Mussolini pondered what he could do over this interesting situation. Instead of holding the towns of Sardinia, Mussolini opted to instead order a retreat to the cities of Macomer, Oezerri, and Nurro.

He ordered a fighting retreat, where the retreating Italians would attempt to kill as many French troops as possible. The retreat to Macomer was bloody for the french, and the french army lost 16,000.

On the retreat to Oezerri, the Italian army decided to make a stand and fight before they retreated back to Oezerri near the quaint town of Ploaghe.

Battle of Ploaghe:
30,000 Italian troops first feinted a retreat after a failed purposely poorly coordinated assault on french lines. Then, at their officers orders the Italian troops turned and fired at the French. French casualties from the battle were 9000.

After the battle of Ploaghe the Italians continued their retreat in good order back to Oezerri.

All in all, while Mussolini admitted that Sardinia would be taken, he swore that he would make the Italian lands of sardinia drench in french blood and dabble in Italian blood once the island was in imperialist french hands.
