Question of the Day:
For how long do you usually keep a phone?
Until it stops working. Usually the battery goes after a few years and that's when I choose to replace the whole phone. One time I dropped a phone in a river though while at work. That was an unfortunate waste.
I still have all of the phones I have ever owned. I gave up on a home phone a long time ago, and my first mobile phone stopped working in the late 2000s/early 2010s, but I did not get a replacement until my bank forced me to around 2018, so I got a burner phone. I then saw the writing on the wall of my bank soon requiring me to own not just a phone but a smartphone in order to download an application, and purchased one in 2024.
Until they die. I take reasonably good care of my phone to maximise its longevity and get the kind I anticipate I'll need (which is pretty much just choosing one with a decent bit of storage space). In my life, I've had 3 phones to myself. The first was more so just borrowing my mum's spare iPhone 5 until I eventually got an iPhone 6s for Christmas back in 2015; then that lasted me til about early-to-mid 2021 before an issue with the charging port that was notorious with that phone made it unable to be recharged. That thing had charging problems for over a year, but I managed to make it last that extra leg into 2021. Then I saved for much of that year and got the iPhone 13 when it was released in late 2021, which is the phone I still have today. Given my track record (pretty much 1 phone), this phone should last until next year; however, I suspect it should probably have another 2 years in it, maybe several more if I can get a battery replacement, seeing as the current battery health is about 60%. It works fine except for not being able to hold more than a day's worth of charge, but portable charge banks address that issue. If I can't get a battery replacement or it's unreasonably expensive, I expect I'll probably get a new one around 2028-29 when the battery is finally on its last legs.
Maybe two to four years.
Not too sure though since I got my first phone a few months ago!
It is an S25 which is really good. I learned yesterday that it overheats if you leave it on with
the battery too low. The iphone 18 looks so ugly personally, I don't get the whole craze over foldable phones,
they just look ugly since you can't hold them right or you have extra metal to hold onto when holding it.

As long as it works. My previous phone (replaced in 2023) is now a full-time music player and emergency eBook reader, though the display has started to fail recently. It was a super cheap phone, but the battery is still surprisingly good for a 7 year-old phone and really light (great for long reading sessions, but basically never now that I have a Kobo). I will miss it when it finally dies.
