When you have a high number in environmental beauty and/or eco-friendliness (I'm not sure if it requires both), it translates as having a lot of forests in your nation. Eventually you may get issues that will help lower the number of people lost in the wilderness, but for now, it's just a tradeoff for having a nation with a healthy environment.

That makes sense! Thank you!

Another question for anybody willing to answer: since I'm new, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for getting started? Participating with other Nations? I'm having fun but feel kind of lost so far! Tia!

yeah, that stat is interesting eventually it gets absurdly high, in the nation that I actually answer issues on literally a third of people die lost in the wilderness.

That's wild. At least now I know it's not something I did to cause it!

Welcome to Refugia. This is one of the best regions in NationStates, so don't leave.

I don't plan to! I joined because I like how active and welcoming the various Nations are!

That's good then. Also, if you are a WA member, consider getting on the map.

I am! How can I join the map?

There's a link to the map in the part of the site that shows Refugia's stuff (top of screen). There's instructions to fill out a telegram with information about your nation to put on the map and send it to Sylh Alanor. You'll be on the map in a few days. You might need to refresh your browser in order to see your nation.

Discuss stuff on the Refuge chat, log on as often as possible, get on the map (I already told you how) or vote on WA stuff.

There's kind of a basic getting started guide linked in the region's factbook entry, but I should really make one specifically for us will all of the stuff I've learned you can do in it.

I'll get to work on that as soon as this vote concludes

There's trading cards you can get from answering issues, and a whole in-game market based around them, the issues themselves that let you RP your nation, and a whole host of forums discussing everything from WA resolutions to RP threads, to real life politics.
I know there are a couple people in our region that have a little experience with cards and WA resolutions as well, plus some with experience with raiding, the other big cross regional activity.

Speaking of cards, just a bit ago I completed the only collection of every Ultra-Rare card in season 2: (page=deck/collection=16676)

We're also lucky enough to have Akkana occasionally popping up in Refugia, who was the first person to complete a collection of every season 2 Legendary card (page=deck/collection=17751)

Sylh Alanor wrote:Speaking of nukes, does anyone want to be our point-person to coordinate N-Day this year? I've received an offer from Canopy, one of the largest alliances, to have us join, but I'd like to have someone in or related to Operations be in charge. It should be super easy; last year Refuge had to coordinate things more or less entirely on her own, since it was more or less over for Refugia by the time I got home from work. Being within Canopy would require our person to more or less have a couple discussions with the highly experienced people there and give the rest of us instructions on what would be expected of us.

This would also be a great way to build up experience if you're interested in eventually getting a Councillor position ^-^

Sending out another call for this! Please let us know if you'd be interested!

I recently started wondering if the USSR, China and other nations that have called themselves "communist" are actually communist. I think that they are/were, in fact, dictatorships billed as communist.

If you really think about it, communism is "a people-driven nation where the economy is controlled by the government." USSR, PR China and other communist nations don't really follow the first part of the idea of communism, considering the terrible quality of life in those countries and the people killed by the government.

Thanks for your well-wishes. Stressful as always, but at least I got it done

Until the next time, anyway 👀

USA related: I've recently started to get old clips back from the 2008 and 2012 elections recommended to me on YouTube. It is interesting to look back at them because I wasn't old enough to remember the 2008 presidential election and wasn't knowledgeable or interested in understanding the 2012 presidential election. I've been looking back and marveling at the differences between then and now during those elections when it was first John McCain vs. Barack Obama and then Mitt Romney vs. Barack Obama and I've been quite amazed by the changes in politics since then.

However, you can see in this clip from 2008 McCain defending Obama when two of his supporters who were allowed to be on the microphone spouted bigoted nonsense and it made me think about how now this type of stuff is embraced by certain individuals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIjenjANqAk

Many forms of government are fine ideas on paper but in practice, this tends to happen. It turns out the main drawback of any power plan is.... corruption.

The premise of my nation relies on everyone taking personal responsibility, being honorable, and vying for respect, but in reality, it would break down almost immediately because of exactly this.

Yep, 100% on the mark. Hard-to-run forms of government, such as socialism/communism, are easier to corrupt, which has been seen throughout history. The premise of communism is a corruption-free government, but communist nations have not achieved that, so I would be hard-pressed to actually consider these nations "communist." My nation, Flohovistan, has gone through some questionably ethical changes, including making certain government ideals illegal, but my nation has good civil rights, which is more than you could say for most current nations, and an amazing economy.

hey guys, not sure where to find this info but i remember hearing something about war in this game? A lot of "Condemn" WA Resolutions reference it, but so far nothing I have found even hints at war/subterfuge. Can anyone clarify?
