Soft Jazz? Jazz Fusion? Swing Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, or perhaps Jazz Improv? (Though there are some that like to claim that all Jazz is improv.)

Of course, Jazz Fusion will lead you into Progressive Fusion, that that'll bring you right into Progressive Rock. Just start with Al Di Meola, Stanley Clark and Chic Correa from the band Return to Forever. Al Di Meola is currently on solo tour. (RIP Chic.)

The late Alan Holdsworth was a unique Jazz Rock guitarist. One of my bosses in the early 90's was one of Alan's students, and he played in a local jazz band.

Yes, all musical roads eventually lead to Progressive Rock, as Alan played in the Progressive Rock Supergroup UK. Jazz is awesome. I like 1920's/30's jazz.
