The Empire of Kalldunn is a titanic, cultured nation, ruled by Michael I with an iron fist, and notable for its museums and concert halls, flagrant waste-dumping, and absence of drug laws. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 13.027 billion Kalldunnians are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The relatively small, corrupt, pro-business, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Industry, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Lochinver. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 27.7%.

The frighteningly efficient Kalldunnian economy, worth a remarkable 4,055 trillion Guilders a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Retail industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Uranium Mining. Black market activity is rampant. Average income is an amazing 311,285 Guilders, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 1,252,004 per year while the poor average 51,794, a ratio of 24.2 to 1.

Grocery stores can be audibly identified by the giggling emerging from them, international trade can be a pain to deal with, colonies are told they'll get their sovereignty back when they finish supper, and the invisible hand of the market wipes babies' bottoms. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Kalldunn's national animal is the Northern Raven, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its national religion is Church of Kalldunn.

Kalldunn is ranked 6,352nd in the world and 10th in The Land of Kings and Emperors for Largest Black Market, with 1,229 trillion Standard Monetary Units.
