Yeah but what stroke me up was Lee Kuan Yew's statement about the Marcoses. He said that there was no reason the Philippines would be the most successful economy in Southeast Asia. He pointed out that by the time when he met Mr. Marcos in 1950's - 1960's, the Philippines was the most developed country anywhere in the region. The United States was generous to rehabilitate the country after the war. We had all it takes, we have passionate people, high quality professionals that are far better than their own He said. It was just that something was missing, we are a nation of forgiving people, that even those families that pillaged the country 20 years ago would still be accepted today as high level politicians. Marcoses hold positions in the Senate. Sad but true, WE NEED AN OVERHAUL!

I think corruption is still a problem, although I don't know if that's improved since 25 years ago, or got worse.

We improved economically and a lot really. What remains are only corruption and poverty but these are among the ones with the biggest effect to us that's why they seem the same as before.

Heh, I remember a family friend who immigrated here from Hong Kong, when he first arrived here, he was awed by the wonders of the Philippines. We had television and they didn't... :P

Gibo and I actually came from the same alma matter in highschool. He's smart which is probably what scares me. >_> As we well know smarter people in politics here mostly means that it's harder to catch them when they are corrupt.

There's nothing really wrong about the Constitution, it just needs some amendments and also, we need an overhaul in our political system. Turn the Philippines into a Federal Republic just like the United States. This will give the power of growth to the LGU's and we will see growth come from the LOCAL level. In a federated system, provinces are given more privilege to their own profits and are free to use them to fund their own local projects. In comparison to the current centralized system, funds from these places go directly to MANILA. That's why I call it imperial manila. If only there is way to stop manila from relying on the rest of the Philippines and let the provinces develop on their own, we will be booming.
Look at Malaysia, where are they now? About to migrate from middle-income to high-income status and their local governments are really active in implementing infrastructure projects. I guess that's the only way to make us see an economic miracle happen to the country.
There is a danger to the idea. Decentralization might lead to independent movements.
Indonesia and the Philippines are in a different category from the US or Malaysia because of the geography-- our islands lack common borders so there is a need to centralize power.
Well the cultural diversity but there is a binding power that prevents the U.S states from seceding from the Union. That could be done precisely in the Philippines.
I Agree with you ^^ changing the political system might change the whole country not only politics but also the economy. If that will happen, I bet, other cities and provinces in the Philippines will develop at it's fullest. :)
^ As they say, if there is competition, there is fast development. Imagine a country where there is a somewhat competition between provinces. They will be capable to utilize the full extent of their resources like more income from profits, they can develop more and more infrastructure on the smaller-scope. Let's say Cebu builds a stadium or a megadome an then Davao creates a megaport and Mindanao gets and intra-regional rail system. Imagine if Visayan provinces join together to spend in infrastructure to interconnect the islands. There will be a big boom in the economy. Investors will flood in and the country will leap-frog from middle-income to high-income status. An overhaul will unleash the full economic potential of the Philippines as a sleeping dragon and a tiger economy in the making.
