Eurovision 2023: Steadfast in Snowby

Eurovision season has arrived, and with it comes those familiar feelings of excitement, national pride, and camaraderie with music fans from across the region. Going into Nardin's third ever Eurovision appearance, this excitement is more pronounced than in either of it's previous stints in the yearly contest given the surprise finish in third place at last year's Grand Finale held in Bjørgvin, The New Nordic Union. Hopes and expectations have been high throughout the Federal Kingdom in the buildup to the 2023 contest with many wondering whether this time they can finally bring home the event's highest honors.

Of course, before even hoping to win big on the region's biggest stage, the nation's representative first had to be chosen. Held in January this year, singers and groups of all kinds gathered in Venilik for the annual Narthic Dreams song contest to compete for the honor of representing Nardin at Snowby, St Scarlett, location of Eurovision 2023, the theme of the year being "Difference." From the multitude of wonderful and unique entries presented two in particular stood out. First was "Roving With Purpose" performed by The Taiga Rangers, the eco hard rock band who took the nation to last year's Grand Finale with their hit single "Subarctic Flame." While the Taiga Rangers had the most jury points this season and seemed set to make a second straight Eurovision appearance, the popular vote was overwhelmingly in favor of a newcomer group on the scene, Aurora Connection, performing "With Steadfast Spirit."

Aurora Connection is a alternative pop rock band that was formed in downtown Venilik in late 2021, a unique feature of the group being the wildly diverse backgrounds of its members, such as guitarist Jannik Frennik who hails from the disputed province of Jilitar and Uri Estevan, born to immigrant parents from the Republic of Andrési. Headlining the group is lead vocalist Yulia Kareliv, an openly lesbian woman and campaigner for LGBT rights in the Federal Kingdom. "With Steadfast Spirit" then takes its inspiration from the lives and experiences of its members, all of whom have come from minority or oppressed backgrounds. According to a recent interview with Kareliv, "With Steadfast Spirit" is "an anthem of hope for all those who find themselves confronted by hardship and discrimination both here in Nardin and the world over. It stands fast in the face of naysayers and those who would do us harm, as if to say 'Here I am! I'm not going anywhere!'" Beginning with a slew of minor chords and lyrics that disclose what the hurt of rejection does to the soul, instruments and voices alike crescendo into a triumphant climax as the band's signature aurora light show flares behind them. As the song concludes the final stanzas point towards a hopeful tomorrow, finishing with "This is for all to see and know, No matter the cost we shall always show, With Steadfast Spirit our dreams become reality."

Having won the popular vote, the contest's judges were compelled to declare Aurora Connection the winners, advancing them to Snowby where they will compete in Group A of the semifinals against many other talented groups from across Europe. We wait with great expectations and baited breath, confident that no matter the outcome Nardin will showcase to all it's form and Steadfast spirit.
