On 'History Hit' youtube channel, people were asked who was the first King of England. After some discussion, a historian revealed that the first proper King of 'most' England was Aethelstan. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle was probably started around 800 or so and most material about the earliest centuries was largely based on speculations, good guesses or just fiction, however, some earlier rulers appeared on coins and at least they got their names right.

But since all written material was generally confusing, it was just easier to start counting from William the Conqueror.
