Protectorate Fact #24

Today's Protectorate Fact is, once again, a dispatch.

This factbook will be subject to updates when relevant.

Notes

This factbook provides a short overview of various individuals within the Protectorate. Important to note here is the politicial alignment, which is in this dispatch split into five categories: Sejmists, Royalists, Mihalites, Neutrals and Independents. These political factions betray the complexity of Protectorati politics but are useful for categorisation purposes. They reflect the stance of an individual in isolation, rather than pragmatic positions held only when the circumstances demand it.

Sejmists are individuals who believe that the Sejm, and the estates contained within, should hold supreme power in Kretaza. Usually this means that they are members of the Sejm, particularly from the Upper Nobility, who want to increase or ensure their own power. Most Sejmists hoped to eliminate the political power of the King during the civil war, but not execute or depose him; nevertheless, they do want want a restoration now that he is gone.

Royalists are individuals who believe that a monarch should be the supreme government of Kretaza - essentially, anyone who would have supported the royalists over the sejmists during the civil war. They actively push for a return to monarchy. Royalism is actively outlawed and there are no open royalists in Protectorati high society.

Mihalites are individuals who follow the Mihalite school of Bowism, which in its modern form includes strong opposition to monarchy on a spiritual level. Most non-Cizimenean Mihalites are politically close to the Lord Protector or new army, and hold anti-royalism to be a more important principle than rule by the Sejm. They are the most supportive group of the current protectorate system.

Neutrals are individuals with goals different to, but not contrary to, the goals of other factions. They will accept the wider governmental status quo even if it changes and focus on smaller issues such as trade and road-building.

Independents are individuals with goals different to, but also contrary to, the goals of other factions. This ranges from encouraging crime, to separatism, to internal migration.

It should also be noted that in the more nomadic Cizimenean tribes, writing is rarely used and especially record-keeping. As a result, most individuals from these tribes do not have a recorded date of birth.

The New Army

Members of the New Army, the standing army of the Protectorate which effectively controls the government.

Yulakorszan (the Lord Protector)

Stance: Mihalite
Age: Unrecorded, mid-late 40s

Yulakorszan, born Korszan and commonly known by his main title, is the Lord Protector of Kretaza, head of the New Army and Yula of the Cizimenean Confederation. Originally of the Magiak Tribe of Cizimene, he was able to persuade the tribe to allow him to lead a mercenary force contracted to the Sejmists. After much success and the return of the mercenary group, the Lord Protector stayed as a minor commander for the Sejmist cause, leading an army to great acclaim after its aristocratic general was assassinated. By the last two years of the war the Lord Protector had been chosen to lead the newly-formed New Army, and wiped out the two largest roylist armies in a single year - demonstrating his exceptional military skill and considerably shortening the conflict. After the war was completely won, the Lord Protector moved the absolutely loyal New Army on Kospal and was declared Lord Protector through a mixture of respect and coercion. Shortly afterwards, he abused his position to extend his tenure indefinitely, and manipulate the Sejm so that a call to execute the King was passed despite having only minority support. After establishing his position he allowed the Sejm to govern in most matters, in order to prevent rebellion, but ensured that funding for the New Army's continued existence would always be obtained. Following the Pridosi invasion, he was elected Yula of Cizimene as a compromise candidate.

The Lord Protector is intensely religious, being brought up in Mihaly's own Magiak tribe, and skews somewhere between the original austere Mihalism and the antiroyalist form common among Nizni Mihalites. He takes omens everyday and genuinely believes in a religiously-inspired anti-royal mission. Some commentators have declared the Lord Protector to be one of the most skilled military commanders in Kretazan history.

Ludvik

Stance: Migalite
Age: 41

Ludvik of the Keuplen Valley is the Marcher Lord of Fort Kirino. A sedentary Cizimenean of the Sioyo tribe, he originally offered his services to the royalists during the Kretazan civil war as a mercenary. As a defender during the Seige of Kospal, he saw the incompetence of the royal government first hand and after two years defected to the Sejmists. There, he helped to found the New Army. Now, Ludvik is a trusted and reliable lieutenant of the Lord Protector. As one of the less dogmatically ideological or religious members of the New Army leadership, he is often employed to represent it in international missions.

Jindrich

Stance: Mihalite
Age: 32

Jindrich of Mak Vara is the Marcher Lord of Fort Koreb. Hailing from the Great Lordship of Mak Vara, he only joined the New Army after the end of the Kretazan Civil War, and still then as an engineer. His work on improving the forts of the northern marches shortly after the war's end gained him favour in the eyes of the New Army leadership, and it was thought that his skills would make him an effective Marcher Lord. While he has indeed proved to be an excellent defensive planner, Jindrich has struggled in political matters, and while committed to 'Protectorati' ideology is less adept at arguing for it than most.

Nobles

Members of the Upper Nobility.

Paron

Stance: Independent
Age: 50

Paron, Great Lord of Fendirol, was once an unlikely candidate for the Protectorate's most powerful noble; middle-aged and from a minority region, he was not nearly as prominent as some other lords. But after years of relative inaction, his quick, opportunistic thinking has given him that prize. Paron was the eldest son of Great Lord Khay, who had two other sons named Ioran and Thawon whom were only slightly younger. When he died, Fendirol was split between the three. Paron, with the Great Lord title and Fendirolan capital of Deikei, long resented Fendirol's breakup. Surviving the Kretazan Civil War by residing in a river boat for it's entire duration and respresenting Fendirol as what was essentially a neutral party, he long hoped for his brothers' deaths. He would have to wait, as they survived the war as well. But when Ioran suddenly died, Paron saw his chance and usurped his title. On his way back from Ioran's funeral, the childless Thawon was murdered by a man under Paron's pay and his elder brother succeeded him.

Since Fendirol's reunification, Paron has pursued an uncharacteristically aggressive policy of heckling and disruption in the Sejm. He aims to elevate himself from a mere Great Lord, drawing on Fendirol's independent royal heritage, and either remove the nuisance of the New Army or establish an independent Kingdom in Fendirol.

Klement

Stance: Sejmist
Age: 35

Great Lord Klement of Mak Taro gained power when his uncle was murdered in the first months of the Kretazan Civil War, something that convinced him to become a committed Sejmist. While Klement has led Mak Taro close behind the Lord Protector's leadership, contributing soldiers and funds to most measures and rarely actively disparaging the New Army in the Sejm, this loyalty can be attributed more to the traditionally prominent role of Mak-Taro in Kretazan government and the pragmatic need for Klement to have a powerful, secure position in politics. In reality, Klement resents the Lord Protector and New Army for betraying the Sejmist cause and executing the King, who Klement and most other nobles had wanted to be relegated to a religious and militiary leader; thus putting real power in the hands of the Sejm. Klement hopes for the opportunity to take a stand against the New Army, and force it to concede power - thus putting the Sejm in its natural position as the supreme government of Kretaza.

Melichar

Stance: Sejmist
Age: 56

Great Lord Melichar of Mak Vara is both the least powerful and least interesting of the three Protectorati Great Lords. Ruling the hilly land of Mak Vara, Melichar came to power with the death of his brother from wounds received years earlier in the Kretazan Civil War. Melichar does not care as much about increasing the power of the Sejm as other nobles, but would side with them against the New Army if pushed. In the Sejm, there are two things that feature prominently in mentions of Melichar: his status as a Great Lord, and his large, well-groomed beard.

Kvar

Stance: Neutral
Age: 40

Kvar is the Lord of the Pranem Triangle. Or, more accurately, he is the Lord of each of the four individual lordships (Einara, Jezerip, Nivez and Trojulnik) of the Pranem triangle. Surrounded completely by marches, the lordships of Pranem have gone through family drama that a soap opera would find difficult to keep up with. Kvar is the fifth Lord in two centuries to control all four. An eccentric character among Lords, Kvar is often seen in the towns of the Pranem triangle disguised as a town crier, an attempt by him to gauge the economic situation of their markets without influencing their enthusiasm. Politically, Kvar seeks primarily to defend the interests of merchants, which almost uniquely among the Lords contribute a significant portion of his income.

Silnik

Stance: Independent
Age: 38

After the Protectorati Civil War, an expedition was sent by the victorious Sejmist forces to the island of Little Roptilky. The Lord of the Roptilky Islands, Ripac, had not been seen for four years, and pirate attacks had devastated multiple coastal villages. When they reached the Lord's fortress, they were greeted by a man who introduced himself as Silnik, Ripac's apparent successor. With an unusual accent and unrecorded pre-war activity, some members of the expedition were suspicious about Silnik and Ripac's fate (supposedly he had died of an infected mosquito bite), but it was not as if anything could be done about it. After Silnik was accepted into the Sejm, he single-handedly stopped the pirate attacks by appealing to the guardian spirits of the Bay of Kretaza- either that, or he called them off. It is rumoured that Silnik intentionally orders the extinguishing of Roptilky's main lighthouse during storms, in order to plunder ships wrecked on the rocks.

Katerina

Stance: Sejmist
Age: 43

Lady Katerina of Vychost is one of the few prominent women in the Sejm, as Protectorati succession typically has a male preference. She provided crucial aid to the Sejmists during the the Civil War, with Vychoster troops playing a crucial role in the siege of Kospal. As one of the more vocal Sejmists, Katerina was sidelined following the ascendancy of the radicals and New Army, but remains influential in what exists of a Sejmist faction because of Vychost's wealth.

Martin

Stance: Neutral
Age: 14

Lord Martin of Zwinhus is the youngest Lord to actually sit in the Sejm, rather than send a deputy in his place. He has often physically clashed with the Fendirolean members of the Sejm in their attempts to heckle other members, giving him more fame than he deserves. While Martin should be a Sejmist given the circumstances, he is not politically educated enough to make complex plans - thus robbing that faction of a potential ally.

Mechai

Stance: Independent
Age: 29

Lord Mechai of Xocas is known primarily for his association with Paron, the Great Lord of Fendirol. While the small Lordship of Xocas is outside the Fenidrol region, its population is largely Fendirolean-speaking and so its loyalities to Fendirol are often greater than those to Kretaza. This pro-Fendirolean tendency has reached its apex under Mechai, who seems to spend most of his time in the Sejm supporting Paron, and who has suggested in private that Xocas (along with its neighbouring Lordship Sarwak) be brought into an independent Fendirolean Kingdom if Paron was able to successfully establish one.

Urban Leaders

Major figures in the cities of the Protectorate, primarily Aldermen (as Protectorati cities are run by councils rather than Mayors)

Zeletir

Stance: Sejmist
Age: 70

Zeletir is an Alderman of Kospal, who is on most sessions nominated by its council to represent it in the Sejm. He has sat on over 80 tri-annual sessions of the Sejm, and is seen as a sort of 'elder statesman' by many of the urban-nominated members - though whether he is truly important enough to be worthy of that title is debateable. With his voice diminished by age, Zeletir wears iron-heeled boots specifically to gain the Sejm's attention by stomping. During the civil war, he was arrested for secretly being a Sejmist, in a time when Kospal was staunchly royalist, and held for several years.

Alois

Stance: Neutral
Age: 56

Alois of Kralovsky is the richest non-noble in the Protectorate, and is responsible for running a large number of wool-trading ships from the country's second largest city, Kralovsky. An alderman, effectively took control of his city's merchant guild in the chaos of the Civil War through a combination of bribery and coercion. Now, he effectively controls both the city's wool trade and its government, giving him unprecedented power among the merchant classes. While Alois does occasionally enter the Sejm, usually he nominates another city alderman to act on his behalf.

Mikolas

Stance: Royalist
Age: 49

Mikolas of Pranemest is one of the few remaining royalists in the Sejm, though he does not let anyone know it. An Alderman of the far northern city of Pranemest, he had acted as a double agent during the Civil War and never publicly revealed his royalism, allowing him to retain his position even after the New Army takeover. Mikolas has been responsible for harbouring several royalist rebels over the years, helping them to escape or enter the Protectorate through Pranemest's adjacence to the border-forming Pranem River. He was recently elected to the Sejm, from which he helped to coordinate an ill-fated royalist uprising ended before it could begin by the Pridosi.

Nomads

Leaders of the two nomadic or formerly nomadic groups of the Protectorate, the Cizimeneans and the Pridosi.

Indai

Stance: Mihalite
Age: Unrecorded, early 30s

Indai is the current chief of the Magiak, the most traditional of all the Cizimenean tribes. The Bowist leader of a Mihalite tribe, Indai shows more loyalty to the Protectorate (the Lord Protector of which is Magiak) than most, but is usually powerless to circumstances. Despite being the first major figure in the Protectorate to become aware of the Pridosi threat, he was too faithful in the Protectorati system to take much action himself and was eventually forced into an alliance with the Pridosi and Yula-Ashur.

Yula-Ashur

Stance: Independent
Age: Unrecorded, mid 30s

Yula-Ashur is the Yula (war-chief) of the Pridosi confederation. Appointed to deal with growing violence between the Pridosi and surrounding nomads, he elected to travel further north and attempt to settle in the more fertile lands of Kretaza. Yula-Ashur is a skilled general who extensively uses spies to assess his enemies, and goads opponents into fighting outnumbered battles with other forms of espionage, but is prone to overconfidence. He successfully secured the peaceful settlement of the Pridosi in Kretaza, though on Kretazan terms, at the end of the Pridosi invasion.

László

Stance: Neutral
Age: 34

László 'the Wake' is the chief of the largest Cizimenean tribe, the Lodans. Among the Lodans, who are only semi-nomadic, the position of chief is hereditary and so László gained the position on the death of his father five years ago. László's primary aims involve increasing the political prominence of the Lodans to the detriment of their main rivals, the Magiak - which, despite its smaller size, is the most famous of the Cizimenean tribes. He resents the fact that the Lord Protector is Magiak, but has no issue with the Protectorati system of government as it provides his tribe with a great deal of autonomy. In religious matters, László is a spirit worshipper (as is the Lodan tradition), but adheres to Bowist expectations outside Cizimene.

Thanks for alerting me to the edit button. And you did send a telegram, I have seen. Problem is, you went it while I slept and overnight it reset. Sorry for the inconvenience of that, could you send it again?
Also something unrelated, for my furniture restoration thingy, I’m ranked 25,000. I like that

Which telegram are you looking for? Also, you can turn off recruitment telegrams by going to page=tgsettings and hitting "Block All" under recruitment.

It was the last telegram you sent me, I’m pretty sure it was after I asked for how to get a space on the map so I think it would be about that.
