Two people shot dead by police at MAS station
Two people were shot by the Metropolitan Police at a Mabalete Ambulance Service station after breaking in late Sunday evening.

The incident occurred in the borough (barangay) of Poblacion, where a crew [1] of armed police officers were conducting late night patrols when they noticed two suspects' vehicles entering the ambulance station. The suspects then rushed to a back door, which was when the police officers decided to intervene.

Once the officers entered the station, they were met with gunfire from the male suspect, who was shot and subsequently died on scene. The female suspect approached the officers, offering to help, before drawing a kitchen knife and lunging at one of them. She was also shot and subsequently died on scene. The two officers were not seriously harmed.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated that the identities of the suspects will be withheld as the investigation into the incident remains underway.

Niater Decides | Primary election candidacy filing week begins
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has started the candidacy filing process for the upcoming general primary elections set for Saturday, 17 October.

Candidates are expected to submit their certificate of candidacy, and a valid nomination petition [1]. Candidates are however allowed to instead pay a filing fee, bypassing the secondary requirement. Either one is needed to be listed on a ballot.

The "Super Saturday" primary will also be the very first election in Niater to use the new ballot-on-demand (BOD) technology, which was first proposed as a nationwide replacement to advance ballot printing in 2025. The technology aims to address wasted votes caused by candidates dropping late into primary elections.

As a result, in this election, ballots will now be dynamic and be printed on site at polling centres. The Commission explained that the printers are connected to a secure internal database, which is the source of the ballot templates. They expressed their confidence in the technology and confirmed it will be used for the general election in December.

Filing for candidacy begins today and ends on Saturday, 19 September at 18:00 NST.
