Although language is universal to all Avatians, there is no one language to rule them all. Avatians speak numerous languages, most of which can be divided into related families. In this article, I will go through the languages of Enadia and Terra Dexter, categorised by their families.
Trans-Enadian languages
The Trans-Enadian language family (so named because it extends across and transcends the Enadian continent) originate from northeastern Hunetia, right on the boundary between the forests and the steppes. It can be divided into a western and an eastern branch, leading to Enadian and Xoli respectively. I will firstly look at the western branch and its earliest attested language, Edemaian.
Edemaian
Edemaian refers to a group of dialects in what is now the Sleskuh Autonomous Region in Hunetia. It is the furthest north area of the Ancient Near East, in the Vales of Miri under the shadow of the Sedsun mountains. The dialect spoken in the city of Woghamera is the most well-known. It had an unusual 4-vowel system (using /a/, /e/, /o/ and /ɨ~ʉ/), evidentiality, verb agreement, and often irregular noun forms caused by a definite article prefix.
In each of their 7 kingdoms, the Edemaian kings had a tendency to exile entire groups of people whose line of thinking did not agree with them. They would often be deported to the edges of the mountains, but this had the side-effect of these people forming a subculture, the Ro, on the outskirts of society that would best be described as anti-establishment. During the Moha-Varni wars, the Ro conquered the Edemaian kingdom of Govi and began raiding the other kingdoms. Edemaia lost its protection from Varna and was ravaged by the Moha Yevi. The only remaining kingdom, Woghamera, was forced to become a vassal of the Moha Yevi empire, and the Yet'ha would constantly raid the other areas. The Ro would migrate into the mountains, and would forget their Edemaian roots, with them only being remembered in distorted stories. Two things that they did remember, however, were government and economy. They still did not like the idea of a monarch, so they elected 10 elders to rule them instead. Gold was abundant in the Sedsun mountains, and skilled smiths could fashion it into coins. Now they had moved to the other side of the mountains, and started civilisation all over again.
Enadii
It is important to note that Ro, the Edemaian word for "no", was only a nickname as the Ro did not name themselves. Their descendants would come to be known as Endna, or traders, rendered into Classical Enadian as Enadii.
Enadii originated from the lower-class dialects of the Edemaian kingdoms, taking most of its vocabulary and grammar from the Govan dialect. Enadii had the usual 5-vowel system of /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/ and /u/ which it shared with most Edemaian dialects (the exception being Wogameran). Some sounds it did not share with Edemaian were aspirates, the lateral sounds /ɬ/, /ɮ/, /tɬ/ and /dɮ/, and voiceless nasals.
Its grammar is noticeably more complicated than Edemaian's. It included much more (highly irregular) verb declensions, distinguished gender, and often combined the subject and verb into one word. By the peak of the Enadii Trading Civilisation it had developed a fully-fledged case system. It did, however, simplify some aspects of Edemaian grammar. It dropped the plural suffix and evidentiality system.
