As it passed the last Tuesday of January on this past 26th of January, it was time for Ovskiland's expulsion elections. In these special elections, separate from the presidential elections, members of each district get to have a vote to see if they would like to attempt to boot their representative out of office, citing unsatisfactory performance. Normally, this passes by without much thought, but this year, a representative was successfully removed from office preemptively for the first time since 1684. Representative Mark Tyler-Browne was removed by the rural district of Ponavisk for failing to deliver on campaign promises, as well as spinning himself into a web of lies and dangerous conspiracies in order to defend his turning a blind eye to corporate abuse of workers in exchange for support. It has been decided after counting of ballots that his replacement will be Yvette Warner, a girl who grew up in the urban streets of Ponavisk's main city, Jubarome, unlike Browne, who was raised in the affluent hills of Izovrith. No other candidates were put up for replacement, however, a new precedent may have been set for years to come.

"Welcome to the third day of the Winter Olympia Games! Today I woke up to immense disappointment in finding out that today's competition did not involve rolling down hills in tires. However, I was given a surprise today about what today's competitions were: Curling and Figure Skating. Curling is when a rock flies across the ground and you sweep in front of it. I cannot make this stuff up. Then there is figure skating that I came to find out isn't when you brag about how many figures you earn in your salary. Wouldn't matter anyway because I would lose at both."

So this is something I've been wanting to do for a long time but delayed it due to RP guidelines set out early last year. However, I don't want to hold off on this for an entire year and so I have finally written it.
Our Monster of the Week campaign finished tonight and with it the story it had. Season 1 took place in 1642-43 AD in the kingdom of Kotovania (the DSA Capital). I used the game to also inform us on Kotovani history as the game, IC, is presented like a historical fantasy show. So however the story went also affected what the history of the city-state was. Many elements from the game were incorporated into it, but obviously not all as the writers of the show were using high fantasy.
And so I present History of Kotovania: The Fall of The Kotovani Monarchy and Rise of the Kotovani Republic. It's detailed enough to give a good idea while vague enough to not be exhaustive and too restrictive. I ask for the region's thoughts on this.
Content Warning: plague is a central part of this story (hence why I said I waited a whole year)
The Pemberton Dynasty
In 1461, the Moland Dynasty ended when Cuthbert Moland died without producing an heir and Cuthbert's cousin, Oswyn Pemberton, took the throne. In his coronation, he sought to tie his reign to the Kotovani people and present himself not as the heir to the throne but to the entire nation in an attempt to use nationalist sentiments to gather support among the nobility that were critical of him taking the throne. In this, he became Kotovan I.
The Pemberton Dynasty saw the tradition carry on with every first born son being given the first name of Kotovan. The final king would be Kotovan XIII, of whom was the 11th king of the Dynasty as Kotovan VI and Kotovan XI died before they could ascend to the throne and the 2nd eldest sons took on the name.
Year Leading Up To The Plague of 1641
Starting in 1640, the kingdom began to suffer from greater rainfalls and colder temperatures. This resulted in crop failures the following autumn and would continue for years to come. Food decreased by a significant margin for the kingdom, leading to famine. This was exacerbated by policy that had been in place for years by Kotovan XII that prioritized greater flows of crops to urban areas to support the growing urban community and merchant guilds to the expense of rural communities that were left with less crops as result.
In the years leading up to 1641, villages and tribes in the Muntsuny Highlands beyond the border of Kotovania were seized by a roaming band of mercenaries referred to as the "Night Horde" by Kotovani scholars at the time. They were named for how they would attack at night in surprise raids while covering themselves in black paint and clothing. Led by a largely mysterious figure known as "Cedulus", the Night Hordes were preparing to start raids on Kotovania
The Plague of 1641
In the year preceding the death of Kotovan XII, the first recording cases of plague were reported in the kingdom. Historians assign the most likely source of the plague was from traders who poached Idalu-Shirumi from Iskar and brought them to Kotovania in 1640. Idalu-Shirumi became an invasive species that spread throughout the countryside and contained a bubonic plague that humans had not be previously exposed to before. Kotovan XII had little response to the plague until a month before his death when he began attempting to combat it.
In the late winter of 1642, Kotovan XII died after falling ill to an unrelated illness, leaving the throne to his son Kotovan XIII. Kotovan XIII had a stronger response to the plague than his father and began immediately to address it. One of his policies included the creation of syndic health boards that were assigned with fighting the plague by any means necessary. The syndic health boards were granted large amounts of power legislatively, executively, and judicially, and used their power to put large populations of peoples into quarantines.
Kotovan XIII also encouraged the creation of cordon sanitaires to patrol borders of towns and provinces to try and prevent the plague from spreading further. While the syndic health boards were large contained to the urban centers, they would join the cordon sanitairies in what was effectively persecuting anyone they believed may be spreading plague, largely poorer populations. Many would assign blame of the plague to witches and many women faced persecution for supposed witchcraft. Some accusations even included the kidnapping of children for their blood. The church was also a major victim to the plague as many opened their doors to the sick and would treat the ill. The church would also join in these attacks, sometimes launching raids on spinster villages in belief that witchcraft was involved.
The Night Horde Battles
In the spring following the ascension of Kotovan XIII, the Night Hordes came across the borders of the kingdom and begun their raids of the countryside. Most of the victims of these raids were farms and villages, sometimes Jeb!ist churches. Kotovan XIII responded to these raids by sending out the military who would both face the Night Hordes as well as support the cordon sanitairies patrolling province borders.
While the Grand Army of Kotovania were largely successful in the south, many battles occurred in the north. Kotovani general Abraham Vaerenbergh led the northern front against the northern Night Hordes led by Cedulus. During this, the Nigh Hordes laid siege to the city of Layvindall that was already facing high numbers of death from the Plague and captured the city. It would be held for a month before Vaerenbergh's forces managed to recapture it.
The Plague Riots of 1643
With the harsh punishments, strict policies, and lessening food, many civilians began to protest the king and the government. Syndic health boards requested assistance from the Grand Army once they began to turn to riots, but the military did not come to their support. Public opinion had been turning against the monarchy for years now with the growing influence of democratic ideas from other nations and rising influence of government critical intelligentsia speakers, many of whom were in close contact with Abraham Vaerenbergh.
After reclaiming Layvindall and seeing how little was done by the monarchy to properly contain the disease, Vaerenbergh and other military officials turned against the king. This culminated in the Plague Riot of 1643 where a mix of civilians and military arrived on the island of Westmarcieg and stormed the Kotovan Castle where Kotovan XIII was seized and executed by hanging.
Vaerenbergh Regime and Establishment of the Kotovani Republic
Following the deposing of the king, the military seized control of the government. Abraham Vaerenbergh, the leading general of the military forces, became the leader of the nation. He instituted martial law, curfews, and other policies aimed at reducing the spread of plague. Along with this, provincial leaders were removed and replaced with military officials loyal to Vaerenbergh. This helped solidify the military's hold on the country.
Following his claim to power, Vaerenbergh called a meeting with many of the nation's intelligentsia who were critical of the monarchy in order to transition the nation out of monarchy and into a republic. In 1643, he announced that the monarchy was abolished and that the Kotovani Republic had be established with him as President. However, despite this move that implied a transition towards liberalism, the transition would not officially occur for many more years to come as he did not allow for elections for many years. The military dictatorship lasted from 1643 to 1649 during which Vaerenbergh's circle worked on drafting the concept for what the republic would be. During this time, plague infections would reduce as would plague deaths. Along with this, the cold waves and excessive rain would diminish and crop harvest were able to return to higher outputs.
During the time of the Vaerenbergh Regime, the nobility and feudal system were abolished, with nobles who showed support to Vaerenbergh being granted land and power in the new government. In 1648, in a move towards liberalization, the government established a parliament and a Prime Minister was appointed, but both were still largely under the control of Vaerenbergh. In 1649, another coup would occur by parliamentary forces that arrested Vaerenbergh and other government officials that worked closely with him, convicting them of treason and being sentenced to death in the same year. Following was a rework by the parliament to severely reduce the power of the presidency and fully transition the nation into a parliamentary republic.

"Welcome to the fourth and final day of the Winter Olympia Games! Unbeknownst to me, we do, in fact, have some sports that make sense. There is the one wild one we have, that being Snowboarding, which is skiing but with one big stick instead of two smaller ones. Sounds like a weak person's version to me. But then we get to the truly astounding sports! There is Wrestling where two barely clothed peoples rub and constrain each other until one in stuck on the ground, all while on top of a frozen river! This is the sport of the gods right here! Then comes Ice Dodging, where competing ships intentionally sail through icy waters, trying not to hit the ice. This isn't even a sport but art! Truly astounding! If only we could have had sports that made sense during this competition, but alas the world is too odd for us."

The biggest riot ever seen in our city shook our streets last night. Volunteer groups in favor of opening the border with Sörslúth have once again clashed with local police in an attempt to break through and open makeshift refugee camps to deal with the sudden increase in arrivals from Sörslúth. The volunteers rated the construction conditions of the so-called "Human Disposal Centers" as inadequate. The breaking down of the door of camp number two allowed many Sörslàidir to escape and join the protests of the volunteers. The windows of many shops were smashed and many cars were damaged. During the night the obligation was issued for citizens to stay at home for the next two days. However, the situation was calmed at around five in the morning, when the arrested refugees had to return to the refugee camp, and many of the volunteers were incarcerated. But we hear the statements of one of the volunteers who did not participate in the revolt:
"I do not share the action of my companions and that is why I am here now. Ereterma has always meant" solidarity "for me. We are a city of passage and consequently of welcome. Hospitality is not guaranteed by violence . I just wish those Dùths and those Chasachs could finally have the longed-for peace. This should be the right place. I'm sorry that reality betrays my expectations. "

The room was gray, as were the plastic chairs on which the two children sat: two frail boys, who could not have been more than nine years old. They were completely different from each other. The one on the right had a mocha complexion and very dark long hair, woven into traditional hair that I had never seen. Dark circles dug into his small face and long, uncared-for nails hid layers of grains of sand. On the left, the youngest had white, almost white skin and short blond hair. On the little upturned nose was a crown of freckles and the chapped lips were very swollen. I watched them carefully, not meeting their gaze at first. Without knowing it, I was afraid. In the background, a TV left on reported the events of the previous night and I couldn't believe I had slept so soundly and for so long, while the world outside changed. The dark-haired boy was wrapped in a sand-colored cloak, under which he seemed to be wearing a brown sack of yutah. The other was wearing a white T-shirt and sandals so worn they seemed to have no soles. When I looked up and met the blond's gaze, he let out a basic word: "Thanks". The faint voice, a morning breeze. I sat in front of them, ashamed of the shame that all adults feel in front of infants. I opened my notebook and asked them the first question.
"What's your name?"
"Dòchas" answered the boy on my right.
"Teachd" replied the little boy on my left.

We're close to going under 200 nations, however the good news is that in comparison to other regions our percentage of active people is quite high.
