Sail nation travellers

Hello, I'm a Nationstates nomad, wandering around and seeing the world, reviewing particular aspects of regions for The Embassy's 🌍 TourAdvisor project (from the viewpoint of a visitor/traveller). I'm also collecting information and notes about my travels in a dispatch:

A NationStates Nomad's Notebook

by Sail nation travellers

The Notebook of a Nationstates Nomad
Why I'm doing this/background information
I was thinking how easy it is to think of a 'perfect region', then never find one. I'm happy with my main Sail nation in Lorania and my puppet Prussian sail nation in Thaecia, but it can be a struggle to find these regions. I also wandered about whether nations were nomads, not settling anywhere for too long. Turns out, after a quick search, a very small community does. Finally, I posted on the NS forums about this and was directed to the 🌍 TourAdvisor project. I also thought that learning and writing about the NS community would be a nice experience and hopefully interesting for others to see. Even better, I could use this puppet for some card farming, as I don't want to set up a proper card farm but also want to try and gain more cards.

Personal Policies of Mine
  • I don't join regional discords/forums. Personally, I've never been a fan of regional forums and discords for various reasons (especially when regions are so centered on them that it is easy to forget that the region is supposed to be focused on NS), but I'm definitely not joining any when I'm not going to be in the region for long, which brings me on to

  • I only stay in a region for 4-10 days. No matter what the region, unless I'm ejected, I stay for about that amount of time. If I like the region so much that I want to stay, I'll simply make a puppet or move an existing nation there

  • I follow the 🌍 TourAdvisor guidelines, that is not reviewing a region that I'm a regional officer in, or a region where I've fallen out with someone and making sure I review regions as a visitor, not as a resident, Generally, I won't move to a region where I already have another nation.

  • I won't visit regions classed as Minuscule, Jump Points, regions that have recently been raided or are under occupation, puppet farms (occasionally I might visit more general puppet storage regions) etc.

Refugia
(22/5/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

Refugia is good for eco-minded players to chat with others about such matters, but can be a bit quiet at times. Relatively enjoyable visit, although not perfect.

Was quiet and conversation rarely got further beyond welcomes and issue-based discussion. After a quick look at activity,
I found that the most active nations were mainly answering issues, and some didn't extend far beyond logging in every few days, or were simply inactive.

New West Indies
(29/5/2020)

After the controversy, I decided not to leave a review. I was informed by one of their government officials that Chief editor was a puppet of a nation who was spamming and trolling them, alongside the bad review. I was going to review their WFE, but I was not impressed with their decision to cease diplomatic relations with The Embassy

RMB focused on RP, but relatively friendly when I talked with them OOC. We had a slight problem when Chief editor, who was trying to help me with my travels, left a bad review of the region not only on The Embassy's RMB but New West Indies' RMB, also without a category. Oops. This also resulted in The Embassy's embassy with New West Indies being closed. The nation which caused this controversy was eventually warned by the NS moderators and I decided to leave the region early, with a note of caution to others visiting the region (only caution, no more), as well as asking Chief editor to stop 'helping' me. A very, well lets say, eventful, stay.

Regionless
(2/6/2020)

📖 WFE
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

While not the most functional, Regionless's WFE is very colourful and provides all the information that one might need to know about the region. Those who wish to visit longer will find themselves in a welcoming, peaceful enviroment. Also a great stop for nomads/tr avellers wishing for some respite on their long journeys.

Was welcoming, yet remarkably quiet. Not much regional activity at all happened while I was there. It was good respite from the busyness and drama I'd experienced previously.

The Great Monarchical Nations(09/06/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚💚💚 (5)

The Great Monarchical Nations has a very active, small community who are willing to involve visitors in their chatting. Most discussions are based around NS, with a mix of roleplay, issue/statistic based and WA discussions on the RMB. The government seemed a little confused when I asked them what the focus of the region is when I asked, but I don't see that as a problem for visitors and travellers. Importantly, they do allow non-monarchical nations into the region, so no worries there. A visit is highly recommended.

Was very active for a region of that size and discussion was varied, although focusing on NS. I felt comfortable including myself in conversation (although to a limited extent). I noticed an oddity though, there was a focus on both roleplay and issues, which is fine, but uncommon. After noticing WA conversation, I asked what the focus of the region was (RP, issues, gameplay etc), and got a very unclear response. But this wasn't a problem, and I enjoyed my stay, even staying a day longer than I usually would.

Eastern Europe (17/06/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

A welcoming, friendly community that is open to visitors. Nations are advised to change one of their stats for two weeks (after a regional vote), I don't know whether travellers are exempt from this, but I did try to reduce crime just to be safe. What really made this region good for me is that I was included in regional conversation just like anyone else.

Although not perfect, I did enjoy my stay. I was asked about how I review regions, which did through me as I usually just decide based upon how welcomed and included I felt (for community reviews). I was able to help them when they had a debate about a IC meeting that they were having and they listened to me. It wasn't the most amazing of stays, but I was content throughout the week I was there.

New World Union(24/06/2020)

📖 WFE
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

Visitors to the New World Union will find a functional and relatively good-looking WFE. The only problem with it is that it isn't updated regularly. Outside of the WFE are endless RP posts which some travellers may enjoy reading and others may not. During my visit, I couldn't find an appropriate moment to join in any conversation and it almost felt like the region was full of people who had been there for a while and were experienced RPers. While I didn't get much of a welcome, they did accept me being in the region. Visit if you like this type of region.

Wow my reviews are getting long, I'd better shorten them a bit soon. The region was very RP-heavy, which I hadn't noticed when looking at the region before moving there. I'm not into RP and tend to find mega-long RP posts really boring to read so this wasn't an ideal region for me to visit. I hoped that there would be more general conversation, but there was little and I never felt like I could join in the conversation, or start a new one. I was largely ignored upon arriving, aside from being told that who I could contact when I wanted to ask a question. Eventually decided to simply move on.

I felt insulted to log on the evening I after I left the region to see the nations of this region ranting on about how unfair my review was, after one of them posted my review in their region (mentioning me in their post). They went on about how I made no effort to chat, how the review must have not been thought and 'spiraled into madness' and asking each other what I wanted them to do with the WFE. Firstly, the review was 3/5. As much as modern society wants to tell you, 3/5 is not bad at all. 3/5 is just ok, good for some but some parts could be better/some travellers wouldn't want to visit. Secondly, I wasn't able to chat for a few reasons. That week I was standing in an election on one of my other puppets, so I was mainly focusing on that instead of being constantly on this nation. I also found no appropriate point to join in a conversation as it was constant long RP posts almost all the time I was there. I couldn't think of anything to start a conversation throughout my visit. And one person told me to contact a certain nation if I had any questions rather than say 'just ask here', which seemed a bit like they didn't want me to intrude on their RP. The review was properly thought out and in the short time I've been doing this, I've seen much more harsh reviews than this one.

The main problem is that no-one understands the purpose of TourAdvisor. TourAdvisor is about showing the NS world what regions are good to visit or even just look at, rather than a review of how regions are run, what it's like to stay permanently in a region etc. This is now the second large RP region where I've had this problem. Both here and New West Indies had a community that was focused on discord rather than on-site, had overwhelmingly long RP posts and almost nothing else on their RMBs, were completely unaccommodating of travellers and overreacted to the slightest of criticism. I just had to get this out (if you are from the New World Union, take a look at yourselves first if you are about to post about me again).

There was later a post in the region saying how a did provide good feedback.

United League of Nations(30/06/2020)

🗳️ Government
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

While not super-active, the United League of Nations is steeped in history. Whether your a traveller wishing to rest for a few days or if you are interested in NS history, reading the dispatches, old RMB posts and the NS Wiki page about the region is a really interesting experience. The region is over 15 years old and has been refounded seven times!

The region has some activity, but not much. I was able to have a quick look at the region's history and have a few interactions with the delegate. Nothing amazing, but a nice stay nonetheless.

A Nomadic Hut(05/07/2020)

Travel Break

Took a break while I faced election in Lorania on my main. Also I was starting to struggle with finding regions to move to, so I decided to spend this time forming a new method about how I chose regions to move to. The main problem was I spent a lot of time looking for regions, sometimes with little success. Another problem is that while there are over 20,000 regions, most have very few nations, a lot are puppet storage for one person and most regions are basically 'dead', with barely any RMB activity over the past few months. From what I could see, there is no way to measure RMB activity at all.

I ultimately decided on a system of picking a random page on the regions tag search, with certain tags excluded to prevent regions that I don't want to go to (ones that are two small, password-protected etc)

Region Name (19/07/2020)

👫Community
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Despite having a name that one might not consider too serious, Region Name has a very active community. It has a fast-paced RP, but posts are short, so while some hardcore RPers might not enjoy following these posts while visiting, non-RPers like me (or even more casual RPers) will find it much easier to follow what's happening in the region's RP. A relatively enjoyable visit.

A nice region, although I didn't get much response when I tried to chat. Nevertheless, enjoyed staying in the region and watching the happenings. The difficulty I had this time is that I've been spending more time focusing on my other two nations, as they now both have important government positions in other regions, leaving me less time to focus on my travels, meaning that this has almost become a nation that I simply log into everyday for a few minutes, rather than work on this dispatch or interact within a region.

The Moonlight Battle Born(27/07/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

If I could give this review 3.5 stars, I would, but I'll give it a three. The region is fairly new, and is also welcoming and willing to answer questions that any visitor may have. The amount of activity depends on what you're used to, you won't find dozens of RMB posts overnight, but the RMB isn't too inactive. Conversation didn't go that far though.

Nothing really notable here, just a medium-sized new-ish region with mainly new nations in it. Apparently most stuff happens on discord, but I don't know how much as I didn't join it. Relatively little activity but I've seen less before.

Conch Kingdom(03/08/2020)

🎟️ Activities
💚💚💚💚💚 (5)

Conch Kingdom is a very large region, but is also very active and very inclusive to visitors and travellers. I was given a very nice welcome, all my questions I had were answered, and notable members of the region were very supportive of TourAdvisor and made sure I was enjoying my visit. In terms of activities, Conch Kingdom has 'Question of the Day', which encouraged lots of interesting discussions on the RMB. The region also provided news updates in the form of a dispatch, which was an interesting read. A must-visit for the travellers and wanderers of NationStates!

Possibly one of the most inclusive regions yet, members of Conch Kingdom checked whether I was enjoying my time there, gave me dispatches to read and included me in activities. The members of the government were always willing to answer my questions as well.

Democritus(09/08/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Democritus is a small, yet very active region that mixes RP and general chat in a purely onsite mix. Most discussion during my stay was about US politics, which is a popular NS topic right now. I would frequently wake up to over 100 messages, which I found nice, but that got tiring after a few days, though for some residents of larger regions that would be normal. Native residents listened to what I had to say and responded, which is always nice. A region that is certainly worth a look for travellers.

Was given a lengthy post about how the region had become a success, through RP and general discussion. As of writing this, the US presidential election is only a few months away, so US politics was a big debate in the region, so as I'm from the UK I decided to largely stay out of the discussion. Sadly I've had to focus on my other two nations recently as there is an election in Thaecia and Lorania has had an activity spike, and I've also been away IRL, so I've had little time to focus on this nation.

Eurth(17/08/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Eurth's community, while largely based on regional forums, is friendly and willing to chat on the RMB. The region is full of history dating back to before RMBs were kept (while the residents were in a different region). The region is really accepting of visitors, and several residents are very friendly and talkative!

The region was quiet due to activity being mainly on it's forums, but I had some nice conversation with a few residents and they told me about the region's history. A good visit, not the best ever but still nice.

The Place(25/08/2020)

📖 WFE
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

The Place's WFE contains useful links to pages such as the region's rules and the official NS rules, as well as some information. It also is very colourful and looks quite nice, but could be a bit better and updated more frequently. The region has a lot of friendly, casual residents as well.

Had some enjoyable conversations with residents, but a bit quiet. Altogether not too bad.

Hive(02/09/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

Hive is well, a hive of activity!! I logged on each day to find 2-3 pages of RMB posts, focusing on RP, regional management and more! What disappointed me though is how members of the region didn't make an effort to chat with me on the RMB, although this could be because I'm a bit busy on NS and IRL right now, so I might re-visit at some point.

When I did try to interact with residents, I was largely ignored, although this could be because I'm busy in real life and on NS at the time of writing, so travelling is not a priority. I might revisit in the future.

Warzone Sandbox (9/9/2020)

📖 WFE
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Warzone Sandbox's WFE is notable for having so many sand-related jokes or references, which is at a comedic level. The region is oddly peaceful and quiet, but always has a threat of being raided, so please don't travel there with your WA nation unless if you intend on staying for an extended period of time. Note that the WFE might change if the region is raided.

Very nice region, although quieter than what I'd usually like. First Warzone I've ever visited.

Bluecrown Keep(19/9/2020)

👫 Community
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Bluecrown Keep is a very active and welcoming region, although the levels of activity can be a bit too much for those who are used to quieter regions. The residents are really nice though, and I would still recommend visiting.

Currently having some big problems with activity. Maybe being in two political positions, running a newspaper, travelling NS and having a life outside of NS is too much? I really do need to log into this nation more often.

ATOMIC(26/9/2020)

N/A, Temporary residence for N-Day

Moved there for N-Day, used the puppet during the event. Spent an extra week in region while other puppets were sorted out.

The Democratika(5/10/2020)

📖 WFE
💚💚💚🖤🖤 (3)

The Democratika's WFE is simple, colourful and informative. Links to various important documents and resources are included. The region is fairly quiet, but warm and welcoming, and is altogether an alright region to visit.

Region was very quiet, I was becoming very busy with other nations by this point, so struggling to keep up with everything happening on NS.

Alnobia(13/10/2020)

🗳️ Government
💚💚💚💚🖤 (4)

Albonia is an active fun region, with a nice active government, that includes every WA nation in the region. It is a nice place to visit, although there is little that is extraordinarily special about the region.

I need a break. This puppet is going into puppet storage, effective almost immediately.

Chicken overlords

N/A Puppet storage, nation lays dormant

A combination of less time on NS and becoming tired of travelling, decided to put the nation into puppet storage.

Christmas(25/12/2020)

N/A

Moved nation into region for the latter part of the Christmas period. Considering pausing TourAdvisor reviews indefinitely.

Notable Events

22/5/2020: After a couple of weeks of planning, I started my travels.

1/6/2020: First Mentioned in The Cable

2/6/2020: The Chief editor/New West Indies incident (explained more in depth above)

19/7/2020: Changed method of deciding how to move between regions from trying to find them, to picking a random page in a list of regions (excluding puppet storage, password-protected etc)

Observations about the NS community as a whole

  • The NS community can be impulsive, over-reactive and sometimes trying to see all of what has happened can be difficult. It's no surprise, that like any online community, NS has people who react weirdly, such as password-protecting the region in response to one nation. Also, seeing all the evidence of something can take time sometimes.

  • Smaller, regional communities can be very quiet, with most nations not talking to each other on their RMBs and focusing on either issues or simply logging in occasionally. There are a lot of regions with very little activity and a few old nations.

  • While the core of the NS community focuses on R/D, regional politics, the WA and RP, a lot of nations focus mostly on issues. Discussion about issues mainly centres in smaller regions.

  • Some regions have RP-centred communities with page-long post and sometimes a lack of understanding of the NS world outside RP from some nations inside these regions (not all, just more than usual). Most non-RP activity is on discord, so a lot of players might be excluded from parts of these communities.

Read dispatch

Now this region isn't as active as most region's I visit, but I've heard great things about here, so this should be fun. Just as a note, I won't be joining the discord or forum as I'll only be here for a few days.

👫 Community

Bluecrown Keep is a very active and welcoming region, although the levels of activity can be a bit too much for those who are used to quieter regions. The residents are really nice though, and I would still recommend visiting.

Currently having some big problems with activity. Maybe being in two political positions, running a newspaper, travelling NS and having a life outside of NS is too much? I really do need to log into this nation more often.

ATOMIC(26/9/2020)

Now this region isn't as active as most region's I visit, but I've heard great things about here, so this should be fun. Just as a note, I won't be joining the discord or forum as I'll only be here for a few days.

Hello and welcome to Eurth, Sail nation travellers!

I appreciate your reasons for not joining our region or our Discord server, but certainly the latter is where most of our activity takes place.

We can definitely answer any questions that you might have here, though! We'll try to give you an idea of what life is like on Eurth.

I won't be able to do any replies promptly, though - I'm supposed to be asleep but noisy neighbours are keeping me up.

So this region was founded by members of Europa, I think?

Is there anything else interesting about this region's history?

Anyway sounds good. I've heard of other travellers who have visited here before, and they look like they've enjoyed here.

That's correct - the old region was closed down by the person who held the founder's account. He was unhappy with the fact we weren't bowing to his demands on how to run our community, something that he had not been involved in for years. It got a bit ugly and was a sad end to a long lived region and community.

However, we bounced back a lot stronger and have been able to overcome that somewhat unfortunate start. It is in the past now.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "interesting" :P We've always had a busy roleplay community, usually at the national level, and this has made great stories. A handful of us have been around since the start of the region, or just after. I've been in Europa and Eurth since January 2005.

We try to be as welcoming as we can, to either visitors, travellers such as yourself or people who are looking to make a home here on Eurth.

And it's always good to see a new face!

👋 Hello there Sail nation travellers. Glad to make your acquaintance. How are you doing today?

Thank you for your deep and complete introduction. Your nomad's notebook certainly reads like a very familiar source of travel-related information. With an interesting evaluation of the region, WFE and activities going on. Very impressive. I like the layout as well. In the past I had a stab at creating my own NS theme, to fix some minor inconsistencies in the design. https://userstyles.org/styles/10744/better-nationstates-nationstates-net

During the years we've have several world-wise wanderers arrive on our shores. Only little while ago in July of this year, we were also blessed with a visit by some other travellers. The good people of the Travelling Region. First to arrive was Migrating Geese, followed by a flock of wholly friendly people. If you have some time to read, there's an interview where you can read more about it.

Published July 2020

In the first week of July, our region received a surprise visit from the Travelling Region. When I say "surprise", it was actually only a surprise for us. Because for the travellers, Eurth was on their planned itinerary for visiting all regions from Z to A to 0 (zero). Their efforts were recognised by the World Assembly in Security Council Resolution #186 Commending the Travelling Region. First to arrive was a flock of Migrating Geese. After pitching their tent and a wild night at the bar, we sat down with one of our guests for a friendly Q&A.

Members of the Travelling Region visit all NationStates regions from Z to A to 0 (zero).

Orioni — Honk honk and a quackity quacking day to you. Please help us get to know you. Can you tell us something about yourself?

Migrating Geese — I can tell you about the geese, but not about my personal self. Actually, the geese is not my first nation. I've been in NS for over 16 years. I am female, which I think makes me a minority.

What inspired you to visit all NationStates regions from Z to A?

One of my first nations was Happy wanderers. It ceased to exist way back in 2008. I used it to travel randomly. It was such fun that I created the Migrating Geese to continue my travels. But doing the same sort of random traveling seemed too redundant. So I figured since actual geese migrated south, we'd go from Z to A.

What has the experience been like so far in other regions you have travelled to and from?

We have a forum which has some of our experiences on it: Linktravellingregion.proboards.com One thing I hate is to fly over a region and get banned for it. We keep a record now of those mishaps. I was a solo traveler until I reached the W's and hit Wyndia. That is when SkodaTruck Drivers joined me. We were a happy couple for a long time.

Along the way, we got a bunch of nations that wanted to come with us -- so many that some regions got nervous and thought they were being invaded. Now we have had to make very, very stringent Linkrequirements to join our group, which can be viewed in our forum.

Before the mods were aware of us, Skoda actually got nuked in The Kingdom of Burgundy for stopping in and wishing them a Merry Christmas. The Skoda traveling with us now is his puppet. Now the mods know that we're a traveling region and pretty much leave us alone.

How exciting! What about hospitality? Are players generally accepting of temporary guests?

Most regions are hospitable. Some know us from before. Some get a boost in membership and interest. I always TG the founder when we arrive to let him know who we are and ask him to notify me if we're not welcome so that we can move along. If you see our list of disgraced nations in our WFE in Travelling Region you can see that this doesn't always work.

There are several travellers and wanderers in NationStates. Have you run into any of them?

Yes! So many nations are out there sampling NS. Our home region often attracts them in between travels. One nation traveling with us now is an old solo migrant who decided to join us.

Are there any plans for creating a NationStates travel guide?

We hadn't thought about a travel guide. But we do keep a list in our home region of regions which have been above and beyond interesting and friendly.

Last question. Do you have any advice for other players who may be inspired by your travels?

My advice is simply to enjoy yourself. And stop in our home region to introduce yourself.

Thank you for your time. It's been a great pleasure to host this friendly flock of world-wise travellers here in Eurth. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did. You are, of course, welcome to stay as long as you like. And feel free to re-visit at any moment. Please accept this artistic impression as a sign of our appreciation.

Now, to comment on some of your own remarks. I see that dear Tagmatium has already provided plenty of enlightenment.

> Now this region isn't as active as most region's I visit, but I've heard great things about here, so this should be fun.

True. From an outsider's point of view, looking only at the RMB, there seems to be little activity on the RMB. This might be legacy behaviour of an old region. Back in 2004 the RMB would only display the last 10 posts. Everything older would get erased. Since we had a lot to say to each other, an off-site forum was established quite quickly. It evolved throughout the years but all of the history is still preserved. Some other people prefer to use the NS forums. But they probably haven't experienced the Jolt forums, move to NS2, and subsequent erasure of old stories. 🤞 We've never had that happen.

> Just as a note, I won't be joining the discord or forum as I'll only be here for a few days.

That's quite alright. Certainly no obligation. I can imagine a traveller like yourself have no need to create accounts for every region they visit. We're happy to chat on the RMB.

> So this region was founded by members of Europa, I think?

Correct. Originally most of us resided in Europa. That region still exists, although everyone is still on the ban list. This region (Eurth) was a placeholder for our RP stories. Having the region allowed us to use it in RP without stepping on anyone's toes.

> Is there anything else interesting about this region's history?

Oh boy that's a tough one... We've done so much together that I'm not sure where to start. What I will say is most visitors are pleasantly surprised this community has been going for so long. The second most heard comment is about the stories and maps we make for our RP. We have quite a number of writers, designers and even developers among us who regularly blow us away with the quality of their creations. In a broader sense we're always busy with community activities, story polls and organising games (ex. EurthCraft). When there's a NS game going on (e.g. zombies or nukes) we also join in on the fun and it can become quite competitive. Personally, I like the fact even thought we're spread across the globe, everyone knows one another for so many years now this has become a "third place" with its own community feeling and inside jokes (ex. cabbage, Vertibirdman, "I made another nation"). For a more official history, there's always the (slightly outdated) hitchhiker's guide:

You step off the plane, and a fresh breeze hits you in the face. Greetings esteemed leader of your glorious and well-respected nation! A driver is waiting to take you to your embassy. But first...

If you haven't already heard this from the Delegate, other leaders on the RMB, or elsewhere: Welcome to Eurth!

This pristine region was established in January 2004, relatively short after the creation of NationStates. That makes us one of those rare ancient regions. Originally, the region is named after the real-world continent of Europa (Linksee Wikipedia). In April 2019 an April Fools' Day joke by one person nudged us to move to this secondary location of Eurth.

As a community, we are committed to freedom and personal choice. Here is the place to be part of this venture, Project Eurth. In many ways, the people who come to Eurth hold those values dear. Even thought we're spread across the globe, everyone knows one another for so many years now this has become a "third place"

Now that you have arrived in Eurth, let met outline some of the best reason to stay.

  1. We are an open and accepting community. A diversity of political views are welcomed here, as long as such views are in accordance with NationStates' rules.

  2. We are one of the oldest regions in NationStates. This region has seen many nation rise and fall while creating a lasting legacy. Stay and become part of a legacy that stretches back all the way to the foundation of NationStates!

  3. Eurth remains neutral. While other regions gladly join the interregional cat-and-mouse game of crashing and defending, we prefer to build a lasting legacy. Our peace and neutrality are guarded and guaranteed by our founder Planet Eurth.

Since you're reading this, we'll assume you are convinced to stay in Eurth. To prevent your inbox from overflowing you can turn off recruitment telegrams in the future, just go to this page and disable recruitment telegrams settings.

2 Getting started in Eurth

Satellite image of our planet, Earth / Eurth / Alemi, taken by EOSSAT in 2017.
2.1 Join the Community

The LinkRegional Forum of Eurth is where most of our business is conducted. To gain access to it and get involved you will need to apply for membership. To do so, you will have to Linkregister for Membership. After you have submitted your application, you may want to Linkstart a new thread to introduce yourself.

The Linkregional Discord is another area for all of us to chat, meet up, share jokes, and whatnot. We usually have at least a handful of member online, up to circa 50 members in total, and it is a good way to make friends in Eurth. The Discord is also used to spread news, important content, and information to the general public fastest, so it is a great way to stay informed of what is going on at all times. Link to Discord: LinkClick Here!

2.2 Crafting your nation
Once you have figured your way around the Forum, you should create some standard RP topics to help shape your nation. We recommend that you start by publishing both a Linknational factbook and a Linknews agency. Look to others for inspiration.

Once you are active in our regional roleplay, you will qualify for Linka place on the Map of Eurth. The most effective way of having your application approved is by following the simple rules as explained in the applications topic. The questions will help is decide where you would most enjoy establishing your nation.

2.3 Create your role-play story
In a game revolving around nations, the more realistic your nation the more fun you will have. LinkLook at the factbooks of other nations. You can also look at the Wikipedia articles of Real Life nations to get yourself started. Once you have something put together you may want to post it for everyone to see. Another good starting point is Linkcreating a news agency that publishes recent happenings in your nation. Unsure how to write a news article? Follow this guide on how to write an RP news post. Should the unfortunate event arrive of conflict and warfare, here are some articles for your consideration.

2.4 Join the NationStates World Assembly and endorse the World Assembly Delegate

Go to the World Assembly page and join the World Assembly (WA). The WA is an international organisation, similar to real life international organisations, that passes international laws, restrictions, and other legislation. Being a part of the WA will help you get involved in the international community and significantly improve your NationStates experience. To join the WA, simply click the "Apply to Join" button at the top of the page, and check your email for an approval letter. After you have joined the WA, remember to go to the WA Delegate's nation page, and give them your endorsement. Your endorsement will give the Delegate more votes in the WA, and therefore help Eurth be more influential in the World Assembly when voting on resolutions in the General Assembly and Security Council. This also allows you to vote in the WA on all resolutions as well as propose resolutions to the WA.

2.5 Foreign relations
Embassy requests should always be preceded by a telegram or RMB message. Random offers to exchange embassies without any context or explanation will be ignored.

Regional travellers are extremely welcome. In the past we've had some wonderful experiences with this concept. You don't have to believe me. Just read the interviews with Chatalhoyuk, A Flying Turtle, or Migrating Geese. In 2020 Eurth was rated as a "favorite region".

4 History of Eurth

4.1 Genesis (early 2004)
Early days for Europa. The first light appeared on January 9th, 2004. The Europa Empire decided to (re)found Europa in his own image. And he saw that it was good. Every year we celebrate this period with some nice regional festivities. Many other first creations happened in this period. Four months later Linkthe regional forum was created. Back then the RMB didn't hold more than 10 posts, so everyone was happy to have a dedicated place to continue their conversations. Everything older would get erased. Since we had a lot to say to each other, an off-site forum was established quite quickly. It evolved throughout the years but all of the history is still preserved. Some other people prefer to use the NS forums. But they probably haven't experienced the Jolt forums (2006-2010), creation of NationStates 2, and the subsequent implosion and erasure of old stories. 🤞 We've never had that happen.

4.2 Golden Age (mid 2004 to 2008)
We experienced a first golden age between 2004-2008. A regional government was formed, organised around our LinkCitizen Plaza. A place for everyone to spill their guts regarding the policy of the government, for open discussions and comments. Seasonal elections were held for the Senator. There were also 3 ministries: internal affairs, foreign affairs, and defence (TEA: The Europa Army).

International relations were established across the Nationverse. Built along the Hermes Avenue are the embassies of our strong allies, and the consulates of our honourable friends. This proved Linkthe best place to talk to foreigners, just as long as you don't feed them. Our old friend Thel D'Ran of Lemuria even included us Linkin his regional rankings.

This period of high activity led to a natural influx of new members, pushing us towards 300 players. These were good times. Much of this OOC and IC history Linkis preserved in our archived blog The Europan Times.

4.3 Middle Ages (2009 to 2014)
Every Golden Age like that is usually followed by a less spectacular silver age. In Europa, this period is described by some as the "Great Lull". While our activity did not completely come to a standstill, it did slow down when compared to the previous period. The influx of new nations was less than before. This period also corresponds with the steep rise of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Perhaps that's where everyone spent their days? And don't forget about real-life, the harsh mistress that stole away many a writer from our midsts.

4.4 Renaissance (2015 to April 2019)
A new spark triggered the light for our Renaissance period. An actual LinkProject Renaissance led us down a five-year path of rejuvenation. This saw both the arrival of new creative spirits as well as the return of many classic colleagues. We cleaned up our act, replaced IRC with Discord (May 3rd, 2017), merged with UBPSSIF (May 30th, 2017), upgraded our forums (September 23rd, 2017), established a Wiki (January 2018) and stepped up our roleplay game. These years showed to be an excellent time for our growing community.

We're always busy with community activities (NOTM), story polls and organising games (ex. EurthCraft). Most visitors are pleasantly surprised this community has been going for so long. The second most heard comment is about the stories and maps we make for our RP. We have quite a number of writers, designers and even developers among us who regularly blow us away with the quality of their creations.

After this internal freshening-up, we restarted our external outreach by making ourselves more visible to the wider NS audience. A public embassy was opened for NS GP. Helpful answers on Reddit NS attracted some lovely people. We opened Linka regional booth during the NationState World Fair 6 and participated in an interregional football tournament hosted by The League of Conservative Nations where our 'Valiant Vertibirds' went down fighting. When there's a NS game going on (e.g. zombies or nukes) we also join in on the fun and it can become quite competitive. Our world became a much bigger, well-rounded place.

4.5 Reformation (April 2019 to present)
In 2019 a belated April Fools' Day joke by one person nudged us towards an unscheduled move from Europa to Eurth. Someone drank too much of the Kool-Aid and decided it'd be a fun idea to go and change the locks on all the doors. What a way to go... Naturally, because it was still April and cold outside, we had to look elsewhere for shelter. Everyone helped out carrying boxes to our new place at Eurth.

Together with the new living space, we also introduced the concept of an RP Academy, together with volunteer mentors to guide newcomers. This serves two roles: guiding new players around the vast lore and particular rules, while also creating a threshold for low-effort ghosts. The community began holding regular events, story polls and welcomed many visitors. Recruitment telegram were restarted by Tagmatium which had a positive effect.

I heard about the Geese and the Travelling Region group's visit to here a while back, so when my random number generator picked the world census page with here on it, I thought that it would be fun to give it a go.

I've heard about the old system of RMB posts that meant that only 10 would ever show at once, and I've also heard that this is why double-posting is generally frowned upon in NS. I haven't seen that many regions that still have the legacy of that, but I've only been travelling for about 2 or 3 months so far, so I'll probably see some more in the future.

I don't quite understand why the move from Europa happened, it just sounds like someone went a bit rouge?

Thanks for the extra info.

And in my spare time: On NS I spend time in regional politics, but outside of NS I do quite a bit of sailing (hence the nation name), I watch educational youtube videos (Tom Scott, Wendover Productions, Real Life Lore etc) along with a few others. During the UK lockdown I've been building a huge lego set, we're not talking the sort of thing children get at Christmas, no, this has well over 1000 pieces. I'm also a motorsport fan and have an interest in railways. Sometimes I think that I spend too much time not doing anything, but then I realize how many people spend all their time on games consoles. Games consoles are absolutely fine, you just shouldn't be on them 24/7.

That Lego sounds a lot bigger than the three TIE fighters I've got :P

🎫 Today I spent some time writing postcards. There are a couple of people in my life who seem to have withdrawn into their shell since Covid-19 started knocking on doors. A small card might help them get through this challenging period.

@Sail nation travellers -- Lucky for us that your RNG landed on the number for Eurth. :)

One way to look at it is: the RMB of Eurth goes back to April 2019 and for Europa the earliest archived messages dates from February 2011. Compare that to our off-site forums where the first message was posted in May 2004. That's a gap of almost 7 yeasr. Quite big if you ask me. http://www.europans.com/index.php?showtopic=1

Well I can only give my own take on things. The caretaker of Europa's founder account and myself had a disagreement about the future of the region. It came to a point where demands were made. And when those demands weren't met, everyone was kick-banned. It took 12-24 hours to overcome this setback. And now we're here. In our Hitchhiker's Guide this is called the "Reformation".

All of those names are familiar to me since I'm a subscriber as well. If you like Wendover, perhaps Real Engineering is something for you as well. Some other channels I enjoy as well are Kings and Generals, Invicta and CaspianReport. And the alternate histories by Monsieur Z andWhatifalthist. On our forums we also have a video library dedicated to RP and worldbuilding: http://www.europans.com/videos/

In the evening when I'm reviewing my day I sometimes ask myself the same question. Even on the busiest workdays I still spend 3 à 4 hours reading. Books or article or news. That doesn't always have to be productive. It's perfectly alright to do something just for fun.

@Tagmatium -- Ooh I didn't know you were into Bricks.

@All -- The latest story poll is up. We follow 🧙 Waldo the Wayward Wizard as he escaped from Tagmatium to Machina Haruspex. Act 15 deals with the mysterious men in black armour. Voting is open for another 8 days. page=poll/p=162179

Orioni 2 Not so much, just had Christmas money and the new films had come out. It was over three years, one each year. I watched a film and made them. It was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

Well, it is time for me to wonder on further into the world of NS. I've had a nice time conversing with residents and learning about the region's history, but today I shall sail off to another region. Thank you for this enjoyable visit, and I wish the best for this region and it's community!
Goodbye!!
