October 1910. Deep in the forests outside Atlanta, Georgia.
The dark forest is contrasted by a burning flame. That flame is the flame of the burning cross in the middle of the forest. But a flame that cannot be seen is the one hidden deep inside the members of the Klan, who had resided in the forests outside the city since the years following the War of Northern Aggression. But burning crosses at night wasn't their only pastime... next to the cross, they had rows upon rows of men, both black and white, who opposed the return of white supremacy in the South. Their time would come...

Early in the morning, October 17, 1910.
"What in the world..." Local detective, Franklin O'Rourke, was deep in the woods with the rest of the local Atlanta Police Department. They'd gotten a tip from a local who had been hunting in the area. It sounded gruesome enough on it's own, but it was even more gruesome in person. When Franklin arrived at the scene, he nearly threw up his breakfast from the diner down the road. He found bodies, black and white, hung from trees with their bodies mutilated. It was horrifying. Franklin recognized most of the white victims as prominent politicians in the area who spoke out for the mixing of the races. An officer investigating the scene also found evidence of a large piece of wood burning in the area. Franklin knew there was only one group who could've perpetrated such an act...

November 24, 1910. Richmond, Virginia.
"And that is why we must continue to keep the races separate! Whites and blacks (I'm going to prevent using the more... "period accurate" term, but if you guys are okay with me using it, i'll begin using it instead.) simply cannot live together. We must segregate them into separate restaurants, separate schools, separate cities, even separate restrooms! And if they cannot bring themselves to accept this new reality, then we must separate them more forcefully!" The Virginia Senate erupted in applause to Henry Lee's fiery speech. A third of the room was in more applause than usual. They were members of the new political party that Henry Lee was a part of. The White League of the South, supported by organizations such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of Confederate Veterans. They had managed to control Virginia, now they shall control the entirety of the South...

December 15, 1910. White House, Washington D.C.
Vice President James S. Sherman speaks with President Taft in his White House office. "Mr. President, i am deeply concerned by the growing popularity of the White League in the South. They have already gained a majority in the Virginia Senate and they are seeping into other state senates across the South. We must do something." Taft looked up at the Vice President. "And what would you have me do Sherman? Forcefully put them down like Grant did in 1865 and repeat that same process all over again? I must simply let them be, and hope that it does not become stronger."

In the weeks after, the White League would gain a majority in the state governments of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Jim Crow laws become even harsher, forcing black citizens in the South to flee to New England and the West. Harlem, a district in New York City, becomes known as a haven for African American citizens. Californian cities such as San Francisco also become flooded with black refugees from the South. The tension pushes both California and New England towards starting their own movements.

December 25, 1910. Christmas Day. Harlem, New York City, New York.
Malcolm Palmer, a black man from Alabama, was now living in Harlem. It was nothing like he had ever seen. In Alabama, he was near constantly harassed by white citizens, especially since the White League and the Klan began gaining power in the South. But now he could live freely. The white citizens of New York were welcoming to him and his family, and he quickly established himself as a resident of the area. As he was walking to a local store as part of his Christmas celebrations, he overheard a sermon from a street preacher.

"Hear me, men of Harlem, for i bring news from the lands of the South! The White League have gained a majority in most of the South, and they are lynching and brutalizing our brothers and sisters for acts that we have never, and will never, partake in! They have been forsaken by the Lord, and they will be sent into the arms of the Devil, where they shall be damned for eternity for their sins against mankind! But we will not wait any longer for these demons to remove themselves from our world! We must go forth, and remove the stain that is the White League from the land the Lord has bestown unto us! Christ demands it, and we shall answer! We shall forge our own destiny, free from the White League, free from the Klan, and free from anyone but ourselves!"

That day, Malcom Palmer witnessed the founding principles of the Free Nation of New England.
