I think if I was to design an RPG, I'd be heavily leaning on TVTropes as a resource:

I'm not a fan of dice rolling, so the fewer stats the better, I think. I'd have something like:
Boss - a leadership / persuasion type stat
Brain - intelligence / IQ. Spock or a wizard would score highly.
Brawn - raw meathouse-ness
Bright - agility / resourcefulness. Good for a thief / scavenger / ninja
Build - can fix that broken cartwheel / hyperdrive / disable the timebomb
