Here is another song. Not the happiest, but brilliant nonetheless

Christmas 1925 by Celtic Thunder

King of Castille (1221-1284)

Oh yes, beautiful indeed. Very nice vocals. I can see in my mind the movie scene that this could be playing over.

So Austin Ice Bats

Do you have a favorite Christmas Carol?

GoodKingWenceslas wrote:So Austin Ice Bats

The city of Austin has a famous bat population. During certain times of year, they apparently flock along the river and under the major bridge. It's supposed to be quite a sight. I was in the city, for a time, but my arrival was just weeks after their appearances ended for the year, and I left the city after a few months.

Funny that they named a hockey team after them. Appropriate, but funny.

To each his own, but isn't Texas a bit hot for ice hockey ?

Hello, yes I do. The First Noel.

You are correct. My nation is named after the hockey team.

Saint-Roque wrote:What's your favourite Christmas Carol ?

“O Come All Ye Faithful”

Which is pretty funny because I'm not particularly 'faithful'; in the sense of being religious.

Hear, hear!

Now there's a professional hockey team in Las Vegas, a city in a desert...quite disgraceful, if you ask me.

If I had my way, hockey teams would permitted only to cities that experience snow...maybe even requiring that their lakes freeze. Of course, with climate change and the warming globe, this may not be feasible in the future :/

How dare you discriminate against warmer environments! I'll have you know, I can remember three separate occasions where it snowed in Las Vegas.

Sounds like somebody isn't getting an invite to the new "League for the Promulgation of the Recognition of the Supremacy of Colder Climates" that I am starting... :P

Supremacy of colder climates...where do I sign ? ;)
Maybe many of you don't remember what happened in the Feb.2014 Winter Olympics. In Sochi, Southern Russia. Temperatures reached a staggering 18 degrees Celsius.
That's the average temperature in Autumn in Southwest Europe.
How was that Winter ?
It was ridiculous. Like playing beach football in Antarctica.

Saint-Roque wrote:Like playing beach football in Antarctica.

One of my real life regrets is not going to Antarctica. I'd started a new job, and a corporate email came round asking if anyone wanted to spend 6 months in Antarctica. It was a volunteer job, cleaning up the rubbish that previous Antarctic expeditions had left behind. I'd been in the job less than three months, so it seemed kind of wrong to try and head off so soon. I also worried if I'd be able to carry 6 months worth of cigarettes with me...
I don't see that I'll be able to get an opportunity like that again. Which creates a dilemma. If a corporate email comes round, asking if I want to try time travel, do I go back and slap myself for my previous stupidity, or do I do something else instead?

It seems unlikely that a corporation would offer to let you travel back in time just to slap yourself. But that doesn't mean you can't try.

You'd be amazed what Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated let you do.

Earthbound immortal squad

I had to check that company name to make sure it was was I thought it was. I only ever watched one episode and I don't think I'll forget it anytime soon. :)

Oh wow, that's a real shame. I've certainly known the feeling of passing on an opportunity because it came at an inopportune time, and later regretting it. Life is hard...

I was just discussing Antarctica in another region, so I'll pass on some links regarding Antarctic "banknotes." Obviously, there's no actual money being issued from the continent, but the research station there sells these collectible notes as souvenirs in order to raise funds:

I think they're quite beautiful.

Indeed they are. And a great fundraising idea too, for an amazing project. A continent ran by an international treaty, where there is no politics, no national rivalries, there's cooperation and concern for the higher values of Science.

That's a really good point, and a nice sentiment. Perhaps Christmas should pack everything up and move to the South Pole..?

Just flying thru for now; we'll be back in December.

That's such a great moment from The Muppets, hadn't seen it before. I love the kind of rowdy jumble it becomes.

That's a cool version of the song. I love those folk songs that sound especially old and traditional. This one, in particular, puts me in mind of the original "The Wicker Man" film. A bit eerie...

I hadn't heard of "souling" before:

dialect, historical British
"The action, practice, or ritual of going about asking for donations of food, etc., traditionally on the eve of All Souls' Day."

I guess it's more or less the same as "mumming," which is what I'd heard it called.
