Or, we can make it the discussion question here!
Discuss: Time zones and daylight savings! What are your guys' opinions about these topics?
I think that time zones should be abolished entirely, leaving a worldwide time zone. The already arbitrariness of time zones is, to me, pointless. They barely reflect how the sun rises and sets. Besides, with the advent of artificial lighting and people willing to work at different, more "odd" hours, the need to have an exact time zone for each place is, to me, nonexistent. Now, I'm certainly not saying that people should be made to have to get up when it's still dark out just because the sun is shining on the other side of the world. Not at all. But to do away with complicated, arbitrary, and confusing time zones would be beneficial to worldwide economies and people as well.
okay i had to read that like 12 times. i agree that timezones are stupid and complicated but i feel like a worldwide timezone sounds confusing. every area will need to sleep, work, etc. at different times so a "normal" schedule would be different based on where someone lives rather than now, where if you travel to a different time zone, your schedule doesn't need to change, aside from the fact that you are "skipping" forward a few hours or "going back" a few hours. i think that time in general is just too complicated of a topic for my tiny goblin brain.
I've talked about this on discord, but I'll say it again for the people here.
Timezones are the only good system of organising time globally but a lot of places implement them poorly (western europe, the pacific, china). Preferably these should be fixed to align better with proper geographic timezones.
Daylight savings is confusing and unneeded.
Timezone abolition is a very bad idea: it would simplify a small number of minor things that can be easily solved without abolishing timezones, while partially disconnecting time from the sun. It would make travelling more confusing and difficult, deprive people of a very important part of social organisation, and most importantly would make the modern day-hour system of time lose a lot of it's utility and purpose, among other things. Not to mention the fact that deciding on what that universal timezone would be (especially if UTC was ruled out) difficult and could easily anger a lot of people.
