That is indeed sad, it is one of the oldest churches in the world and it even has a book and movie names after it. It is a true gem

Ahh, the hunchback of Notre Dame.
But if you look on the bright side, some rib-tickling memes will come out of it.
Here:
WHO WOULD WIN?
A cathedral that survived bombings in WW2

One sparky boi
My Opinion
Not to be insensitive regarding the Notre Dame fire, but it is only a building. I guess it is a shame that something that survived for so long went down like that but it is basically the same as dying: death is inevitable and depending on your own choices and occasionally the stupidity of others it could end sooner than you would like, which is what happened at this cathedral. To (indirectly) quote the bible: everything comes to an end.
You could compare this to one of your favourite celebrities dying. It is a tragedy and you may feel it for a while but you must accept that they wont come back. This building, however, will almost certainly be rebuilt and if nobody witnessed the fire and there were no articles about it you would have no idea it was a replica.
I guess what I'm saying is, you are entitled to feel sad about it, but it is only a building and it will come back.
Sorry again if this is unnecessarily harsh, it is only my opinion. You are welcome to challenge it, in fact, I would prefer someone to challenge my views. And feel no pressure to feel what I feel, (again) this is only my thoughts on the topic.
Also Barlomia, the italic was kind of a joke (hence why it was in italics).

Well, it does say that multiple times, in different wordings obviously. You could say that the building is an "earthly possession" too.
Does anyone else think that it is more than a coincidence that in the Hunchback of Notre Dame cartoon, the church burns down?
Whatever. I'm not gonna say what I really want to say because I feel like I am on the edge of being banned/ejected/reported to mods. It seems everyone is overly sensitive about something as trivial as this so I will push no further.
Definitely not to be joked about
I believe that there is more to this than when a famous person dies. I would instead compare this tragedy to something like 9/11 or the fall of Constantinople. It's like seeing something that is seemingly eternal crumble right before your eyes, not to mention that the archives, art and architecture are extremely influential to our understanding of the time period. It also, in the eyes of many, is a symbol of not only French but Western civilization as a whole and for many like myself on the political right, we see this as a sad reminder of what is happening in Europe and in other Western countries where we feel like our entire culture is attempting to be removed by our own governments in the name of "inclusiveness". Basically, there is much more to this than a building burning down which is why it is monumental to many.
Why am I grieving over the situation of Notre Dame.
It’s a religious symbol. Yes, I’m not Christian but it’s very important to Christians and it even held priceless artifacts like the Crown of Thorns etc. I would be devastated if the Kabah or the Prophets’s Mosque were destroyed as those are my main religious buildings.
Also, Notre Dame was also a symbol of France, a symbol of the French people. It holds much significance such as the Statue of Liberty for me. The building also has great historical significance and it’s beauty was amazing.
I know that it might be classified as a worldly possession and it is. Just like anything here, which includes our lives cause we will all die. However, despite that, it’s our duty to take care of the earth, and preserve the things we have built as long as it’s not for an immoral cause, or not beneficial to anyone and will cause harm. As long as we remain humble, patient, and kind as a society, and not into a terrible chaotic state, we should focus on keeping our history alive too.

Not really I'm around just not posting
I see this tragedy more from the side of religiousness. (As you know Liam) I am a Catholic myself, and Notre Dame Cathedral is arguably like the 4th most notable/important location in the Roman Catholic Church. St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Jerusalem, and Rome being the others. To Patek phillippe's point, it is just a building, and it will be rebuilt. The Holy See and the Pontifical Commission has already put aside millions of dollars to the reconstruction, plus the French government is doing the same. However, it is more of a tragedy to see that the artwork, religious artifacts, Holy relics, and almost 900 years of archival history, not only of the Catholic Church but of Paris, to go up in smoke, or damaged beyond repair. We were blessed with the fact that a lot of things were actually saved because it was locked away in the vault, and we should all be thankful for that.
Also, thank you for the sympathies Scholars of diplomacy. You obviously have a very good understanding of the importance of this place to the Catholic/Christian faith, and your tact and knowledge has not gone unnoticed.
