CRACKS IN THE IRON: A WORLDWIDE EVENT
Tarkin Times | Cracks in the IronOne Week After the Funeral
The body remained inside the Cathedral of St. Tannen long after the bells fell silent. As world leaders departed Tannenhof beneath unprecedented security, the marble floor where Herr Valkyrie had fallen was sealed behind heavy oak doors while investigators from the Reich Intelligence Directorate, the Office of the Marshal, and the Chancellery worked uninterrupted through the night. The questions came immediately. The answers did not.
The pistol that killed him belonged to no known maker. The intelligence that condemned him originated from the highest levels of the Reich. The explosive device beneath the ceremonial platform was real. Everything else was not.
The man known as Herr Valkyrie did not exist. His credentials were counterfeit. His military identification belonged to an officer who had died twelve years earlier. The uniform he wore had never been issued. The diplomatic commission authorizing his presence inside the cathedral carried seals so authentic that even experienced protocol officials failed to detect the forgery until hours after his death.
His fingerprints matched no military registry. His handwriting appeared nowhere in the archives of the Reich. Even his face produced no result when compared against domestic intelligence records or the known services of allied governments. It was as though he had been assembled from fragments of other lives.
More troubling still was what investigators found in the sealed envelopes distributed to members of the First Line. No two were identical.
Each contained a carefully composed message addressed personally to its recipient, written in flawless native language, demonstrating intimate knowledge of private conversations, classified negotiations, political ambitions, military planning, and family histories known only to a handful of trusted confidants. Some appeared to encourage reconciliation. Others quietly inflamed suspicion. Several referenced events that had never been made public. One reportedly contained a verbatim quotation from a meeting held entirely behind closed doors months earlier.
Every letter was different. Every letter had been written for exactly one reader.
No government has released its contents.
That silence has become its own story. Within hours, intelligence agencies across Tarkin quietly began comparing reports. No one wished to admit how much the letters appeared to know. No one wished to admit how little they understood about the organization capable of producing them.
How long had they been watching? How deeply had they penetrated governments? Who supplied the information?
And perhaps most unsettling of all...
Who else had received letters?
In Tannenhof, Reich Minister Alec Alexander V addressed the nation and the assembled National Assembly, which has quickly coalesced around his leadership. Alexander has, however, only agreed to lead quietly, with no official role, until the Assembly meets in the traditional manner one month after the funeral of a Chancellor to select a new leader.
He spoke, saying, "The attempt to destroy the First Line failed. Let there be no misunderstanding. The danger did not."
Marshal Dietrich von Omen, a steadfast ally of Alexander who has publicly called upon the Assembly to "take a bold, new approach behind Alexander," has since ordered the largest counterintelligence operation in modern Ruhric history. Border inspections have expanded. Military installations have entered heightened readiness. Internal security services have begun reviewing decades of personnel records. Quiet requests for intelligence cooperation have reportedly reached allies and rivals alike.
No arrests have been announced. No organization has claimed responsibility. No manifesto has appeared. The silence has become deafening.
Across the world, governments now face an uncomfortable possibility. Herr Valkyrie may never have been intended to survive. He may have been only the visible face of something designed never to have one.
The Chancellor is dead. The funeral is over. The world endured.
But somewhere beyond the walls of St. Tannen, someone watched the plan fail. And somewhere, someone has already begun writing the next chapter.
The iron of the world has been forged, and now a crack has appeared.
Welcome, Tarkin.
