During the late XIX century, many nation's zoos started selling out capuchin monkeys due to considering them 'ugly' and their tendency to brake their jails.
Few zoos actually bought some of the monkeys, but after that, there was no place for the animals to go, as they couldn't be released into nature or else they'd die.

With hundreds of these monkeys on sale and no one buying, one of the great powers forced upon Arepandia to host the apes. The central was forced to scramble and build up a place where to place around 280 monkeys in less than two months, before the first cargo arrived.
Thus, the great monkey zoo was build as fast as they could in the outskirts of the capital, which became the largest zoo in the world, although of just monke.

The Ape's World Zoo

The "Ape's World centre" zoo was the largest complex at the time, consisting of 6 domes with limited interconnectivity for the apes, and hosted a few other ape species like the Spider monkey or the Lion monkey.
The inside was full of trees and vegetation, as the domes were built on top of an already existing forest, and zoo keepers had to be able to navigate and orientate inside it to not get lost.

The Outbrake

Two decades later, the ever increasing population of monkeys exploted, quite literally, as the population surpassed 500 beings, reaching the limit, now with the monkeys sleeping pilled up due to the lack of space.
This in turn caused great stress on them, causing mass rampages and the rages that destroyed the wooden walls of the dome. In the dome 6, the apes climed up a tree and mangaed to escape from the sky opening.

Thus becoming the great monkey outbreak of 1896. The monkes dispersed all through the country, even reaching neighbouring nations.
In the case of the Campesinado autonomus department, the Campesinos started killing the monkeys who reached their land.

Most of the monkeys who escaped to the wild died over time due to the cold climate and constant raining.
The ones that flooded the cities, managed to survive. Still, most of the population died, reaching an estimate of 100 apes in the nation.
Fortunately for them, a few decades later, the monkeys adapted, developing abundant fur, allowing them to survive in the nation.
The inhabitants, the humans, offered help to the monkeys who behaved well, promoting a well-manered culture in the monkeys.

Still, the population only stabilized around 120 individuals since then, and with modern technologies, the population count began to grow by 1947.

Current situation

Now, the forests of Arepandia are full of apes eating fruits and watching their heads our for eagles, their new natural predators, which thanks to them, [color=green}allowed the natural ecosistem to be balanced[/color] and not be hard impacted by the new specie. The eagles are their main predator in Arepandia, but they are source of food for cougars and boa snakes.

Meanwhile in the streets, they roam free on the street poles and trees, in the many green parts of the city.
While they ocationally can steal fruit for markets, over time the citizens have mannered the monkeys to behave well and live in harmony with the citizens.

They know how to avoid busy roads and to not be caught in the act of pooping on the walkway.
Some Arepandians claim to being able to interact with the monkeys, as some understand humans and rarely help people finding lost things or signalling criminals.
Their main collaboration to the city is their ability to predict inminent rain, to which they start shouting and running away for shelter.

Their diet in the city consist in the fruit they can find in the parks, but due to the non-abundance of it, a group of volutary people stablished and mantain points of food for the monkeys, recicling wasted food in good state, and using funds for what would be the old monkey centre.

Now, in the XXI century, the estimated monkey population is around 867 capuchin monkeys in the duchy, with 80% of them living in urban areas, of which, 50% live in Central Arepa.
While in Campesinado, it's a national sport the hunting of these monkeys.

They were declared as the official national animal in 1969, by popular vote in the previous year.

Campesinado considers just and deserved the punishment made by The arcadian empire towards the insolent Brasilstani population.
Their aggression and continued provocations have been paid in measure by the Arcadian god.
