The Law Abiding Kingdom of Aetan is a gargantuan, orderly nation, ruled by King Augustus Cassius II with an iron fist, and remarkable for its national health service, anti-smoking policies, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate, cynical, devout population of 36.683 billion Aetanese are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Education, and Welfare. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Eire Le. The average income tax rate is 90.2%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The all-consuming Aetanian economy, worth a remarkable 2,841 trillion diadems a year, is driven almost entirely by government activity. The industrial sector is solely comprised of the Book Publishing industry. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 77,466 diadems, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Recognizing the Aetanian flag qualifies you for citizenship, the sound of office water cooler chatter has been replaced by the whirring of computer cooling fans, children are raised bilingual from an early age, and you need two tenors and a coloratura contralto to sing the national anthem properly. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Aetan's national animal is the lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its national religion is centered on lawkeeper Shindra.

Aetan is ranked 10,296^th in the world and 2^nd in Lodoss for Most Extensive Public Healthcare, scoring 6,872.72 on the Theresa-Nightingale Rating.
