those nations whose service to the Islands goes above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Executive Markanite has awarded the following medals to TITO members:

Paffnia: the Legion of Merit, which is given for exemplary service to 10,000 Islands and NS as a whole.
HN67: 10,000 Islands Distinguished Service Medal is awarded for long-term outstanding leadership to TITO or 10,000 Islands.
Flying Eagles, Smugglers and Mercs, Onfande, Astrobolt: the Silver Star, given to nations showing superb service while in the line of fire on TITO operations.
Wille-Harlia, Woonsocket, Valentian Elysium: Commendation Medal, granted for exemplary service and achievements which has raised the quality of life in 10,000 Islands.
Pantso: Iwerddon Service Medal, awarded for fine service to the Islands and its people.

In addition, the following nations have been awarded the Steadfast Badge for displaying the core qualities of TITO: Loyalty, Honesty, Friendship, and Steadfast Commitment:
Minata, Spratly Islands, Wazeww, Uritis, AxeCapital, Pantso, Vivolkha, Transisrael, Alto mare

And the TITO Quick Reaction Force Combat Pin has been given to these nations for demonstrating a consistent, dependable presence during updates:
Spratly Islands, Wazeww, Minata, Pantso

XKI Game-Side

A Taco Paradise continues to grow and is now 198 nations, an increase of approximately 22% since November.

Senator for Himes West, AxeCapital, has recently been dropping hints about a major RP event. Rumor has it that this ambitious plan will give new RP players a chance to grab important positions and valuable territory previously unavailable. Set your passive scanners to maximum resolution and pay attention; more news will follow.

XKI History

December 1 was Improving Wordiness Day, when we honor one of the most famous Islanders of all time, Wordy. Accruing an impressive 20,000 posts on the forum during her time in XKI, Wordy more than lived up to her name. She was recognized as Rookie of the Quarter, served on TITO Command, and started her own House which still exists today as the LinkHouse of Improving Wordiness.

For her efforts and contributions to TITO Wordy was granted some of XKI’s most prestigious awards, including the prestigious Anime Daisuke Cross and a Legion of Merit. The full list of her commendations is lengthy, but at an impressive 15 medals she is one of the most decorated TITO Knights of all time. The first day of December is set aside to honor and respect Wordy and the example she set for all Islanders.

House Call

Keswickholt has announced the new LinkXKI Housing association, where Islanders and especially House members may post suggestions for improving or expanding on the Great Houses. Nations interested in joining a House should check out his dispatch: page=dispatch/id=1441682

Rotunda Rap

Debate continues in the Rotunda about a TITO Startup program. Pantso, Porflox of House of Improving Wordiness, Wille-Harlia of House Tasdorf, and others have all been involved in brainstorming options to get new Islanders involved and engaged in Defending, follow up with them once they become eligible to join TITO, and educate them about the mechanics in the meantime. LinkJoin the discussion!

Some questions have come up about tools to make Endoswapping/Endotarting simpler. Endoswapping is the practice of endorsing other nations with the intent to receive an endorsement in return. Since endorsements increase the rate at which nations gain influence, and regions with high influence are harder to raid, swapping endorsements increases regional security. Endotarting is the practice of mass endorsing nations with the same goal. Currently NationStates does not have a good interface to enable these practices, so some regions have come up with tools to help. If you have any input or questions on the subject, feel free to chime in Linkhere!

Council of Nine Legislation

In the past month several laws were voted on and passed but, due to IRL concerns, had not yet been finalized and entered into the Great Library. This has now been sorted and the following bills have become XKI law:

LinkDisbursement of Assets of Parties and Houses, which provides a mechanism to share the assets of a defunct House or Political Party;

LinkAmending the Duties of the MoC corrects an oversight in NS-367-2 in order to permit the Minister of Culture to hire staff;

LinkBlue Canaria North Senator Responsibilities Act, which directs the BCN Senator to create a single monthly report for both the Islands and its allied and embassy regions.

This legislative session also included the rejection of several Embassy requests and the closure of embassies with inactive regions. The LinkXKI Law Archive has links to these bills and the voting record.

Winter Blizzard Bash - Snow Fall Buries the Opposition

This winter 10,000 Islands joined The East Pacific, The Grey Wardens, The Rejected Realms, and The South Pacific in a Winter Blizzard Bash to celebrate the season. The event, which started on December 24 and ran until January 3, featured a Snowy Mafia Mystery, a Snowed in Radio contest, several movie nights, crosswords and other games, art and story submissions, Whispers in the Wind to show appreciation for other players, and an epic 10-day snowball spam fight.

Participants were divided into three teams - Snow Fall, Sleet Squall, and Hail Storm - and were awarded points for attendance to events and winning contests. Team Snow Fall stormed into an early lead due to event participation and contest submissions. By day 6 they had plowed up an impressive 234 points, with far and away the heaviest accumulation . . . until the awards for the “A Winter’s Tale” story contest and Snowflake Art contest were counted. Victories there let Sleet Squall sweep into first with 336 points. Sleet Squall held the lead for two days while Hail Storm and Snow Fall struggled to catch up - and the latter managed to breeze into first place with victories in the Snowy Mafia Mystery game and Snowed in Radio submission. The final tally was Snow Fall (489), Sleet Squall (411), and Hail Storm (295).

Most importantly, everyone had a great time in spite of some unfortunately canceled events, and we all look forward to another one next year. See you there!

XKI Holiday Events

The XKI Ministry of Culture hosted its own contests and events in the week between Christmas and the New Year, featuring riddling, a caroling contest, and a showing of the 2000 “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” with Jim Carrey, Jeffrey Tambor, and Kelley (the dog).

Minister of Culture Wille-Harlia’s riddles were:

“What do you call a reindeer with three eyes?"

a “reiiindeer”
"You can catch me easily, especially during the holidays, but you can never throw me. What am I?"
a cold
"What is something that travels around the globe like Santa Claus, yet never leaves its corner?"
a stamp

Only two nations guessed all three riddles - Az Kron and Macrasetia. Congratulations on their cleverness and we hope they enjoy their generous Taco prizes!

The Caroling Contest fortunately did not require singing, only a bit of writing, and the current Poet Laureate (yours truly) submitted the sole entry:

Roleplay Event at A Taco Archipelago

AxeCapital has been teasing a major RP event taking place in A Taco Archipelago. It’s taken a while but it looks like things are coming together and we should see some major news on that soon.

The new event is tailor-made for nations new to RP or new to the region. It will give you a chance to seize power and territory in a space that has previously been dominated by massive interplanetary empires. We’ll be sending out more information as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime get your backstories and origins down, practice your accent and start running drills on your battlecruisers! The day of reckoning will come sooner than you think . . .

News from the Front

The war between 10,000 Islands and Lone Wolves United and their respective allied regions continues. While TITO is famously close-lipped about operations, Command has authorized the announcement of two major victories for Defenders against LWU. In the past month we were able to liberate two regions the raiders had seized; Kelios and Discornesia. These two frontier regions were raided in the middle of December 2023 and were each liberated in joint operations a few days afterward. TITO is proud to have ended the year with these two victories and wishes Kelios and Discornesia luck in 2024.

XKI History

~ Jan 4 was the 20th anniversary of the ratification of XKI’s LinkConstitution. 10,000 Islands was one of the first regions in NationStates to write its own constitution, a feat that contributed to its Commendation in 2010. The XKI Constitution defines the makeup and powers of the regional government, the Council of Nine, made up of the Executive and Legislative branches. The Executive Branch includes the Chief Executive its ministers of Culture, Education, and Immigration, the Delegate, and several Officers reporting to the Chief Executive.

The Legislative Branch is made up of four Senators, with each position named for a famous Islander: Blue Canaria North, Lyonesse East, New Republica South, and Himes West. In addition to writing and voting on legislation, opening and closing embassies, and other matters the Chief Executive brings before the Senators, each has their own individual responsibilities as well.

Article V of the Constitution defines the Bill of Rights, establishing the rights of each nation to self-determination and freedom of speech.

~ Jan 25 is Founder’s Day, the 21st anniversary of the founding of the nation of Grub, XKI’s Founder. As the region existed before the “Founder” mechanic was established in NationStates, the name of the true founder, as well as the origins of XKI’s name, is lost to time. Grub was given the position when it was introduced and now has a permanent place in XKI history.

More of this ancient history has been recorded in the Historical Archives Linkhere.

~ Feb 10 is Delegate Day, where XKI honors past and current UN/WA Delegates. After 20 years XKI has had over 40 delegates, some of who have served more than once. Notable Delegates include:
Markanite, known for serving as Delegate four times (and accidentally resigning from the World Assembly twice);
Wischland, who expanded XKI’s influence and reach by organizing numerous cross-regional events and alliances;
Lenlyvit, a three-time Delegate who oversaw the signing of treaties with the Union of Democratic States, The South Pacific, and The East Pacific. XKI’s population peaked at 3,309 with 868 endorsements during the apex of his term;
Paffnia, who introduced the practice of mass-telegraming updates to Islanders and notifying the region WA resolutions were being discussed.

Read more about the history of XKI’s Delegates Linkhere in the Great Library!

(Why UN? That’s another bit of NationStates history. Originally NS had a “United Nations”, not a “World Assembly”. However, the actual UN took umbrage at the use of its name and logo. After some extremely pleasant correspondence between Max Barry and the United Nations, NationStates ended up with a “World Assembly”. You can read about the Linksaga on his web site.)

House Call

~ The House Cup competition will be held from January 8 to the 19th of February, with the winner announced on Leap Day, February 29. The House Cup is awarded to the House that recruits the most new members during the time allotted.

In addition, Keswickholt has announced a contest to submit a design for a logo for the XKI Housing Association. Good designs will capture the essence of the Houses. To submit your design either PM it to Keswickholt on NS or Discord, or upload it to the #houses channel on the discord server.

~ The House of the Sword and the House of the Defenders welcome new nations!
Deathless corpus joined The House of the Sword on January 1
The European Grand Order and Manneo Varo joined the House of the Defenders on January 2 and January 3.

Rotunda Rap

~ LinkTITO Startup Program - after much brainstorming in a public forum, this discussion will most likely be moved to TITO Command for further discussion and planning. However, nations with other ideas are still free to post in the existing thread.
~ Astrobolt suggested that our treaties with other regions be posted in a common area for easy access, an idea that saw immediate approval and action by Minister of Education Valentian Elysium. The discussion was Linkhere; the link to all the treaties is Linkhere

Additional discussions, brainstorms, and ideas for Council legislation are always welcome in the LinkPaffnia Rotunda!

Council of Nine Legislation

In December the Council voted to close embassies with several inactive regions, including Philosophy 115, Arctic, Iran, New West Indies, and Vahalla. The legislation record is available Linkhere in the Law Archives of the Great Library.

Hello all, I come bearing a double issue (because I forgot to deliver the January update, published in early-mid February)! First is the January version of our foreign affairs update which can be read in full here.

Second is a special update: our Chief Executive Markanite has announced that he will be stepping down. He has invoked Article 2 of our Constitution and named Lenlyvit (Former Delegate) as his successor. The transition has begun and will conclude by mid-late March.

Read Markanite's statement in full here: 10000islands.proboards.com/thread/44793/time-new-chief-executive

We hope you have a great day!
