New Zealand was once home to the Pink and White Terraces. They were a series of stepped, geothermal hot pools, similar to Pamukkale in Turkey. Oft described as a natural wonder, these marvels were lost when they were destroyed in a volcanic eruption in 1886. The crater that remained soon filled with water to form a lake. Many people have searched for the remains of the Terraces, some alleging to have found them under the waters, though the credibility of these claims are frequently disputed.
