Potential Constitutional Reform!

Consul Joannes Norbanus today announced - ten days before national elections - that the Imperial Government has begun considering drafting major constitutional reforms for Caero-Minachia. He said, quote, "I believe it's time we faced the fact that our current apparatus of government, fundamentally, was not designed for our nation in her current form. It was formed in the 1960's for the then-new Republic of Minachia, a country which, although the inheritor of the system of the old Empire, was much smaller and decentralized than our new Empire. To that end, should I be reelected, I will form a committee of top governmental officials and constitutional experts in order to draft changes to our country's constitution. Should I be defeated in the coming days, I also strongly encourage my successor to do the same."

He went on to explain that among the changes thus discussed within the Imperial Council include the introductions of a lower house of legislature, restructuring of the Senate, restructuring of the judiciary, and changes to term lengths. All changes will need to be approved by the Senate and the Court of Censors, as well as by a national referendum. The Emperor has stated that he will support any changes approved by the people, as long as they "do not destroy our nation's storied institutions or prevent efficient governance."

It is unclear how such a sudden announcement will affect the results of the upcoming election, however most polls conducted in the hours following the announcement suggest general public support.
