you could have just said that they have extra large batteries to store light, instead of them being able to harness energy from the moon and sun even when there are clouds. It's just a little more believeable

By the time they had returned, the beast was asleep under the boiling, hot waves of the tainted sea, allowing them easy access to its domain. The smell of iron filling the crewmen's noses, and the heat from the ocean creating a hell of black, hot sand, and volcanic rock. Just as the base had finished, the beast awakens. Rising slowly from its watery den in a cloak of steam and lava. Magma pours from holes in its neck and tail like sweat, and fire bursts from its maw. It fortunately has not laid eyes on the base, it is too far inland for it to detect without purposefully scaling the islands.
