A Small Rock Off Maowi wrote:Yeah, it's started as usual here in September with everyone full-on back in the building. That's interesting that you start in mid-June ... is it something to do with the weather? I know that for example in Italy they restart school a few weeks into September because any earlier it's way too hot to be productive.

Yes. You're correct. Monsoons generallly start mid-June, every year; here in IND. Quite an amazing climate, to start the new academic year. Or, as Rivierenland so correctly put it, the New Year. :-)

So where does the term Indian Summer come from? Growing up in New England, we would use that term to describe warm and muggy Septembers.

It looks to me, as per usual, we are just making up stuff, mixing the New World with India. Sigh, why did we have to have a dummy like Columbus name everything....

Noxious Air has drifted unsettlingly onto the map, affecting most of lower Italy. It has been declared an "Airborne Toxic Event," with residents urged to stay indoors and shut tight all windows and other apertures. If you must go out in it, it is recommended that you fill a mask with nice-smelling flowers and spices in order to prevent miasmatic taint.

Wow, that was intense. They really produced something unique. Also, two-thirds of them need a haircut, dang hippies...

What was a Hans Zimmer concert like? Must be an experience. I've seen a little classical music live, but never anything as intense as that.

Really interesting vocals. A bit more electronic than my liking, usually, but she creates quite a mood with it. Wasn't aware of this artist.

It was good. However they mostly played the more popular stuff like ‘Time’ and some stuff from Gladiator. However if they’d played Roll Tide, Supermarine or this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkCCEIDdXzo then it would have been even better. Really want to see 2 cellos live one day, they look awesome on stage.

I'm gonna guess it's for the start of the school year, I don't know where Riv's from but here in the UK I've just had my first day back. It was nice to be back in school physically, but also ... lessons 😭

The start of the lessons is not something I'd celebrate

Alan Walker is a British-Norwegian DJ who have become the reigning king of the EDM scene. The first piece that I linked was a collaboration with Hans Zimmer of which there have been many.

I'm a Upstate New Yorker and we use that term for a period of like at least 3 or 4 days in october or november with temperatures at least like 70F

Although i have no clue why it's called that.

I dunno man. IND summers are boiling hot (at most 42 °C, the highest temp ever recorded- 2019) & definitely not muggy.
Maybe its something to do with the locals. To my knowledge they're also known as Indians? Right?

The only reason we haven't formed our own state is we need NYC's money!

Mauryavarsha wrote:Ah, New York. The city of dreams! 😍

You would have no reason to know this, but "upstate" refers, here, to basically any part of New York state that isn't the city.

That made me laugh. I grew up in upstate New York, and it's funny how quickly you get into the habit of saying you're from upstate New York, just to avoid the inevitable confusion that would follow without it. It becomes a sort of title you are forced to repeat every time you refer to your home.

Glabo wrote:Ya like jazz?

Sometimes. I went through a phase with it, but I rarely listen anymore. Mostly Miles Davis, when I did. Now, I'll mostly pull it up for background music.

What sort of stuff do you like?

I once lived next to a bar that, once a week, had a free jazz night upstairs. Extremely talented musicians, producing almost unlistenable music. Just the most extreme improvisational, lack-of-melody music you can imagine, this side of John Zorn or someone like that. But quite interesting.

OwO another upstater
I lived in Buffalo until I was 8 which is basically just that weird mashup of Canada and the US, then moved to Rochester (but kept my Buffalo accent, and that just means we say "The 90" or "the 270" (etc) instead of literally what everyone else does in the country). Now I'm a proud eater of Garbage Plates and have 50 family members who used to work for Kodak XD. I've more pride in my city (eh, suburbia, but who cares) than the country lol.

Ah yes, I know the area, though not well. Right on the lake, and indeed extremely close to Canada.

I grew up north of Albany, near Saratoga. Much of my family is from Lake Placid, which is likewise very near Canada, just further northward. Though we moved to Philadelphia around when I was 12.

By the way, Densaner is a New York Giants fan. Though being a Scotsman, he's more knowledgeable about them than myself....of course, I'm an Eagles fan now :P

I feel your pain. I live in Texas. August is the worst month in Texas. We’d be lucky to have a day below 100 F (38 C). Fortunately it’s September and it’s getting cooler, but none of us have recovered from that August Texas heat, yet.
