Freedom at last

After over 100 years of European colonization of the area, diplomats from Great Britain and the Transitional Council of Mnisote have singed off on the independence of the Republic of Mnisote, the first ever free nation in North America. Mnisote has at last achieved its freedom through diplomatic means, and will continue its alignment with the British Empire.

Thus far, the council has elected the first Premier to lead the nation in Beauharnois, Larie Barca, who has granted an official pardon to former Premier Paul de Bougnan and his supporters to bolster national solidarity. With the nation once again united and free, the council, legislature, and judiciary will have much to keep them occupied.

Mnisote shall also begin sending envoys to Europe in hopes of establishing diplomatic relations as equals, and promote peace abroad.

"Wake up, you slobs! It's reveille! Anyone not up in two minutes gets the can!" shouted a camp orderly before hitting a tin bucket with a spoon. Olivier La Fleur had certainly enjoyed less rude awakenings in the past. His mind drifted to one of his many excursions as a bachelor in Quebec City or one of his drunken stupors spent in a local tavern wench's bed. Even one of Olivier's many wine hangovers would have been more pleasant, secure in the knowledge that he could escape, and that things were going to return to normalcy later. But life in the Soleilville camp was inescapable and now reality, not just for Olivier but for the thousand or so other thralls who had been unlucky enough to be captured and sent to the camp.

Begrudgingly climbing out of his bunk, he already missed its meager warmth, as November in Soleilville is far from desirable. The first snow had made itself known to both the thralls and to orderlies by late October, causing all the more need for cooperation in such a hostile climate. The thralls knew better than to keep the camp orderlies waiting, thanks to a bloody example made out of a thrall with an attitude, and soon lined up in their cell to begin the morning's count. "ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. Get on over to the mess hall, toute de suite! To add a sense of urgency, the orderly began beating his wooden club against the tin bucket, removing any doubt. Much like coffee before, it was more than enough to perk any thrall up for the morning.

As the thralls slowly marched over to the mess hall, a cold, dry breeze made its way over to them, causing a shiver down their sore spines. For a moment, Olivier could see the sky, still almost pitch black. short guard towers lit by torches dotted the camp's pointed wooden walls, all still very much awake and ready to shoot if need be. Though Olivier could not see them, they could see him. When the thralls had gotten to the mess hall, their minds were warmed with the prospect of a warm bowl of soup and some bread. One was only given 2 demi-livres of bread each day, so the thralls soon learned how to make it last throughout the day. It was never enough, but it was something.

"carrot soup again, eh? That's the fourth time this week", grumbled a thrall as he walked over to a table with his rations. When it was Olivier's turn to receive his rations, he was disappointed to see his bowl was only a little over half full, and with few carrots, vegetables, or any of the old beef or chicken occasionally brought to the camp provisional office. During the camp's earliest days, Olivier remembered witnessing some of the thralls fight each other over a full bowl of soup, though the punishment of forgoing food for a day was far worse than that broken nose could ever inflict. Each thrall needed this bowl of soup, however meager, else he succumb to famine, and thus disease, then a slow and agonizing death. For a moment, Olivier took comfort in death, though it had a habit of being more trouble than it was worth, at least at Soleilville.

"You know, I heard from a friend that the Lutsen camp's Director let him out on good behavior. Wonder if our Director would ever loosen up and do that", said La Gronge, a tall and gaunt thrall as he was stirring through his soup nonchalantly.

Before looking over his shoulder to check if a trustee or orderly was nearby, he leaned in and whispered to his small squad.

"There's no way in hell Tocqueville would ever do that. He's too much of a hard ass. Remember when he branded Frederick for trying to escape? It took weeks to get the poor bastard's burns disinfected", said De Kalb.

"If the Premier saw that, he would have him fired", stated Frederick, rubbing the scarred brand on his chest with unease.

"Well he's the Permier's brother, and he can't say no to family", said La Gronge with acid in his voice.

"No justice in this godforsaken camp", concluded Frederick. When the thralls finished their soup, Olivier stored the leftover bread in his pocket, as it would make an excellent supplement for lunch later this afternoon. When he was outside, the camp Coordinator, a scarred boar of a man they simply called 'Cicatrice' was doling out the tasks to the squad leaders, now elected by squad members. In Squad 5, they were on lumber duty, while the lucky bastards at squad 4 were on harvesting duty. At least the blood flowing would keep Olivier and his fellow thralls somewhat warmer today than yesterday, as harvesting maple syrup was generally a tedious process.

As Squad 5 was escorted out of the square by the orderlies, Olivier could at last see the morning sun peer through the trees of the dense Northwoods, a pleasant orange-pink this morning too! For just a moment, Olivier gave a small smile across his pale, thinning face as the color enraptured his complexion.

An account of the Royal French Inquisition by M Frédéric Mace:

    Anno Domini 1770, December 12th,
It is by the grace of God and the will of Mon Roi Louis XV to realign France with the grace of God, and in adherence to His Holiness the Pope prohibiting Freemasonry from contaminating Catholics of good moral standing and not allowing any manner of secret society that goes against the will of God. Additionally a concentrated effort to remove pornography and prostitution in our nation is of vital, but secondary import. Using information gathered by the eyes and ears that report to Le Roi the Inquisition was formed to destroy the sinners and enemies of the state. In a now spreading royal decree Freemasonry is to be banned with high ranking members, if found to be leaders of Masonic Orders are to be put to death without trial if proper evidence is gathered, and the Inquisition is to carry out trial and punishment for lower ranking masons. The inquisition has begun to move in accordance to the will of God.

An account of the Royal French Inquisition by M Frédéric Mace Pt 2:

    Anno Domini 1771, January 5th,
We have struck the heart of the unholy intelligentsia and have captured the villain known as Voltaire in his publishing. He is to be put to death quickly and his works to be banned for spreading anti-catholic sentiment and is suspected to have been funded by masons to publish his works. A deeper investigation will follow the villains death to try and find his patrons and bring them into the light to be tried by the Inquisition.

    Anno Domini 1771, February 6th,
Another Villain was captured by the inquisition but we now face ourselves with a compromising diplomatic situation. The villain known as Jean-Jacques Rousseau has been detained, under the anti-royal stance and publishing of “Du contrat social” arguing against the divinity of the rule of Le Roi as well as positing other anti catholic thoughts. However no evidence of his involvement of the Freemasonry and as such exile is to be considered under parole to be sent to Quebec.

    Anno Domini 1771, March 20th,
The Inquisition has received additional manpower and funding directly from Le Roi, seeing his determination to undue the lax nature of his predecessors in regards to cracking down on Freemasonry and other manner of degenerate secret societies. Additionally the scope of the enemies of France has broadened to include those that wish to effectively destroy the influence and Authority of both the Catholic Church and The Royal Family. Writings from such authors as Gabriel Bonnot de Mably are to be considered blasphemous or inciting and will be treated in a similar light as writings from Masons and to be persecuted as such.

Conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, Ratifications Commence - February 9, 1783

In the great city of Philadelphia, from which the to-be-reformed Congress of the Confederation has elected to relocate following the Ordinance of the Federal District, delegates of the Congress did on this day, the Ninth of February in the Year of Our Lord 1783, announce the successful adjournment of the Constitutional Convention. From it forth springs a new foundational code, ordering the restructuring and firm foundation of a new federal government under the Constitution of the United States of America, the Supreme Law of the Republic.

Organized at collaborating levels of authority, the Constitution places the states beneath the superior regulation of the federal government, the organs of which have been designed thusly: centering around the collaboration of the states under a unified central government, Congress will be joined in its governance by sister mechanisms, both executive and judicial. The document sets forth the impending establishment of the Supreme Court, and the creation of the office of President of the United States in accordance with agreements between state delegates. A president is due to be elected by designated electors no later than the Fifth of December in the next year.

It was confirmed, following the arduous process to arrive at this point which produced numerous compromises, that representatives of the State of Delaware would be the first to ratify this Constitution.

Ordinance of 1783, Western Ordinance, Pass in Congress - March 19, 1783

Following the ratification of the Constitution by most southern states, it was announced by the Minister to France, Mr. Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, that Congress had, by majority of a singular vote met by Mr. Henry Allen of New Jersey, passed the Ordinance of 1783. Highly contested, the edict, presumed to be integrated into the Constitution at a nearing date, outlaws the practice of slavery in all new states admitted to the Union forthwith. Supported by the honorable Mr. Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, the code does hereby declare that the sale of slaves beyond the states in which it is currently observed (Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland) will be punishable by impressment into service, imprisonment, or the confiscation of property.

Joining the edict's passage was that of the Western Ordinance, the success of which garnered far more unanimous support. The Western Ordinance does, as of this day, the Nineteenth of March in the Year of Our Lord 1783, order the thorough reorganization of the western territories under the command of the United States of America.

With the consent of the states in the interest of settler expansion into the badlands, the action outlines a designated plan by which, over the coming years, the west will be administrated through no less than three separate federal territories. By providing militia aid to those settling the frontier, it is further hoped that the act will serve as a catalyst for the development of the reforming Continental Army.

1784 Election - George Washington Elected First President of the United States - December 30, 1784

After some weeks of deliberations in Baltimore, the interim seat of Congress, the first ever presidential election in the United States of America has concluded with the election of former Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (a rank since retired in his honor and succeeded by the rank of Senior Officer of the United States Army) George Washington to the office of President of the United States. Having selected as his Vice President the honorable former Minister to Italy, Mr. John Adams, Washington was elected unanimously by 78 electors appointed by the states.

As the construction of the new federal capital in the adopted federal capital progresses, Congress did, after extensive counting, confirm that the role of President, stipulated in its service by the Constitution of the United States of America, would be dutifully served by Washington for a term of four years, after which he would be entitled to seek an additional, renewed term.

Designated as President-elect, Washington and Adams, by order of the Constitution, will be inaugurated as President and Vice President of the United States of America in the spring of next year, no later than the Thirtieth of April in the Year of Our Lord 1785.

Flaming orb sighted in Siberian wilderness, philosophers bewildered - 17:oe Juniya 1790

A group of native frontiersmen who were hunting arctic foxes in the tundra, near the Stony Tunguska river, have reported a sighting of a ball of fire hundreds of arshins across. They described the phenomenon “as if God Almighty had descended upon us from the heavens and warned the world to repent its sins”. The terrifyingly bright orb, appearing in the pre-dawn twilight, could be seen moving in the sky for a minute, after which it disappeared with a deafening blast. While the hunters were the only ones who saw the orb, the residents of two villages south of the river also confirmed having been awoken by an intense light. Initially assuming the sun was coming up, they then noticed the light was coming from the north, not the east.

Russian explorer and diplomat Erik Laxmann was staying at Chemdalsk, Baikalskiy Okrug, some 150 versta from the site of the phenomenon. He personally did not hear the blast, but one militiaman keeping night watch in the town confirmed he heard it faintly. Following the scattered trail of reports, Laxmann travelled north, before finally finding the frontiersmen and documenting their eyewitness accounts. Laxmann also saw a small area of burnt trees and moss. Colleagues at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences could not establish the cause of the phenomenon, so theophany, or divine revelation, proposed by Patriarch Plato II is currently the most widely acknowledged theory among natural philosophers as well.

The Democratic Republic
Regional Update

The Democratic Republic of Valeria would like to let the other regions know about the situation happened.

The month of July started with some difficulties, but after the special elections of July 8th, the new majority managed to establish a stable government. Tranquility has returned, but together with inactivity. On July 30th, the Premier announced a State of Emergency and closed the embassy with the region of Red Wolf Alliance. This action created turmoil in his Concilium: The Department of Foreign Affairs claimed it had not been informed of the situation, the Premier had only ordered the department to check RWA's embassy, which the Minister of Foreign Affairs did, noting any lack of requirements.
After some discussions, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, with its Deputy, decided to resign, but they didn't make it in time for the Premier to fire them.

The August 2023 Senatorial Elections ended. The Federalist Party returned to govern, in coalition with the Independent Caucus. End of the Tax Revolt - September 14, 1791

After four years of rampant mutiny and tumultuous fighting in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont, the United States Army under its Commander-in-Chief President George Washington has restored order to New England. In the spring of 1787, thousands of militiamen took up arms against the federal government in response to the establishment of national taxes desperately needed to pay off the debts of the United States. In Connecticut, an army of 3,000 was brought to heel by the national force in 1788. From then on, the force of the mutineers, known in some circles as the "Evadists," only dwindled further to the point of their final defeat this summer.

Leading a campaign between the states which the calamity rocked, President Washington oversaw the decisive defeats of the disloyal troops at Waterbury, Torrington, Woodstock, and Saint Johnsbury. These decisive campaigns would culminate in the final standoff between federal forces and the rebels at the foot of Mount Mansfield.

Conducting a series of missions in the woods at the base of the mountain, the amassed Army of the Hudson surged upon several located encampments of armed tax-evading mountaineers, and violence soon erupted. Under the command of the a man named Mackintosh "Macky" Morrow, the Evadist holdouts opened fire on federal officers in a botched ambush which soon backfired, as the treasonous troops revealed their location to an army which did verily dwarf them.

Within hours, the rebels of Mount Mansfield were quashed, and the elusive Macky Morrow vanished into thin air, rumored to have fled to the badlands of Canada.

In the wake of the revolt's end, Congress has met in Baltimore to discuss the drafting of wide-sweeping economic reforms, chiefly the formation of a central bank which would assume the duties of paying off American debts.

The Powder Keg

The morning sun had only started to dimly light the grey skies of Paris, the day’s weather inciting an oppressive veil of fog and clouds hanging over the city. The usual noises of the city and its residents seemed muted with the fog and clouds acting like a cloak for the ambient noise of people, animals, and the workings of the fountains, machines, and church bells ringing to bring in the morning. The weather hanging over the city charged the atmosphere with a feeling of contempt, leading to the darkened skies to bring the people out of their houses, into the streets, like a slow rumbling mudslide. Something was different about today though, the people louder, violence more likely to start at a minor slight, a rage boiling under the surface of the city causing a mob to form and begin to move towards the Royal Palace, where King Louis XVI and his wife Queen Wilhelmina of Prussia were beginning to rise, unaware of the incoming mass of people, moved together with the unseen and unknown spark that incensed them.

The Palace Guards being alerted by the din of the crowd went out and alerted their garrisons, as well as the police to attempt to stop the procession from building up into an uncontrollable mob immune to reason and negotiation. Across the city near the Bastille a second mob had formed reaching the streets within sight of the armory. With shouts and a rush forward the police were almost overrun before a marching formation of the Knights Templar arrived to reinforce the Bastille, Chapter Master riding alongside the Archbishop of Paris seeking to quickly tame the violent impulses of the mob and to call to reason rather than the sins of compassion that may lead to mortal sins. Seeming to work and keep the mob at bay the Knights and Priests continued to spill forth taming any mobs they encountered as they rode a path to the royal palace and met with King Louis about the situation developing on the streets of Paris.

When the procession of knights and clergymen had managed to make their way to the gates of the Royal Palace the sky seemed to weep at their arrival, clouds darkening and rain beginning to fall on the ancient city. There King Louis XVI held a long discussion with the Archbishop, Chapter Master, with counsel of his wife, Queen Wilhelmina of Prussia, and a steam of courtiers and noblemen within the assembly of the Royal Palace all clamoring to obtain the ear of the King, some out of compassion, others out of greed, and a few out of malice. With rain beating down on the palace King Louis had come to a decision, an unprecedented decision to convene the Estates-General in a month to address the complaints of the estates and to put this matter to an end.

1792 Election - John Hancock Elected Second President of the United States - December 5, 1792

It has hereby been certified by assembled members of the Congress of the United States of America on this day, the Fifth of December in the Year of Our Lord 1792, that the the honorable Governor of Massachusetts, John Hancock, has been elected to the office of President of the United States of America. Following an extensive season of rivalry between himself, a member of the Federalist Party, and Mr. Thomas Jefferson, the current Secretary of State, the election did conclude with the former's victory.

The electorate still currently appears to be reeling from the reality of the fact that President George Washington himself did decline to seek a third term as President, despite a near unanimous support for his doing so, at least in the halls of Congress. Nevertheless, this decision was soon to put in motion the ascendance of the two preeminent campaigns which clashed to appeal to the nation's eligible voters.

It would be certified further by officials that Mr. Hancock did receive 31,114 votes, approximately 55.6% of the electorate, while Mr. Jefferson received 24,846 votes, the remaining 44.4% of the electorate.

While Hancock has rallied the Federalist faction of government under his wing, he has made a reputation for himself as a tempered member of the party. While most of his colleagues advocate for wide-sweeping federal control of various functions of government, the President-elect himself has called instead for concentrated federal maintenance over matters of business. His two primary aims as President, he has declared, will be the mass expansion of a United States merchant fleet, and the completion of the formation of the Central Bank.

Memoirs of a Brother's War Soldier

I was just a lad at the time. Couldn't have been more than 17... possibly 18... Fresh out of the regimental drilling camp and with a musket that'd never been fired. By the time my number had come up, the war had been goin on for a while. Back then I served with the Brandenburg 8th Regiment of foot, sturdy enough lot, the NCOs were quick to the swagger stick and officers so disconnected from reality as to cost squads of men their lives. The norm for the time you see. Well, into that I march, bright eyed, blue coat spotless, sparkling musket at my shoulder. Our regiment fought at Vienna under Marshal Keith, of all the generals you hear tell of, the only man I wont continence ill of is he. A damned scott by birth, we new blood snickered at the old salts for their devotion to him, and resented a foreigner for leading good honest Prussians into battle. It wasnt until battle was joined by our humble unit that I learned why the veterans so revered him.

I remember, we'd just marched through the night to secure positions on the heights south of the city, attempting to keep the road to Budapest slammed shut while the Russians rode against the Austrians there. We were tired, bone tired. Even the ancient sergeants were panting with exhaustion when our colonel called a halt. But we couldnt rest, soon as our packs were off the quartermaster passed out spades and we were set to digging breastworks to defend our hill. The NCOs were so beat they couldnt even bring themselves to punish men who dropped from exhaustion, just let them lay where they fell in the muck. Worst yet, our food carts had fallen so far behind us in the march, we had nothing to eat and no pay to get something else.

What a miserable experience Thats when Marshal Keith made his appearance. He'd been riding all night and all day for a week or more, ensuring his soldiers were well cared for. When he rode to us, I remember, he was sitting tall in the saddle, eyes undimmed and alert. He looked down to me where I was slumped against the trench wall and proclaimed, "Gods boy, come here and have something to eat, keep your strength up. It wont do for my men to be broken and starving when the bloody Austrians come up that hill there." He had behind him a cart of his own personally acquired apples, and his adjutant was handing them out. Naturally I cast down my eyes at his words, terrified of the lash, but no blow came.

That apple was a wretched thing, overripe and tasteless, course in texture and the best apple I've ever had in my entire life. If I'd known that the next day the trench I had helped dig would change hands three times, Id have enjoyed the apple a little more. After that, I never heard a single bad thing about Ol' Scotty, and never did I tolerate someone else saying it.

SgtMaj. Derese Merkdoff recounting his experiance just prior to the seige of Vienna during the Brother's War.

Memoirs of a Revolutionary War Soldier

Normally I dont talk to youse kinda guys. Goes against my morals. But ya caught me in a good mood so Ill answer ya questions. The thing about combat is, nobody prepares you for it. You drill and drill and drill, but the true metal of a man is shown when the musket balls start flyin. Either you got it or you dont, and it'll surprise ya when you find out if you do or not. I was with the boys defending Fort Revere, one of the more important fortifications in Boston. We knew something big was coming for a while, the limey bastards werent going to sit idle for long after we kicked them out of America, thats when I got the idea to join up with the continental marines. Recruited my ass right out of a bar in Philly, go figger. Well anyway we were helping the navy boys man the guns at the fort when it all went down. The largest fleet of ships Ive ever laid eyes on showed up one day, a forest of masts that approached like a tempest from the east. Not a one of the boys would say it, but we were terrified. Piss scared. Them ships were like floating fortresses, bristling with guns and swarming with men armed to the teeth, and we had the job of keeping them away.

The preliminary bombardment hit us like a storm, guns as big as a man is tall shooting balls the size of grind stones at us... like canvas being rent, I wont forget that sound a day I live. But it wasnt them we had to worry about, they were firing up at the fort from the water level, so while they made an awful racket most of their shot bounced off the fort's glacis and flew wide. No, it was the mortars what did us the roughest. They had a high arc and could lob shell right into the defensive works. Thank the good lord above they didnt have more of those to hit us with, might have ended things differently if they had. This whole time we was sitting by our battlements, ordered to hold fire, watching the guns on the other islands open up on the english as they moved in closer. Thats when a line of them big ol ships came into range, and we really let em have it. See, we'd already pre-sighted our guns at the extreme range they could hit, so as soon as the first limey ship sailed in close enough, we loaded up the heated shot and gave em our what for.

Of the four, three managed to turn and sail back out to sea, once they realized our guns were still very much in the fight. The lead monster, we turned it into a blazing torch by the time it rammed into the harbor obstructions, and when it exploded, it flattened every man at the battlement. If I close my eyes I can still feel the heat... At the time we cheered, sent them bastards straight to hell we did. Its only now, in my old age that I realize just how many lives we ended in that one explosive moment. A damn shame, really, but it was war.

That was only the start of our troubles though, next the English tried a dusk landing. That was where me and the lads came in, we were all armed with rifles, expensive as sin to make but they have these neat little grooves inside them that spin the ball and let you reach out well past where a musket ball would fail you. So we get the order to man the landward side defenses and we hustled over. Boy, I thought that being shot at by great big honkin ships was something, the fight over there was much worse. Muzzle to muzzle, it gets personal you see. You can look a man right in the eyes before you shoot him down, before you club him dead, or stick him with something. We held that fort, but Ill be damned if I can remember much past the howling of pain, musketfire, and the smoke. We lost a lotta boys keeping them Brits back... Guess that was really only the start.

Yekaterina the Great dies of stroke, succeeded by Pavel I Petrovich - 17:oe Noyabrya 1796

News have arrived from the Winter Palace in St Petersburg that Her Imperial Majesty Yekaterina Alekseeyevna has passed away. The 67-year-old empress collapsed yesterday, without warning, after having her usual morning coffee, and fell into a coma. In her final moments, Yekaterina was surrounded by her closest advisors as well as her younger son Aleksey and his wife, Anna. Notably absent was Yekaterina's elder son, Pavel Petrovich, who is currently leading a military detachment against the Buryat insurgency in Siberia. He will soon return to St Petersburg to be coronated as Pavel I.

Yekaterina rose to the throne after her husband's assassination in 1762. She expanded the Russian empire, annexing domains from Poland and the Ottoman empire, as well as conquering Manchuria - although it was lost once more nine years later. Yekaterina's legacy will also live on in the cultural life of Russia, as she was a major patron of arts. She founded the Hermitage museum and sponsored composers and poets, especially encouraging them to produce patriotic songs and operas celebrating the grandeur and finesse of Russia. As his first action on the throne, Emperor Pavel I has awarded his late mother Yekaterina the posthumous epithet "The Great".

Pavel is a distinguished military leader, credited with defeating the Ottoman army in Moldavia in 1782. However, little is known about his views on domestic policy, and how he will turn out as a ruler remains to be seen. Pavel's relationship with his mother was distant ever since his father, Pyotr III the Cruel was assassinated in 1762 when the young prince was only eight years old. Pavel's first wife, Princess Wilhelmina of Hesse-Darmstadt, died in childbirth, and it was his second wife Sophia Dorothea of Württemberg, who bore his first child, Alexander Pavlovich, in 1777. Prince Alexander - Yekaterina's grandson - married Princess Louise of Baden in 1793, but they do not yet have children; he is now 18 and she is 17.

Yekaterina II dies.
Pavel I becomes leader of Russiya.
